Technical and Historical Notes |
The Tieren (鐵人 - "Iron Man") is one of the first mobile suits designed since the end of the Interregnum, and its existence as the result of relatively primitive machine shops formally building tanks is blatantly obvious. With the formation of the Human Reform League, the Tieren was swiftly adopted as the League's standard mobile suit out of interest towards simplicity and availability. With the formation of the Earth Union in UC 221, the Human Reform League began removing Tierens from service as part of the military standardization around GN-powered mobile suits. Although no longer used by the Earth Union, the sheer numbers of Tierens produced resulted in many finding their way into private hands where they can still be found in operation today.
The MSJ-06II-A Tieren is renowned among the major Earth governments for its sheer "clunkiness" as well as its effectiveness in combat in spite of the "simplistically rugged" nautre of its hardware. Casual observation of the Tieren's features reveals more in common with a tank than a mobile suit, and the comparison is not entirely inapt. The Tieren's cockpit more closely resembles the cabin of a tank, and is somewhat claustrophobic with its small space and narrow vision slits in place of more typical camera monitors. The pilot is provided with an interface visor in his helmet that connects via cable to the Tieren's systems, providing both an external view (with motion control linked to the Tieren's mono-eye) as well as a heads-up display, ammunition indicators, and other features normally expected to be found on a mobile suit's monitor. The Tieren's incredible weight, easily double any other typical mobile suit's, is due to the monstrously thick steel armor plating that belies the simplicity used in the mobile suit's construction. It is nearly immune to machine guns of all sorts and very resistant against missiles and other explosives, but offers little protection from beam weapons due to its homogenous composition and (relatively) low melting point. Aside from very thick armor protection, the Tieren is also mechanically quite robust, and in many cases can continue functioning with missing limbs or holes blasted straight through nonvital areas of its body. Spartan and rugged, the Tieren could be compared to an AK-47: more modern and higher-performing models exist, but the Tieren's operators swear by its reliability and ease of use, with almost all Tierens still in use today being originally constructed at least thirty years prior.
Being powered by a hot-burning nuclear reactor (and constantly venting radioactive exhaust), the Tieren is incapable of utilizing beam weapons on its own. However, it is still easily one of the most heavily armed mobile suits currently in production. For most combat operations, it is provided with a very powerful 200mm smoothbore machine cannon easily capable of decimating the armor protection used on many mobile suits. It is relatively accurate when fired semiautomatically, allowing the Tieren to engage targets at a not insignificant distance. A massive 550mm bazooka may be equipped instead for blasting apart well protected targets, while a somewhat more curious gel pack launcher can be installed on the opposite arm - the special projectiles disperse a binary chemical gel that hardens on impact with a target, which can be useful in restricting the mobility of enemy mobile suits. A 30mm machine gun is positioned in the torso for local defense against missiles and for close-range attacks, and two fifty-calibers are furnished to attack infantry and thin-skinned targets. The Tieren is provided with a simple melee weapon in the form of a high-strength carbon blade that is usually attached to the Tieren's back, allowing it to add a sharp edge to the mobile suit's incredible physical strength. It is something of an afterthought, given the Tieren's ability to physically dismantle many lesser machines through sheer force alone.
