Dear Users,

Simple Machines is proud to announce the release of the 2nd beta of SMF 2.1. This version contains many improvements over Beta 1 and also fixes many bugs that were discovered following its release. Among the notable improvements:

There is now an interface in the admin center for configuring default notification/alert preferences.
For new installs, MySQL's InnoDB storage engine is used by default if available. This will provide better performance.
Support for fulltext search with InnoDB tables on MySQL 5.6.4 or higher.
Optional two-factor authentication support for added security.

Please remember that the minimum requirements of SMF have been increased to PHP 5.3.8+ and MySQL 5.0.3+ or PostgresSQL 8.0+. Servers running a lower version of either will not be able to run SMF 2.1 and we do not intend to support them. If you have a server running an older version, you can either upgrade your server software or stay at an older version of SMF. SMF 2.1 has also dropped support for IE6 and IE7 but will continue to work with IE9+ (although IE10+ is really recommended) and browsers having similar/fuller standards compliance (any modern version of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera etc will be fine).

The general installation and upgrading procedure remains the same, however, once you upgrade from an older version to 2.1 you cannot go back, so please take careful consideration before upgrading any live site.. Have a look at Installing and Upgrading SMF in the Online Manual to find out more. You cannot upgrade to 2.1 Beta 2 via the package manager; instead you will need to carry out the "Large Upgrade" process. SMF 2.1 can be obtained from the Download section.

Please note: Because this is a beta release, translations and language strings other than English have not been finalized and may not be complete yet.

Are all the 2.1 Beta 1 bugs fixed? I still see 129 issues on GitHub. It was around 126 for quite a long time.

Great to see.

If you're still using RHEL 6 or CentOS 6, you can use the php54, php55u, or php56u packages from the IUS Community repository. If you're using RHEL 5 or CentOS 5, there are also php54 packages at the same, but you really should be looking to update your core OS soon.

Sorry, I cant seem to find your list of bug reports and fixes on github that contibute to SMF being able to release by tommorow to keep you happy.

Your welcome to help or wait just like anyone else or use another software if you dont want to wait.

Today I updated my theme site, SMF 2.0.10 to the SMF 2.1 Beta 2 and all went very good as far as installation, and It's cool that it does show old themes, so no one try to install them, Our portal installed without issue and works well on this, and I'll be working other tests shortly>!

So far Very Nice Job!

And the Core2 theme is nice also!

Not suggesting, Just saying that, I'm using the Beta 2 on a live site, from the day after it's release, and no issues with the SMF 2.1 Beta 2 as of now! ( same goes for my test sites!

Note this is still not recommended! I just like test stuff!

I would not ... The mods are not comparable yet, and you may not get your stuff back once you go forward, unless you really know what your doing!

Trust us, it isn't. Although there are no (known) issues with security, there are features which are bit broken.

While it might be workable, it's still a bad idea unless you're very experienced in coding. While we can't stop you from doing as you wish, remember that the beta is experimental. It may have data loss bugs, security bugs, cause high server loads, or any of many other things. As it's a beta, it will certainly have broken or rough features and there is no active support for people using it on live sites.

Are all of the issues documented in GIT ? Or is there another list of defects not available to the public ? Just curious.

I agree that one should not use a Beta product unless it's for a test site; that is what the Beta designation represents.
