Development of military weapon systems by the Jupiter Development Group began in the late UC 210s amid the Guild War on Earth, when the company feared that after dismantling the remaining planetary governments the terrorist organization would be setting its sights on the rest of the solar system. Ships of the Repulse-class were built explicitly for this coming conflict, to "repulse" Guild attacks on the company's Jovian holdings. The war never occurred, and although the Guild collapsed before the design of the ships was completed, JDG opted to finish the process and begin production alongside their new mobile suits to form the Main Force Patrol. Given Jupiter's position far from the Earth sphere, with the likelihood of any outside help virtually nil, the company began actively fielding its own military for defense and security purposes.
The Repulse is a highly advanced combat ship, with a number of appealing features intended to maximize its capability, given that the company was only capable of fielding a limited number of them due to manpower limitations. As a result, the ship is relatively large compared to its intended combat role. Ships of the Repulse-class are intended to be able to operate for long periods away from a base at a time, and be able to facilitate an unassisted atmospheric re-entry with a highly efficient lifting body design. Trips to Earth and back are possible via the attachment of a large interplanetary booster unit, which can be configured with multiple modular fuel tanks for longer or shorter routes as well as to return to Jupiter again without refueling during the stopover. The booster includes a separate cargo module, allowing a Repulse to serve as a transport for gasses and minerals that have been collected by the company's mining facilities. Jet engines in the rear portion of the ship, combined with a well designed aerodynamic body, permit sustained flight in atmosphere, and it can natively land on a body of water safely. The vessel is quite fast for its size, although at combat speeds its handling is more akin to a 400-plus meter battleship than a nimble destroyer.
As a combat ship, the Repulse is well armed. A positron blaster, manufactured under license from PLANT, is mounted in the forward hull. This weapon serves a utility role in terms of being able to clear large asteroids and other debris out of the path of JDG convoys, as well as making quick "surface excavations" for company mining and surveying groups. Missile launchers are mounted near the bow, while a large battery of vulcan guns occupy the rear maneuvering outriggers for defense against enemy ordnance and mobile suits. There is a roomy hangar in the midships section, with catapults positioned on the dorsal and ventral surface and a recovery ramp at the rear. The ventral hangar doors may be opened while the ship is on a body of water without flooding the hangar, permitting the launch of amphibious mobile suits too.
