The town seemed almost like a marsh. Smoke rolled through the city streets like a thick fog, and machine gun fire buzzed around them like so many mosquitoes. Through it, The Beam Team cut like a hot knife through butter. Or rather, like a volume of Minovsky particle plasma contained by an I-field in such a way that the resulting shape appears to be a sword of light, burning through pretty much anything. If Kyle referred to the technological marvel as a "beam" saber, it was only for expediency's sake. In his head, he knew what he was talking about.
A bazooka round glanced off his EZ-8's newly-armored shoulder. The suit didn't even flinch - Kyle hadn't told it to - but Kyle sure did. Blast! Shoulda dodged that slow-moving dinosaur tech. Kyle was not fond of traditional projectile weapons. He thought he ought to be able to dodge any projectile that was highly-visible and didn't move at close to the speed of light. Then again, there are a lot of them. He dodged a couple more.
Madelaine and Tybalt were dodging artillery fire as well. Tybalt's GM was almost dancing, but Madelaine's just looked like a robot trying to dance. Fortunately, the effect was the same; both of them had made it through thus far with no major damage. Kyle spied a Dom ducking behind a nearby building. Calculating its trajectory, he fired a beam at the building, and was rewarded with the sound of an explosion on the other side. Just another reason why beam weapons are so neat.
The enemy fire intensified and thickened, and the group was forced back. Madelaine and Tybalt were popping through their beam spray gun rounds like children popping Pez. "Out of beam ammo; switching to guns!" Madelaine smiled as she grabbed her good old projectile-firing 90mm machine gun. Now that's a weapon. new tech was all well and good, but putting holes through your target with high-speed pieces of metal was a joy that Madelaine did not ever want to move past.
Kyle caught sight of a strange looking Zaku model with a few extra arm-appendages, and he wondered what it was doing on the battlefield. But they weren't here to gawk at strange mobile suits. The Beam Team pushed toward the coast, machine guns and vulcans blazing. Kyle threw in the occasional beam rifle blast when an enemy mobile suit appeared. They were making good time in their push to Odessa proper.
Kyle saw the shots coming too late, and 2 14-inch artillery rounds slammed into his new EZ-8. Kyle nearly started crying. That's gonna leave a mark. He continued pressing on as best he could; the damage didn't prevent him from moving or shooting, so he was well enough off. The remaining Zeon forces were beginning to retreat behind the base defenses, and The Beam Team took potshots at the retreating Zakus through the smoke, and continued their advance.
