Derek's nap was short lived, as a knock and a voice at the door awoke him.
"Seaman Carter? You're needed in the brig."
"Huh? What for?" Derek asked, opening the door.
"Ah well.. seems our first interrogation didn't go so well, sooo..... you're up!" The young crewman said nervously.
"I'm not really an interrogator you know..."
"Yeah we checked around the ship.... no one is."
Derek Sighed, "I'll give it a shot I guess, don't blame me if we don't get anything outta him."
"Maybe I should take the whiskey.... get him drunk? Nah, couldn't be that easy..." Derek thought as he headed to the brig. As he neared the holding cells, a young woman with a bruised face passed him leaving. Rachel Arronax was the name on her uniform, and she did not look happy. Behind her an even angrier... little girl? Derek looked back to find that he wasn't imagining it. As he stepped up to the cell door, he straightened his uniform and unlocked it. Inside was a man slouching on the bunk, completely ignoring Derek's entry.
"Lieutenant Jinyuan, I presume?" Derek asked, the sound of his disinterest hanging off the words.

Wu Jinyuan looked up as the door opened a mere few minutes from his last visitor. The two girls were amusing, though he was probably a few decks away from the nearest condom anyway.
His amused expression turned into a resigned one as he saw the Federal soldier walk in. It is the same kind of look you get when you deal with tech support based in a foreign country.
"I'm sorry, office hours are from 0900 to 1700 hours," advised the Zeon businessman," come back tomorrow when we are open for business."

"What idiot thought I'd be any good at this..." Derek sighed, adjusting his collar and trying to decide how to interrogate someone.
"Well, I'm sure you can tell I'm no excuse for an interrogator," He paused, leaning against the cell wall but keeping a close eye on the enemy officer. He couldn't let his guard down even if they were locked in a guarded cell. "But you're stuck with me so lets make the best of it. As you could figure, what we want is the usual secret plans, info on new weapons, fleet positions, strategies, etc..."
Stepping forward from the wall, Derek continued, "So... what do you want in exchange? Threats of violence, torture and the like seem pretty pointless to me. But if I don't get anything out of you, I'm sure they'll just ship you off to some proper interrogator who wouldn't have such reservations."
The Zeon officer continued to give an annoyingly authoritative stare, but for some reason Derek's thoughts drifted to the young test pilot he passed in the hall. He couldn't get it out of his mind, so he had to ask.
"Also. the two you were speaking with before I came in... was one of them a little kid? What's up with that?"

So... this is what they mean by hiring the lowest bidder...
Wu Jinyuan leans back against the wall and shrugged. "Beats me kid, the kindergartener was wearing one of your officer uniforms. You may need to check with your quartermaster if there is anything missing."
That question proved alot to Jinyuan about what he knew of the EFSF and his own Duchy of Zeon military. He raised an eyebrow as his voice took a lecturing tone.
"So what exactly am I suppose to call you? John Doe? Sailor?"

"Carter's fine." Derek said, "Now as I was saying, what's it gonna take to get some info out of you? Are you one of those 'Torture me all you want! I'll never talk!' sorts? Or are you actually reasonable."
Derek scratched his head, he wasn't very talkative as it stood, much less to an enemy officer. "Definitely should've brought the whiskey..."
"Listen, I'm not interested in your loyalty, sense of honor or whatever lead you to do the things you did. You fought us, you lost, that's all there is to that. It's what you do from here that matters, you can talk or you can sit there. But sooner or later that bunk's gonna start getting real uncomfortable, and you'll get real tired of us low-pay robot jockeys coming in here asking the same question. So what's it gonna be?"

That deserved another raised eyebrow. Wu Jinyuan leaned forward and tilted his head a little.
"This is your first time isn't it Carter?" he asked," yeah this is your first time."
The Zeon lieutenant sat up straight and clapped his hands together like a parent about to talk to their kids about a touchy subject.
"Okay, look. The first time you interrogate someone is alot like the first time you had sex... You have absolutely no idea what you are doing but it is exciting and... one way or the other it's over way too fast."
Jinyuan paused as a thought crossed his mind.
"You did have sex before right?"

