Technical and Historical Notes

The Tieren (鐵人 - "Iron Man") is one of the first mobile suits designed since the end of the Interregnum, and its existence as the result of relatively primitive machine shops formally building tanks is blatantly obvious. With the formation of the Human Reform League, the Tieren was swiftly adopted as the League's standard mobile suit out of interest towards simplicity and availability. With the formation of the Earth Union in UC 221, the Human Reform League began removing Tierens from service as part of the military standardization around GN-powered mobile suits. Although no longer used by the Earth Union, the sheer numbers of Tierens produced resulted in many finding their way into private hands where they can still be found in operation today.

The Tieren Antiaircraft Type represents the Human Reform League's general attitude towards its lack of air dominance capability. By adding a quartet of powerful, rapid-firing 155mm cannons to the Tieren's head region, the mobile suit has more or less become a walking gun turret that tags along with League mobile suit formations to protect against air attacks. Bulky but effective radar and thermal imaging apparatuses on the back of the Tieren's new, oversized head enable it to scan large volumes of sky to detect flying targets of all descriptions, though it can also be used against grounded enemies at a somewhat shorter range. Almost two-dozen smoke dischargers mounted all over the Tieren's body allow it to conceal both itself and other Tierens it might be protecting, providing a screen against attacks while the Tierens inside can retaliate through their infrared scanning apparatuses. By slightly reducing the Antiaircraft Type's overall armor protection, it is also no less mobile than the normal Tieren, allowing it to easily keep pace with columns of mobile suits and participate in mobility-intensive battles.

Aside from their use in perforating aerial targets, the Antiaircraft Type's quad 155mm guns can also be used to mow down enemy units at ground level, where the exploding antitiarcraft shells can also handily shred most mobile suits that aren't armored as well as it is. Four disposable missile launchers can be fixed to the Tieren's shoulders to increase its engagement range and ability to hit fast-moving or high-flying enemies; these can be ejected once depleted to reduce weight. Aside from the standard Tieren's chest-mounted machine gun, the Antiaircraft Type may also equip a nasty air-cooled 60mm Gatling cannon mounting an integrated carbon blade to further increase its screening capabilities against enemy assets that move quickly. The Antiaircraft Type can in theory mount other Tieren weapons, but in practice rarely does so.
