Technical and Historical Notes |
The Tieren (鐵人 - "Iron Man") is one of the first mobile suits designed since the end of the Interregnum, and its existence as the result of relatively primitive machine shops formally building tanks is blatantly obvious. With the formation of the Human Reform League, the Tieren was swiftly adopted as the League's standard mobile suit out of interest towards simplicity and availability. With the formation of the Earth Union in UC 221, the Human Reform League began removing Tierens from service as part of the military standardization around GN-powered mobile suits. Although no longer used by the Earth Union, the sheer numbers of Tierens produced resulted in many finding their way into private hands where they can still be found in operation today.
The MSJ-06II-E Tieren Space Type was developed in a rush program by the Human Reform League to facilitate the creation of the People's Space Forces. Already not known for its agility, the Tieren is even more immobile compared to most mobile suits fielded by other space militaries at the time. While incorporating some features from the League's early Xiaoshou mobile armor, the Tieren Space Type is little more than a standard Tieren modified for operations in zero gravity. The cockpit is not fully pressurized, requiring pilots to wear a bulky pressure suit at all times, while the mobile suit provides a steay supply of oxygen via an attached umbilical cable. Seven large thrusters are positioned in the mobile suit's backpack, shoulders, and legs for mobility, while smaller apogee motors are placed in the torso and hips for attitude control and to assist in turning - the Tieren has an extremely primitive AMBAC system, relying more on thruster power for turning and maneuvering than most other mobile suits. Curiously, League engineers opted for an unorthodox but effective system of using pressurized water instead of chemical fuel, with the Tieren simply jettisoning high-pressure water jets to adjust its bearing. Two large "DHM tanks" are mounted in the mobile suit's legs (the name is derived from "dihydrogen monoxide" and was used derisively by League crews), and can be jettisoned once empty to save weight. The highly pressurized canisters are extremely rigid and can substitute for the standard Tieren's heavy shield in some respects. The Space Type also includes some modest systems upgrades, with improved sensor and communications ranges. These tweaks included a highly sought-after feature whose lack has plagued Tieren pilots since the mobile suit's inception: collision warning sensors and helmet indicators.
Compared to the standard Tieren, the Space Type is armed in much the same way, although it also features a number of other specialized equipments for use in zero-gravity combat. The standard 200mm machine cannon is modified with two large carbon blades mounted along the barrel - although they make an effective if crude melee weapon, their primary purpose is to act as heat sinks to prevent barrel overheating. The Space Type's cannon is usually loaded with either explosive or shot rounds - ammunition of this type was rejected for use on Earth due to aerodynamic resistance reducing effective range, but in space this is obviously a non-problem. Along with gel packs, the Space Type may be armed with a carbon net launcher to entangle enemy mobile suits, and a carbon wire launcher with built-in winch for use in grappling or materials retrieval. While unusual and requiring some skill to employ, the Space Type's various means of restricting the mobility of enemy mobile suits does help offset its own lack of agility.
