History: A small-town boy from the South-eastern United States, Nelson had a mostly-undistinguished military career prior to being recruited in the Test Corps. His one notable action, the one that led to his transfer from the regular army, occured over the Atlantic Ocean. His squad was performing a routine patrol with instructions to keep an eye out for a supply fleet flying from Florida to Maine when they saw an enemy: a Doritea-class carrier preparing to launch fighters. Thinking quickly, Nelson and his squad launched a surprise attack on the carrier, catching it - and its previously-unseen escorts - by surprise. The three Aries strafed the carrier's launch deck with their missiles, damaging the equipment before more than a handful of Infestus fighters could deploy. The three Aries quickly pulled away as the European sailors threw off their shock and opened firing, severely damaging the three mobile suits as they fled. Nelson quickly alerted the supply fleet to the danger and sent out a request for reinforcements. Though the nearest American carrier was an hour's cruise away, the distress signal had the effect of scaring off the European ships, who were reluctant to engage American forces without the ability to launch their own fighters.
Nelson and his squadmates were featured in a propaganda broadcast following the event, showcasing their bravery and skill in driving off the fully-loaded carrier, though the broadcast carefully neglected to mention that the squad hadn't sunk any ships or destroyed more than four or five fighters. The lack of kills also meant there wasn't enough merit in the action to warrant a promotion for any of the three pilots. They were instead rewarded quietly by being invited to join the Test Corps where they would be given better machines to work with. Nelson jumped at the chance and was soon assigned to the new mobile suit Tallgeese.
