Technical and Historical Notes

With the success of its first indigenous mobile suit series, the Europe-based defense firm Dahlgren Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (Dahlgren Weapons and Munitions Factories) continued development of weapons technology through most of the 230s. Around UC 234, under mysterious circumstances, a group of former Atlantic Federation engineers wound up on DWM's payroll, bringing with them a medley of documentation and projections about future Federation projects that would never see the light of day. Two years later, DWM produced what was essentially the first Gundam-caliber mobile suit built since the Interregnum.

The DWM-03MS Huckebein ("Magpie") is only vaguely relative to the previous Gespenst and Schutzwald mobile suits, having an essentially entirely new frame and body construction. Exactly how much of the mobile suit's design is owed to the Atlantic Federation's Gundams and how much is the propriety of DWM and its various sources is unknown to anyone outside the design staff. The mobile suit is armored with the very same specifiction of Gundarium alloy as utilized on the Old Earth Federation's machines, making it highly resilient to most ballistic weapons. Though the exterior profile of the head resembles a Gespenst's, it features a more human-looking face and V-fin antenna, typical physical features of a Gundam. It also utilizes extremely efficient power diffusion systems and high-output thrusters, enabling a high degree of mobility in both space and atmospheric conditions, where it can fly freely until its fuel supplies are depleted.

Along with the new mobile suit, a variety of new weapons were also developed. For surprise attacks, a wire-guided incom weapon is mounted in a dedicated launcher in the Huckebein's arm. The incom is an advanced computer-controlled weapon that operates remotely, allowing it to be launched out on its wire and deliver a slashing blow to a nearby target via the built in beam cutter. Though essentially a melee weapon in terms of function, it has an improved reach, and the fast-moving incom is difficult to predict. The heavy M99 beam shotrifle is utilizes a complicated particle acceleration system to allow for powerful single shots as well as a shotgun-like blast theoretically capable of defeating several mobile suits at once. The Huckebein is also provided with the magnetically-driven M202 linear rifle, a highly accurate (if somewhat unwieldy) weapon similar to the primary armament of the Iris/Tesla Leicht armored modules. Though slow-firing, it is capable of defeating most armor protection from a great distance. In addition to a pair of vulcan guns in the classic head-mounted position, the Huckebein is also capable of utilizing most other Gespenst handheld weapons.

The Huckebein has seen relatively limited production, owing to its significant unit production cost, as well as a perceived harshness on pilots compared to the slower but smoother-handling Gespenst. Perhaps fortunately for DWM, fewer still seem to have ended up in the hands of anarchist elements, as Earth Union observers have made their "concerns" with the existence of such a capable mobile suit well known to the company's directors.