Derek's eye twitched slightly at the comment. "Well, now I see why those other two were to ticked...."
"You must need your hearing checked, I've mentioned twice already that I'm not an interrogator." Derek said, having about enough of this idiocy. "You don't wanna talk? Beautiful, I'm sure anyone here would be sick of your voice after the first word. I'm sure you feel all high and mighty being questioned by a bunch of grunts, but 2nd Lieutenant ain't exactly top of the food chain pal. You don't outrank anyone here, the minute you entered this cell you got promoted to shit under my boot. Congratulations." He said, turning toward the door with a scowl.

A victorious smirk bloom on Wu Jinyuan's face as he watched yet another Federal soldier storm out his cell door. For months, the lieutenant has been playing this sort of mindgame with Captain Jeanne Schwert. Back and forth he went, tweaking and improvising his usual confident business attitude. This was a ballet, a mental martial art of sorts. The only surprise is that so many EFSF interrogators are lined up for him.
But none of that matters. There are things set in motion that doesn't need Jinyuan's direct involvement.
"Knowing what you are not, is the first step Carter!" advised Jinyuan," .. and knowing is half the battle. Do shut the door on your way out."

Halfway out the door Derek cringed at Jinyuan's final remark. Slowly, he shut the door, and walked over to the prisoner. Standing quite close he replied.
"You really need to learn when to shut up." He said, grabbing Jinyuan by the collar and lifting him with his left hand, and delivering the hardest punch he could manage directly into the bridge of the Zeon's nose, bouncing his skull off the cell wall. Dropping him, he walked calmly out the door and locked it behind him.
"The guys in charge probably won't like that much... but man he deserved it." Derek thought, smirking a little as he wandered off to find some food.

Under the single lightbulb of the cell, Jinyuan tasted his blood. The lieutenant licked his lips. Nothing surprising there. He's been hit before and the freedom he gave Schwert in that regard was used with finesse.
He sat back up and touch the small tender spot on his nose. Not as bad as he expected. But Jinyuan learned something useful. These interrogations last less than five minutes.
He looked down at the palm of his hand. A pen. Of all things to grab, it was a pen. But he started with less before.

Heading back to his room, Derek was stopped by the same nervous crewman. "Not again.... What is it now?" he thought as the inexperienced soldier approached him.
"So.... how did it go?"
"Uhh.... I tried but....." Derek started.
"No good eh?"
"I broke his face."
"Well he's probably trained to resist questioning and... YOU DID WHAT!?" The crewman was mortified by the statement. "You can't do that! We've gotta get a medic in there now! Oh man.... well, I'll go call the medic, you've gotta sign this form about interrogating a POW... crap this is bad..."
"Oh don't get so worked up I'm sure he's fine." Derek tried to reassure the young man, reaching for his pen. "Wait, I just had it..." He thought aloud, searching his pockets until it hit him.
"That dirty little! Hey you!" He shouted at the crewman, who was already running to call a medic, "Tell the guards to check him before the let the medic in, he might have something he can use as a weapon!"

...5 ...4 ...3 ...2 ...
The sound of the heavy lock on the jail door echoed in the small cell. A Federal marine bursted in, pistol drawn at Wu Jinyuan. The Zeon lieutenant had his hands on his head while reclining against the wall. Two more Federal marines followed in after the first.
"Alright, hand it over jerkface."
Jinyuan raised an eyebrow. "Hand over what?"
"The thing you took from Carter."
The captured Zeon officer blinks for a few moments then gives a surrendering sigh.
"Fine, here you go. Here's your stapler back." The Federal Marine yanked the black office stapler away from Jinyuan. The soldiers stepped back as a corpsman came in and took a look at Jinyuan.
After a few moments of curious inspection, the corpsman declared that Jinyuan needed no medical attention. The Zeon lieutenant watched the jail door close with an amused expression.

Derek quickly made his way back to the cell, just in time for the marines to clear out and re-lock the door. "We found your stapler, he gave it up without a fight." The marine told him as he entered the room.
"STAPLER!? Where the hell did he find a stapler?" Derek asked confused.
"So.... this isn't your stapler?"
"No, he stole a pen from me, but at this rate, who knows what else he has in there." Derek said, unlocking the door and stepping inside.
"Alright, empty your pockets."
