Biggest turtle hatch ever for UTRCA sends 3,000 hatchlings into the Thames River


Aptly, perhaps, it will be a crawl, not a sprint, to the finish line.

But they’re getting there.

This year, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority species-at-risk team is releasing more than 3,000 spiny softshell turtle hatchlings back into the Thames, the biggest hatch ever.

“This is an absolutely tremendous year . . . by far our best year,” said Scott Gillingwater, the authority’s species-at-risk biologist. “Our previous efforts are paying off; we are now seeing young adults nesting for the first time, which were hatched in our efforts in the 1990s and early 2000s.”

Gillingwater said efforts are slowing the rate of decline of the turtle in the Thames, perhaps even stopping the decline, but they’re far from historical levels.

“Our next goal is (to) increase populations to reach historical levels in the river, which were much higher than they are today,” he said.

It will take time, though.

Maturity usually takes about “12 to 15 years before a young female starts laying eggs, but often they have a lot of failures in their first nests, so you’re probably looking at a 20 to 30, even 40-year-old animal before you’re getting consistent large nests,” Gillingwater said.

Reports in the 1800s noted, maybe with exaggeration, that “it’s impossible to paddle in the river without hitting a softshell turtle,” said Gillingwater, who said the river was nonetheless “teeming” with the species.

Gillingwater said the authority’s team of volunteers and one paid assistant are vital to the success of the project. The team receives money from federal and provincial governments as well as private donations.

“It is a very long process to locate nests, process them, bring the eggs back to the lab, set them up in incubators and measure and weigh and release all of these young — with success comes a larger workload. It couldn’t be done without the people who have joined the team,” he said.

The volunteers’ workoad is optional, Gillingwater said, “but they’re here sometimes six, seven days a week, and sometimes I try to force them to take days off and it’s impossible to get them to stay at home . . . They see meaningful reason we do this work. And we’re seeing the results in front of our eyes — we’re seeing what we’re doing having an effect on the wild population.”

An Agent on Facebook,@emjayism, made an observation that pretty much sums up what I think about what may have happened to +A Detection Algorithm.

Look at it this way, my pursuits are constantly taking me to places that some could look at and assume are just shadows. Far from it. No place is more powerful than one where the energy is palpable even long after the folks who first discovered it have gone to dust.

Take ruins for example. Some folks see them and only see the absence, what once must have been. I see the presence, what was so powerful that even now, thousands of years after the place was vital, it remains.

Why? I don't know. If you asked +Roland Jarvis he would say something about how the Ultimate helps preserve those patterns, and how we experience them when we're near them. As far as I'm concerned, I don't know the answer.

I also don't know if AI's are patterned in the Ultimate, but one of the things that I know for certain is that we never really forget anything. We're a pretty amazing species that way.

Might be kind of a zen way of looking at things, but I feel that things that are absent can remain present, and things that seem dead can live on.

I made roasted red pepper hummus with toasted sesame oil for the annual Ford Astronomy Club picnic. =D

For years I been making hummus by guesstimation and by taste. After the last few times I have managed to hone in on exact measurements. =D

Recipe:

3 cans of garbanzo beans / chick peas, drained
1 roasted red pepper (e.g. equivalent of a whole pepper)
4 tablespoons crushed garlic
9 tablespoons toasted sesame oil (or extra virgin olive oil, but the sesame oil is tastier)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 cup tahini

Add all ingredients to a large food processor and blend until smooth.

Top with pine nuts / pignolias and smoked Spanish paprika.

Serve with pita bread or baked pita crackers.

Is among the 20 most beautiful lakes in the world to 17th place. The park covers an area of 33,000 hectares and includes 16 lakes in succession, connected by waterfalls.Plitvice is the oldest national park in Southeast Europa.All'interno the park there are also many caves of which only a small part is agibile.I lakes are formed by two rivers: the White River and the Black River, which flow in the river Korana. The waters of these rivers are rich in calcareous salts (mostly calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate), from the dissolution of carbonate rocks forming the geological structure of sito.Questi salts are precipitated by vegetation, forming layers of travertine , a sedimentary rock recently. Over time, these deposits forming real natural dams that act as barriers to water, growing by about a centimeter per year. At one point the water pressure breaks these natural levees, opening new paths in the ground.
This mechanism, in fact common to all the calcareous water, in Plitvice has assumed a particular importance.
