Technical and Historical Notes |
The re-unification of the terrestrial warring factions in the early 220's was accomplished as much by the GN drive as by political reconciliation in the name of fighting terrorism. The newly-formed Earth Union set out to standardize its armed forces with GN-powered hardware, with the GN-X mobile suit serving as the flagship of that initiative.
To the Earth Union, the GN drive was both a symbolic and very tangible source of authority. To prevent the units from falling into enemy hands, early GN-X units were equipped with an automatic self-destruct system that would annihilate the mobile suit's upper body if it sustained critical damage. Once full-scale production was underway, a dedicated GN-X variant referred to simply as "Advanced GN-X" was created for better battlefield control. Intended for use by squadron commanders, the Advanced GN-X has been tuned and modified for better handling and a higher overall performance than the base model, with some pilots insisting it even offers a greater degree of mobility than the Human Reform League's pre-unification Ahead. To better withstand enemy attack, the Advanced GN-X mounts a pair of defense rod-like shields to its shoulders, freeing up both arms for offensive purposes - just like the type used on the normal GN shield, the defense system is capable of generating a temporary GN field to block incoming attacks. The distinguishing commander's antenna mounted on the mobile suit's head serves two purposes: aside from allowing better communications and coordination between friendly units, it also includes a provision for the squadron leader to manually seize control of other GN-X units that are keyed to it. With this capability, the Advanced GN-X can recover disabled mobile suits, even if their pilots have been killed or control systems disrupted, and can also prevent the capture of GN technology by self-destructing a crippled unit that cannot otherwise be retrieved.
Compared to the basic GN-X, the Advanced model uses most of the same handheld weaponry, as well as the standard fixed armaments. The Advanced GN-X includes several unique weapons as well, including a special GN beam rifle that can accept one of its own GN beam sabers as a bayonet. One wholly specialized weapon, the GN lance, was also provided for specialized applications. By using the core module of the GN beam rifle as a power source, the GN lance can be used as both a short-to-mid distance ranged weapon and a potent melee implement as well - the particle-infused point allows it to penetrate even physical field barriers with a direct attack, although this does require a certain level of skill. By spearheading the attack, the Advanced GN-X would be able to defeat the defenses of even the most hardened terrorist mobile weapon, allowing its subordinate units to quickly finish the task with massed firepower.
Aside from its use as a squad leader's unit, the Advanced GN-X's high level of performance has also made it popular with frontline commanders and ace pilots of the Earth Union's mobile suit forces, and small "commando units" consisting entirely of them are sometimes deployed to assist with critical operations.
