Technical and Historical Notes |
The Tieren (鐵人 - "Iron Man") is one of the first mobile suits designed since the end of the Interregnum, and its existence as the result of relatively primitive machine shops formally building tanks is blatantly obvious. With the formation of the Human Reform League, the Tieren was swiftly adopted as the League's standard mobile suit out of interest towards simplicity and availability. With the formation of the Earth Union in UC 221, the Human Reform League began removing Tierens from service as part of the military standardization around GN-powered mobile suits. Although no longer used by the Earth Union, the sheer numbers of Tierens produced resulted in many finding their way into private hands where they can still be found in operation today.
The MSJ-06II-C Tieren High Mobility Type is the Human Reform League's direct answer to the deployment of mobile suits by the other major Earth governments, be they repurposed Old Earth Federation designs or entirely new models. The basic Tieren is a formidable opponent, but it suffers from the ability to be easily outmaneuvered due to its plodding gait and slow response times. By reducing some armor protection and outfitting the Tieren with powerful jet engines in its legs, many of the original shortcomings have been addressed. Unlike the Tieren Flight Type, the High Mobility variation cannot use its thrust for any kind of sustained flight, but it is capable of hovering above relatively flat ground and travelling at high speed by shifting its center of mass in the direction it wants to move. This has resulted in a slight decrease in durability, but most League pilots believe the greatly enhanced maneuverability more than offsets this drawback on the already extrordinarily sturdy Tieren. Particularly rough terrain can't be safely travelled over without the risk of the High Mobility Type toppling over, but it is just as capable of marching along at the regular Tieren's "slow and steady" pace. A version for unit commanders (MSJ-06II-C/T) is denoted with a boxy head and additional sensors and antennas on its shoulders to keep in contact with forces spread out over a large area. Because the High Mobility Type was often deployed in quantity over the vast expanses of desert and steppe in Asia, it was also fitted with improved dust filters and "weatherproofing" materials were installed over the mobile suit's joints to improve their endurance in harsh environments.
The High Mobility Type is armed in much the same way as the original model, including a 200mm machine cannon and a powerful 550mm bazooka. For its role as an assault unit, the Tieren's machine cannon was overhauled into a long-barreled model, providing it with greater hitting power as well as improving accuracy. The antipersonnel machine gun was discarded in favor of an integrated carbon blade down the length of the barrel, allowing the cannon to be used as a handy melee weapon, creating the possibility of making nasty joust-like passes against enemy mobile suits.
