Technical and Historical Notes |
As the major world powers waned in the late 210s, private businesses and other regional firms began to step into the political vacuum, often to continue the exploitation of natural resources. One such industrial conglomerate, the Egypt-based Bar-Kemal Limited, added mobile suits to its manufacturing retinue at this time. The WMS-03 Maganac series formed the base of this new privately-constructed mobile suit line.
Built in tandem with the standard model, the Maganac Olifant was designed as a high-speed support unit for Maganac mobile suits in the field. Considered a mobile armor by Bar-Kemal, the Olifant is built with a number of the same parts as the standard Maganacs, allowing for relatively streamlined production. The Olifant more closely resembles a tank than a mobile suit - its main body is able to rotate on the vertical axis, and the two-man crew enables it to easily shoot while on the move. The large "legs" of the machine each house a powerful nuclear jet engine, allowing it to hover over relatively flat ground at speeds exceeding a normal mobile suit's maximum running velocity.
The Olifant's weaponry are all internally-mounted, lacking arms or hands with which to use normal Maganac weaponry. The primary weapon is a long-barreled beam cannon, which is aimed by rotating the Olifant's main body. It possesses a higher output and greater range than the Maganac's beam rifle, allowing an Olifant to act as a fire support unit for squads of Maganacs. A large-caliber vulcan gun is mounted in a separate turret, allowing the Olifant to engage two enemies simultaneously as well as providing for local defense against enemy mobile suits attempting to engage it in melee combat.
Being relatively inexpensive, the Maganac Olifant is perhaps the most popular of the Bar-Kemal mobile weapons that are used by armed militias and other "outlaw" organizations. Although it is intended to act as a support unit for mobile suits, the Olifant's good speed and respectable firepower have given instances of gangs of brigands armed entirely with the machines, which are able to quickly appear and disappear from combat - a desireable trait for those conducting criminal activity.
