2 Days from Earth, Zeon front lines
Erinyes, Musai-class
Holding position
Captain Jeanne Schwert floats down the corridor of her Musai-class. Her crew salutes her as she passes, noting the stormy look on her face. She acknowledges them offhand as she continues her journey through the decks of the Erinyes. Finally, she finds the door she is looking for. The door is locked but Schwert overrides it with her senior officer codes.
The door swooshes open for the female captain, allowing the full force of Beethoven’s 4th Movement to ambush her ears. Cupping her ears as she forces herself into the room, Schwert glares at the rooms on occupant.
Wu Jinyuan casually sips at his coffee through the straw in the ration bottle. He bobs his head as the music reaches a crescendo. Schwert tries shouting through the noise but Jinyuan easily ignores her.
Then the music stops as the captain pounds the mute button on the wall console. “What is wrong with you?!” she demands,” You had three radio calls on the bridge over the last hour!”
The 2nd Lieutenant takes another thoughtful sip of his coffee,” Did you know that it was the custom in Ancient Rome for the men to place their right hand on their testicles when taking an oath? The modern term 'testimony' is derived from this tradition.”
The odd trivia is enough to make Schwert flinch. “What the hell does that have to do with-?!”
The captain looks up at the wall behind where Jinyuan is sitting. “…And what is that?”
Jinyuan looks at her then looks up at the wall. “Oh, that? That’s a painting.”
“A painting.”
“Yep, I’m sure someone as educated as you are has seen a painting before. Maybe scribbled one as a toddler? It’s fun you know.”
“It’s a painting two deck levels high.”
Indeed, the painting in question is five meters tall by seven meters wide. The elegant oil painting depicts a very flattering and patriotic scene of Win Jinyuan in battle gear leading forth Zeon soldiers to what can be assumed to be epic victory.
“I think it’s good for morale. Mine actually.”
“You extended our stay in drydock for a week so you can stuff a two story painting into your quarters.”
“An astounding feat to Sergeant McTurney and his crew at Zum City if I say so myself.”
“Aren’t you being a bit too, I dunno, EXTRAVAGANT about this, Mr. Jinyuan? You are, afterall, an officer in the Mobile Assault Force.”
“Oh, c’mon Jeanne. Gihren Zabi has more artwork in HIS BATHROOM than all of the curator in Paris on Earth. I tell you, that man is going to have issues.”
“You’re one to talk and do not call me Jeanne.”
“Ack, I’m just a victim of someone not having a sense of humor.”
“You’re calling that whole thing not having a sense of humor?!”
“Look,” insists Jinyuan as he places his coffee in a holder,” Kycilia Zabi’s response told me everything about the state of affairs in our so call “glorious” Duchy of Zeon.”
“Oh, a woman getting startled by a pervert grabbing her ass can tell you all of that?”
“Of course, it shows signs of stress, denial, paranoia, and a limitation for surprises. And at least Kycilia Zabi understands perverts.”
“Why do you say that?” asks Schwert, not knowing if she wants to know the answer.
“Well, why else would she send you?”
“WHAT?!”
“Well,” says Jinyuan as he cups his hands together in a philosophical pose,” she obviously could tell by our brief time together what I expect out of such FINE women… why else would she send you?”
“No wait-“
“Especially coming to see me in a skirt like you did that day…”
“You mistook me for the escort girl you called!”
“Most women your age would take that as a compliment.”
“Look, Lieutenant Jinyuan,” declares Schwert as she makes her way to the door,” you’ll be on the bridge when you’re needed and you will ACT like an officer. Or so help me god if this… plan of yours that the Zabis endorsed fails, I WILL shoot you.”
As the door swooshed shut behind the furious captain, Jinyuan got up to turn the music back on.
“Not the first nor the last woman to promise me that.”
