Service Record: Joining at the age of 21, Raylan Howe serves as a fighter pilot early on using the various fighters in service with the American Union. Eventually he is promoted and transfers over to the mobile suit corps where he is given an Aries. Through out most of his career he is given assignments to patrol South America because of the tensions with the European Empire after the ouster of the Brazillian government.

However during his tour of duty in South America he eventually is incarcerated and tried for murder after stabbing a bar patron to death in a drunken rage. He is convicted and sentenced to death. Before the sentence could be carried out he is pulled from death row to serve again. This time on the West Coast of the United States. Growing tensions between the Japanese Empire and the American Union has resulted in a demand for more troops. With war on the horizon the solution was to allow certain military convicts a second chance at service. Raylan was one of the few that was selected for service again and was thus saved from the hangman's noose.
