"Petty Officer 1st Class Jay Tanner! I like the sound of that!.. Or do I?" he stood against the wall of a corridor, hand on his chin as he pondered the thought, staring at the ceiling and its lights.
He shrugged his shoulders, allowing his red leather jacket to slide back onto his body for a more comfortable fit. He turned and began to walk down the corridor, ignoring the others passing him by as he was still in contemplation.
"Naw, Jay Tanner needs a rank of a little more respect. Doesn't have to be the top, but needs to be higher... Yeah... Something that sounds cool! Petty kind of kills the mood," he grinned, nodding as he let out a laugh, confusing those around him as he spoke to himself out loud.
Jay finally made his way to the cafeteria, waiting his turn in line to grab a tray of food, and then proceeded to take a seat at an empty table. It wasn't that Jay didn't want to be seated with others or even talk to anyone else. It was more the fact that he was lost in thought and didn't need anyone else interrupting him, else he'd be stuck on that thought forever! Well, he thought it was forever, despite it being only a few more minutes.
He poked around at his food with a fork, occasionally picking up something to take a bite out of it, his eyes locked at the ceiling, lost deep in thought. If he was going to get a higher rank, he would need to show everyone his skills. The legacy his parents left behind. It is going to be interesting for him to get people to recognize his abilities. Not hard, not east, but interesting.
"I can show them. They will surely be impressed once I get my turn!" Jay exclaimed before he was interrupted by a loud bang as a tray was slammed on the tabletop across from him, causing him to almost fall backwards out of his seat.
"WAKE UP! You're doing that thing again, you know," a female voice called out to him as Jay let go of his chest.
"Erin! Why the hell do you do that to me!? Good lord, you know you can just say hello in a more subtle way?"
Chief Petty Officer Erin August, daughter of Captain Alfred August. These two have been around each other ever since Cpt. August brought him to A Baoa Qu. She is responsible for a big part of Jay's success so far in his career. Despite his own determination, she is the catalyst to enhance his already profound talents.
"What's on your mind, sunshine?" Erin called out to him, teasingly with a smile.
Sighing, he shook his head, muttering, "Again with the Sunshine... Well I was just thinking that Petty Officer 1st Class Jay Tanner just doesn't sound cool enough. Not like a certain someone with the title Chief Petty Officer..." he finished, his eyes narrowing towards her.
Erin crossed her arms, turning and making a face, "Hmph! I don't get promotions because they SOUND cool. I get them because I deserve and worked for them. Unlike SOMEONE who just wants to walk in on promotions,"
"Heh... Sorry, I'm just a bit anxious to do something more, you know? I want to live up to what my parents were," he shrugged a little.
Turning back to him, Erin's face softened, "I understand how you feel, but we both know our 'folks want us safe more than anything. They would be proud of us even if we don't become high ranking officers," she let out a warm smile, "It could be worse,"
Jay blushed, quickly turning his head to the side to look at the floor, "Yeah... I think you're right. I still want to do my best!" he said turning back to her with a closed fist, a look of determination on his face, "I want to kick some Federation ass!"
Erin laughed, shaking her head, "Take it easy, sunshine. There will be plenty to do once we're asked to move. We just got to play the waiting game, right? There will be plenty to do until then," she finished as she stood from the table, winking at Jay before picking up her tray to leave.
Jay stared blankly after receiving the wink, not blushing this time, but lost in thought, trying to piece together what she just said. He wondered what she possibly could mean by that, and hoped he wasn't wrong in his theories.
"If I'm right, then things really are looking up for me! Promotions, battle, and a girl!" he grinned and bit his lip, trying to contain the excitement that just start to overwhelm him.
