Technical and Historical Notes

At the founding of the Earth Sphere Alliance, a coalition of most of the economically powerful states of Europe and North America, mobile suit technology was only recently being rediscovered after the catastrophic events of the Interregnum. To rapidly outfit its military with mobile suits, the Alliance settled on a fairly conservative and spartan design that was highly optimized for mass production. Based on a hybrid of pre-Interregnum designs, the Leo served as the Alliance's basic combat mobile suit, as well as the basis of most of its later designs.

As with its successors, the Leo is significantly shorter and of lighter weight and construction than many contemporary mobile suits. While appearing to be rather unremarkable, and potentially even fragile at first glance, the Leo's slim profile and low mass makes it quite maneuverable. When fitted with an optional flight pack, the Leo can cover a great deal of distance quickly, allowing for rapid aerial attacks and quick tactical maneuvers. Although initally designed for terrestrial combat exclusively, the Leo can also be reconfigured for operations in zero gravity via a recalibration of its systems and the addition of a space mobility pack on its back - this configuration is commonly referred to as a Space Leo. Aside from only modest physical strength, the Leo's only true shortfall is its relatively thin armor protection and short sensor range.

The Leo can equip a wide variety of weapons, making it an extremely versatile mobile suit for all kinds of combat situations. Typically, the Leo is armed with either a high-capcity 105mm machine gun or a compact beam rifle, depending on the expected enemy's composition. Leos outfitted with space-type equipment utilize a built-in radar targeting system while those in standard land-type trappings are fitted with an optical sensor. A hard-hitting bazooka can be equipped for destroying well-protected targets and fixed installations. To attack enemy mobile suits and other assets at long range, or where maximum penetration is required, the Leo may also have a powerful dobergun mounted to its shoulder. Considered the weapon of experts among Alliance pilots, the dobergun has a fairly slow rate of fire but offers great accuracy and destructive power, although its considerable recoil usually requires the Leo to be stationary to fire. For pilots who prefer close combat (unusual among Alliance officers), the Leo may also be fitted with a shoulder shield containing a pair of beam sabers - this configuration is usually matched with a compact beam pistol more suitable for short-range encounters. Finally, Leos used by squad leaders are typically modified by the addition of a pair of short beam cannons on their shoulders, allowing for a very powerful attack against enemy units at closer range.

In Alliance service, the Leo was slowly replaced in frontline combat by the much more advanced Taurus, and then finally by the unmanned Virgo mobile doll by UC 218. When the Alliance's Skyline Network inadvertantly caused all its mobile dolls to malfunction, Leos were rapidly called back into action to fight a resurgent Guild throughout UC 220, but this "last hurrah" was fairly short-lived as the desperate Alliance agreed to adopt the Human Reform League's GN technology later that year. This act, which paved the way for the formation of the Earth Union, would effectively result in the decommissioning of most of the Alliance's natively-developed mobile suits. Leos were officially withdrawn from all front-line units in UC 224, however a limited number were retained for use by reserve forces and local militia units throughout the Earth Union. Through a variety of means, many Leos also ended up on the "black market" of defense technology in the mid-220s, and can still be found in the service of private security forces and irregular paramilitary outfits to the present day.
