Aurem lay in his cot aboard the small transport craft that was carrying his and Arieta's mobile suits to the arctic. The wind whirled heavy snow outside as if to remind them it was getting colder. Aurem, who was buried under several blankets, couldn't really feel much of the cold though. Arieta however, could be seen shivering every now and then as she tried her best to cook something edible with the transport craft's mediocre cooking equipment.
In their last battle Aurem had broken several of his ribs after being violently tossed around his cockpit by artillery fire. Ever since then Arieta had insisted that he sleep in the cot, that he not move, and that she be allowed to cook and take care of him. Aurem was more than a little confused, but was happy to see that she at least still cared a little bit.
He wasn't quite sure she'd forgiven him entirely though. She was nowhere near as talkative as she was before, mostly speaking only to give him instructions like, "Stay in bed," or, "Eat this." Since she hadn't really forgiven him, and he hadn't really finished apologizing, there was an awkward sort of tension that neither one seemed to know how to break. Aurem also hadn't wanted to risk messing things up anymore than he already had with his ill-practiced conversations.
Or so he thought earlier. Now that they were approaching their destination in the arctic, and Aurem had nearly finished healing, he began to feel a little more annoyed each day that Arieta forced him to remain in his cot resting. He saw her shiver again.
"I'm actually feeling a lot better now," Aurem said as he stood up. Arieta's face tensed. He couldn't tell whether she was about to cry, or whether she was just steeling herself to force him back into his cot. He was tired of the awkward silence between them. He decided to just continue with his apology anyway and hope for the best. "I wanted to say--"
Aurem's apology was abruptly cut off as Arieta practically tackled him into a hug. A little stunned and now more confused than ever, words failed Aurem entirely.
"If you're ribs are really better, then I don't feel bad about this," Arieta said shivering and squeezing harder as if that would help her warm up faster.
Aurem finally recovered from his shock and returned her embrace. She was a little warmer now, but was still trembling.
"I'm sorry."
Her trembling slowed. They remained as they were, the food on the stove forgotten entirely.
