Technical and Historical Notes |
The mobile suit's development history traces back to space colonies, where a humanoid form is able to better maneuver in a zero-gravity environment without expending fuel. With most existing mobile suits destroyed up to and during the Interregnum, when the space colonies at L2, beyond the moon, developed an entirely new line of mobile suits for military purposes. After the announcement of many Earth states forming into the Earth Sphere Alliance, these military programs were fast-tracked to coincide with the creation of the colonies' own armed forces, the Space Revolutionary Army. Although the Army would disband in early UC 224 after the climactic end of the Space War, its mobile suits can still be found throughout the Earth Sphere, and are now operated by both legitimate forces and renegade paramilitary outfits alike.
The RMS-006 Jenice was the first of the Space Revolutionary Army's designs, and set much of the visual trends for follow-ons created in the years afterwards. A single powerful camera, referred to as a mono-eye, is positioned behind a narrow visor, and two large "mustache" cooling vents sprout from the Jenice's otherwise featureless face. Its body is thick and well protected with composite armor, and though it cannot fly in atmosphere its powerful thrusters enable it to make long jet-assisted dashes and jumps. The Jenice was originally designed only for space combat, but was modified for combat in atmosphere to participate in the Earth invasion operation. The Jenice Ground Type is distinguished by its new model number, RMS-006G, as well as prominent shoulder spikes, as it was thought that fierce hand-to-hand combat would be more likely in a terrestrial environment.
The Jenice was developed while mobile suit-portable beam weapons had not yet been re-invented, so it is armed exclusively with projectile weapons. Its primary armament is a 100mm machine gun fed from a large ammunition drum, though it can also equip a heavy-hitting giant bazooka to flatten enemy mobile suits quickly. Two vulcan guns and a pair of machine cannons are mounted in the mobile suit's torso, providing it with a great amount of close-range firepower, and a very large superheated axe makes it a formidable opponent in melee engagements.
Although the Space Revolutionary Army formally disbanded in UC 224, the Jenice continued in service with the successor Cloud Defense Service for several years before the mobile suit was formally retired in favor of the later generations of wartime units. However, the great number of Jenices produced over the course of nearly twenty years, combined with the mobile suit's excellent reliability, has effectively ensured that the trusty unit will be appearing in conflict zones for years to come.
