Technical and Historical Notes

Throughout the operations of the Earth Liberation Army, the GINN and its numerous offspring formed the bulk of ZAFT's mainline mobile suit forces, with many specialized variants and follow-ons designed to increase the mobile suit's performance in specific environments. Several years into the operation, tensions between PLANT and Clound Nine had broken out into shooting battles on several instances, and ZAFT issued a directive to begin developing a wholly new family of mobile suits that would replace the aging GINN and its offshoots. The summation of these efforts developed into the GuAIZ.

In addition to the standard model, which placed emphasis on fairly short-range combat, a follow-on known as the GuAIZ R was rolled out later in the war and intended to supplement the original version. The GuAIZ R replaces the original GuAIZ's extensional arrestors with a pair of powerful magnetically-driven railguns, allowing it to destroy enemy targets significantly beyond the range of standard beam rifles. Further, the high-velocity sabots are not affected by anti-beam barrier systems which were becoming somewhat more common by the 220s, while still being able to defeat most types of armor protection. Otherwise, the GuAIZ R is analogous to the original version.

Much as with the standard model, the GuAIZ R was initially only issued to particularly skilled pilots (albeit those with a preference for shooting engagements), becoming more common as the war progressed. The postwar PLANT National Guard employs a significant number of the mobile suits, with most given the same reactor upgrade as the standard GuAIZ. The roughly identical level of performance and maneuverability, along with sharing about 85% of components, allows for the Guard's deployment of both mobile suits in greater numbers than would be possible using totally different designs, giving their more limited operational budget. A limited amount of GuAIZ Rs have turned up in rogue hands as well, often the same organizations who also employ the standard GuAIZ, which some analysts have
