Bryce stood outside of the base at Constantinople. The warm sun in the October sky was shining brightly. Usually, such good weather was to be taken as a happy thing. However, an ominous cloud of war loomed over everyone. The Federation is undergoing Operation Odessa, ready to strike at multiple Zeon compounds. Despite the fearsome weapons that Zeon crafted up, the Earth Federation still look to meet their enemies head on. Such an overwhelming force they’ve amassed too. The determination of those soldiers to face their foes was very admirable indeed. It impressed Bryce more so than when Zeon assisted Side 6 with their independence. This was true courage, it was clear.
Bryce turned to enter the base as he walked down the hallways, much more personnel scurrying about due to their encroaching engagement with the Federation. Usually such a force would strike him as even slightly nervous. For example, the two times that the 87th lurked around the corner, waiting to jump on the Zeon Terrestrial Assault Force fleets were times where Bryce was not only nervous, but had an anxious excitement flowing through his body. Right now, though, he felt… Calm… He figured it was Zeon’s time to get things handed right back to them. It seemed like due punishment for their merciless execution of the 08th MS Team pilots. Bryce never did agree to their decision of execution. Those pilots at least deserved some sort of chance. If their chance failed, then execution would be a feasible option. Shaking his head, he accidentally bumped into one of the other soldiers at the base. Before he could even apologize, the soldier was already off again in a wild hurry.
Upon reaching his bunk, Bryce closed the door behind him and rested his back up against it. A thought crossed his mind, once again. He couldn’t stop thinking about it, really. He met up with Arianna on the battlefield. It was almost like a nightmare seeing her right in front him. Bryce was thankful though that neither of them fired on the other. If only they were alone. The Feds rattled him up quite a bit inside the Hildolfr that day and if he was in any other mobile weapon, he’d probably be dead. The battles between Zeon and the Federation were getting more violent as time went on and Bryce knew that he would inevitably be seeing Arianna more and more on the field of combat. He couldn’t have that. He couldn’t be on the other side, not able to protect her when she needed him the most. It didn’t look like his strength alone would be enough to stop the war in time to keep Arianna away from action.
Bryce went over to his bed and reached under it to grab a large duffel bag and placed it on the sheets. He went over to the closet and gathered up what little set of casual attire he had with him and packed it away, along with the other little personal items he brought along with him on his military expedition. It was time he left. Zeon served its purpose of helping Bryce find Arianna. Now that he no longer needed such a tool, he had to be by her side. He will go protect her on the battlefield; he will help her win the war. They would do it together. Fighting for the Federation is what he now wanted because being with Arianna is what he wanted. He would have no trouble getting into the ranks of the Federation. His experience being in espionage helped him learn how to manipulate every such angle to make things a welcoming sight to Bryce. He could even get additional help from Arianna herself, if need be.
Slinging the duffel bags' strap over his shoulder, Bryce headed out of his room. With all the commotion going on thanks to the Federation advancement, he didn’t look out of place at all. He was committed to his goal, no doubts or regret looming overhead. The time he shared with some of the men of Zeon could never replace the love he had for Arianna. There was something exciting to the idea of fighting alongside Arianna after all of this, such a nostalgic feel. They would be fighting for a common goal and working together, just like they were doing back in Side 6 back when life was simpler. His pace started to pick up as he ventured down the hallways. No more sneaking around, no more dealing with unpleasant people, no more putting a mask on. His pace quickened more. He wouldn’t have to smile for everyone while he cast a glare when they turned their backs. He started to run. He could finally be himself, again. He could finally start enjoying life instead of cursing it at every turn. His defection was his ticket to freedom.
Bryce reached the hangar and looked out from the balcony from which he stood. He took in one last look of his temporary home and then proceeded down to the bottom level to one of the un-serviced vehicles. With so much commotion going on, the utilization of the personnel vehicles wasn’t an uncommon sight. Tossing his duffel bag into the passenger seat, Bryce hopped in and started the vehicle. He wasted no time in leaving the hangar as the sooner he got out, the better. As he drove through the compound, he wondered where he would head off to. That, however was something he’s have to deal with when he was on the outside. Approaching the gates, the guard calmly stepped out of his post and slew his gun over his shoulder. Bryce met the guard with a warming smile as he slowed his vehicle.
“Leaving the base so soon, Private Hollerfelt?” The guard joked around as he patted Bryce’s shoulder.
“Yeah, I have to head into town to gather up the slackers that haven’t come back from their R&R. Irusk will have my head if they aren’t here in time.” Bryce made a motion with his hand to symbolize his head being chopped off.
“Hah! Right then, hurry on back, though. You don’t want the Feddies catching ya while you’re out there.” The guard chuckled as he went back into his post to open the gate for Bryce to leave.
The plan went smoothly as usual. Talking his way out of things was a nifty talent, indeed. Nothing could hold him back now. He was in the clear and was ready to meet up with Arianna. He would have to contact her using the number she snuck into his pants pocket the last time he met her back in South America. Tilting his head back and taking in a deep breath, he let it out with a smile. The clear blue sky above was becoming more welcoming by the second.
“An Earth Federation pilot.” Bryce shrugged. “Works for me!” He laughed as he put more pressure on the accelerator.
