Let's all spam different things it could be stopping a poor desktop from connecting to the internet and ways to test it!!!

1) Have you tried connection to an encrypted site instead of the normal internet? Try going to https://www.google.com and seeing if it load, note the s in https: is important.

2) Have you tried tossing a laptop or gaming console on the same Ethernet cord and seeing if it still connects? Long cords and cords going through walls can be eaten by animals in the middle and that would cause heavy issues.

3) Since you said it wasn't the operating system I assume you re-installed it or something? When shit goes wrong the steps for OS conflict removal would be Restore Point to a few weeks back is available, re-install OS over current OS, If you like try a Linux OS on a CD and see if it can make the thing work, and if you like reinstall from scratch with a format~

4) Also there is the fact that you should never assume it isn't something. Turn off power to everything anyways, it sounds like those annoying customer support guys on the phone but routers/modems are bitchy like that and very well could hate just 1 computer out of 6 which runs through it until you powercycle it.

Next post we'll list essential services in services.msc which are essential to your OS connecting to the internet! What OS is that anyways...

Well, it's already fixed but I'll answer your questions.

1) Have you tried connection to an encrypted site instead of the normal internet? Try going to https://www.google.com and seeing if it load, note the s in https: is important.

^--Yes and it did nothing. Internet was unable to find a network or contact DHCP to get a proper address.

2) Have you tried tossing a laptop or gaming console on the same Ethernet cord and seeing if it still connects? Long cords and cords going through walls can be eaten by animals in the middle and that would cause heavy issues.

^--I tried the cord on my laptop last night when I post the message which is how I knew it wasn't the cord.

^--- I split one of my partitions into a smaller space, formatted the new space, installed Linux on the new space and tried to see if the internet worked on it. No dice.

4) Also there is the fact that you should never assume it isn't something. Turn off power to everything anyways, it sounds like those annoying customer support guys on the phone but routers/modems are bitchy like that and very well could hate just 1 computer out of 6 which runs through it until you powercycle it.

^--- I didn't even talk to the tech support. I cycled the power on the router and modem both and it still didn't correct it.

We're still not sure what was wrong with it, I left the internet capable unplugged after I went to sleep last night and when I woke up this morning I killed the power to my PC completely for a little bit before I plugged the internet back in and it was working. I don't know if the killing the power actually had anything to do with it, but it was just a suggestion my dad gave me cause he said he'd had it happen to him before and that's what he did.
