Technical and Historical Notes

The re-unification of the terrestrial warring factions in the early 220's was accomplished as much by the GN drive as by political reconciliation in the name of fighting terrorism. The newly-formed Earth Union set out to standardize its armed forces with GN-powered hardware, with the GN-X mobile suit serving as the flagship of that initiative. In the period after the founding of the Earth Union, the GN-X was expanded upon into an entire fleet of mobile suits, allowing the Earth Union to totally replace its pre-founding mobile suit squadrons with dedicated variants, dramatically cutting down on overhead and logistics.

The GN-X Cannon, one such variant, is optimized for heavy firepower and long-range support duty. The standard GN-X body is augmented with a number of specific features to better suit the mobile suit's role, including a high-resolution magnification and targeting suite built in to the GN-X's head, giving it a bulbous appearance. An enhanced sensor package enables target acquisition at considerable distances, including an auto-tracking feature to provide combat information to other mobile suits in the squad.

The GN-X Cannon can equip most of the basic GN-X's handheld weapons, but its primary attack method is through the giant GN mega launcher attached to its right shoulder. The variable-output beam weapon can engage and destroy enemy mobile suits and warships at great range, and can be fired in a highly accurate concentrated burst or a charged-up blast attack that can level a significant area of terrain at once. The weapon has a relatively slow rate of fire, necessitating the deployment of an escort unit in the event the enemy is able to close the distance to hand-to-hand combat. To offset the weight of the launcher, the GN-X Cannon features significantly more powerful vernier units, allowing it to keep pace with the standard models.

After its initial deployment in December of UC 221, the GN-X Cannon became a favored weapon to "assassinate" terrorist leaders due to its ability to strike distant targets with pinpoint accuracy. By the mid 220s at least one GN-X Cannon was attached to every patrol squadron, with special artillery units primarily consisting of the mobile suits deployed to assist with the pacification of dug-in renegade positions.
