Technical and Historical Notes |
As the major world powers waned in the late 210s, private businesses and other regional firms began to step into the political vacuum, often to continue the exploitation of natural resources. One such industrial conglomerate, the Egypt-based Bar-Kemal Limited, added mobile suits to its manufacturing retinue at this time. The WMS-03 Maganac series formed the base of this new privately-constructed mobile suit line.
Along with the standard models, the Maganac Saladin was produced for use by field officers and other "persons-in-charge" of Maganac forces. Sporting a white crest on its head to identify it as a commander's unit, the Maganac Saladin is named after the historical conquerer in a rather 'nationalistic' maneuver by Bar-Kemal. Its body construction is notably more rigid and sturdy than the standard Maganac, offering greater armor protection albeit not to the same level as the later Reinforced Maganac. A set of vulcan guns are mounted in the Saladin's head, which has been reshaped into a more regal appearance, and a very large heat sword modelled after the ancient Egyptian khopesh was provided in lieu of the standard axe-like weapon, furthering the implied comparison to a battlefield leader. The Saladin is able to make use of all other standard Maganac handheld weapons.
Though possessing marginally higher performance than most other Maganac units, the Saladin is only used commonly by Bar-Kemal's security forces and those of other "legitimate" authorities - only the boldest criminal and anarchist elements make use of the commander's units, as implicating the ringleader of a given group is usually frowned upon in the underworld.
