Technical and Historical Notes |
As the major world powers waned in the late 210s, private businesses and other regional firms began to step into the political vacuum, often to continue the exploitation of natural resources. One such industrial conglomerate, the Egypt-based Bar-Kemal Limited, added mobile suits to its manufacturing retinue at this time. The WMS-03 Maganac series formed the base of this new privately-constructed mobile suit line.
The Maganac is a sound general-purpose mobile suit, with a variety of optimizations for combat in desert areas. A notably "rounded" appearance is designed to provide minimal wind resistance - a boon during a sandstorm - while an electromagnetic static generator prevents dust or sand from sticking to the mobile suit's exterior. A battery of radiators installed beneath the mobile suit's skirts and shoulders aids in cooling of its internal systems. As it is intended to have a high degree of economy, the Maganac uses a fission-type nuclear reactor similar to those used on wartime ZAFT mobile suits. This provides for excellent long-range endurance as well as allowing for protracted periods away from depot repairs, traits which have proven invaluable with the Maganac's primary operators.
In spite of its relatively short stature, the Maganac is well armed, including a faculty for beam weapons. It is primarily intended to be equipped with a rather standard 100mm machine gun and a large ablative-coated shield, but it can also equip a reloadable beam rifle for extra firepower. The Maganac can also be configured as a light artillery mobile suit by the addition of an arm-mounted ballistic cannon. To save cost, the Maganac is not equipped with any beam-based melee weapons, instead opting for a simple but effective (and quite large) superheated axe.
Maganacs are widely operated by Bar-Kemal's security forces at its mining and extraction facilites, but are also extremely common on the so-called "black market", leading some to question exactly how Bar-Kemal seems to lose so many of its machines. Rebel and terrorist forces in sub-Saharan Africa and renegades in south-central Asia commonly operate the trusty mobile suit, while a variety of anti-Earth Union anarchists in the Americas began utilizing them by the mid-230s, leading to ecletic combinations of Maganac variants and wartime Leos and Tierens showing up in conflict zones around the world.
