Aurem stood in the middle of a street of what looked to him to be a space colony. It looked familiar in an odd sort of fashion. Walking down the street, he began to recognize some of the stores from his childhood.
He passed a candy store. A vision of himself, only younger, and his brother Xenos trying to sneak through the front door with pockets full of candy appeared in front of Aurem. An fat, angry, old lady caught the younger looking versions of Aurem and his brother and began yelling at them about how stealing was wrong. Their faces paled. Xenos immediately began apologizing while Aurem silently returned the candy.
Aurem chuckled to himself, remembering how they had listen to her for hours before she finally decided they'd been punished enough. The vision of his childhood faded as Aurem moved on down the street.
He knew why this place looked familiar now. It was Side 2. Aurem decided he must be dreaming. Side 2 had been destroyed in the war, so he couldn't really be there. He kept walking. Other visions of his childhood appeared as he walked down the street, re-visiting places he knew could only exist in his memory now.
The arcade he and Xenos used to play at appeared and vanished. His High School and eventually his college appeared and vanished. The burger joint where he had had his first date appeared and vanished. He couldn't remember the girl's name or face, but felt like he should. As he stared at her more, she slowly transformed into a figure that resembled a slightly younger Arieta.
Aurem blinked and rubbed his eyes. My mind must be playing tricks on me, there's no way that's possible. Arieta herself told me she was from Earth and that she wanted to visit space. Besides she'd be dead if she were on Side 2. DEAD! Just like everyone else...
The world lurched in Aurem's mind, and when it came to a stop, he was standing in front of his house. Aurem blinked and the house was on fire.
"Oh no..." Aurem said aloud.
This part of the dream was all too familiar.
A slightly younger Aurem and a girl he still couldn't recognize came running out of the burning building. They turned and looked back at the burning building, waiting, holding hands. A ring glinted on the girls hand.
Was that always there? Aurem thought to himself, remembering past versions of the dream.
"Mom!" Dream-Aurem yelled back into the house.
There was a loud crash as the roof caved in on the second story. Deep within the house a faint female voice could be heard crying for help. Dream-Aurem steeled himself to charge back into the burning building, with the girl, who was beginning to look more and more like Arieta again, begging Aurem not to go.
A young man in a Zeon uniform and gas mask came running toward the house, gun in hand. Dream-Aurem didn't see him coming. Just as he was about to charge, a bullet ricocheted off the the door frame. The man in the Zeon uniform had the gun pointed straight at Dream-Aurem.
"Xenos! What are you doing? I have to save..." Dream-Aurem's voice trailed off as he fully took notice of his brother and what was going on around him.
Xenos had the rank of Lieutenant sewn on his collar. Dream-Aurem seemed surprised at the uniform. His surprise grew as he looked over his brother's shoulder to see a cloud of gas sweeping toward them down the street.
"Not to worry little brother, I'm here to save you. I'll make sure it's quick for you, your mother, and your girlfriend there." Xenos said taking careful aim.
"You did this?" Dream-Aurem asked pointing at the gas behind his brother.
There was a loud bang and everything went black. Aurem never could remember exactly how he'd escaped, only that his brother had betrayed him and his family.
Is that right? Why can't I remember that girl's face properly? Why does she always look like Arieta? Was I engaged before? How did the house catch fire? Why can't I remember?
