Technical and Historical Notes |
The Tieren is one of the first mobile suits designed since the end of the Interregnum, and its existence as the result of relatively primitive machine shops formally building tanks is blatantly obvious. With the formation of the Human Reform League, the Tieren was swiftly adopted as the League's standard mobile suit out of interest towards simplicity and availability. With the formation of the Earth Union in UC 221, the Human Reform League began removing Tierens from service as part of the military standardization around GN-powered mobile suits. Although no longer used by the Earth Union, the sheer numbers of Tierens produced resulted in many finding their way into private hands where they can still be found in operation today.
To better negotiate well dug-in enemy positions, the League set about creating a specialized Tieren variant for cracking open very well protected targets. The resulting modification, the Tieren Cannon Type, or simply "Tieren Cannon" for short, has effectively produced a gigantic waddling piece of artillery. The Cannon's head is entirely nonexistent, with a pair of mono-eyes on stalk-like portuberances sticking out from the extended two-man cockpit area. In its place, a behemoth 300mm artillery cannon on a hydraulic recoil dampener juts out above the Tieren's shoulders. A large spike on the Tieren's back side enables the mobile suit to brace into the ground and withstand the enormous recoil forces and make for a more accurate firing position, and the Cannon Type more closely resembles a squatting tripod when preparing to fire its main weapon. The entire cannon assembly travels backwards during recoil, helping to dissipate some of the force as well as jettisoning a log-sized shell casing. The weight of the cannon itself, as well as the additional stabilizers and armor protection, has made the Cannon Type even more unweildy than the normal Tieren, and it is useful for little other than long range bombardment or direct line-of-sight attacks against enemy mobile suits.
Due to modifications for the main weapon and as a general weight-saving measure, the Tieren Cannon is not compatible with most Tieren handheld weapons. A second mounted machine gun is positioned in the right torso for local defense, but it is otherwise unarmed and reliant on other Tierens for protection should an enemy be able to close the distance with it. Its armor protection is improved to better deal with the possibility of enemy counterbattery fire.
