For clarification, the reason we were blocked was that the balloon fleet was actually broken up into two parts yesterday.
The part with the real ship (Fleet A) blockaded, while the second part with all balloons (Fleet B) attacked us, thus forcing us to automatically fail to run the blockade presented by Fleet A.
However, please note Eld changed the rules regarding Balloon ships. While normally the ZEF, if attacked by non-Balloon ships would simply have to face the attackers and not face the blockade fleet (although having its movement forfeitted), balloon ships, if acting as an attacker, will still allow the blockade fleet to engage the ZEF while at the same time automatically forfeiting the movement just for being attacked (whether the ZEF won or lost would be irrelevent).
Examples:
(Note: A fleet made of real and balloon ships function in the same fashion as a fleet made entirely of real ships, so for the purposes of this example, I will use them interchangeably).
ZEF is moving past EF blockade fleet made of real / mixed ships. The ZEF will have to fight their way out of their location. If ZEF wins, the ZEF moves. If ZEF loses, the ZEF does not move.
ZEF is moving past EF blockade fleet made of entirely balloon ships. ZEF moves uncontested.
ZEF is moving past EF blockade fleet made of real / mixed ships, and the ZEF is also attacked by another EF fleet of real / mixed ships. ZEF will fight the attacking EF fleet, but not the EF blockade fleet. However, the ZEF's movement will be blocked automatically.
ZEF is moving past EF blockade fleet made entirely of real / mixed ships, and the ZEF is also attacked by another EF fleet made entirely of balloon ships. The ZEF will be engaged by the attacking EF fleet and the EF blockade fleet.
ZEF is moving past EF blockade fleet made entirely of balloon ships, and the ZEF is also attacked by another EF fleet made of real /mixed ships. The ZEF will engage the attacking EF fleet, but its movement will not be blocked at all.
ZEF is moving past EF blockade fleet made entirely of balloon ships, and the ZEF is also attacked by another EF fleet made entirely of balloon ships. The ZEF will engage the attacking EF fleet, but its movement will not be blocked at all.
tl;dr, if you use a balloon ship to attack an enemy unit that is moving past a friendly blockade and they are CAUGHT by the friendly blockade, then the enemy unit WILL have to engage the blockade AND have its movement automatically blocked due to the balloon ship attack.

I still fail to see why we couldn't have just made a break for it once it was clear there was only one real ship in the mix, because as far as I can tell, nobody has OCD that would've compelled them to pop every. last. balloon.
It's stupid. I mean, free VP is nice, but still, getting stopped by a fleet that was virtually unarmed is moronic.

Well, if we learned anything, just keep a handful of individual balloon ships around +3DE and whenever an enemy unit enters +3DE, attack them with a balloon ship every day. Short of having magic dice, they'll get autocockblocked AND still have to fight the SDF.
So clutch!
