Technical and Historical Notes |
At the founding of the Earth Sphere Alliance, a coalition of most of the economically powerful states of Europe and North America, mobile suit technology was only recently being rediscovered after the catastrophic events of the Interregnum. The Alliance's basic Leo mobile suit was employed with much success in unifying more rebellious areas, but after the founding of the Human Reform League and their own deployment of the primitive yet highly effective Tieren, the Alliance quickly began developing new mobile suits to counter this threat. Both sharing the same base model number, the Aries was developed for aerial combat, and the Tragos for land battles.
Compared to the Leo, the Tragos sports much improved armor protection with a relatively bulky and boxy frame. While still not on the same level as the incredibly durable Tieren, the Tragos can absorb much more punishment than any of its Alliance contemporaries. As it is specifically designed for land combat, it also features a variety of equipment and systems built for surface battles. The most important of these is its hover system, an add-on "skirt" that encloses the Tragos' lower body. The skirt utilizes onboard turbines to create an air cushion below it, allowing the Tragos to move over relatively smooth ground very quickly, and in essentially any direction. This also offers the mobile suit a limited amphibious capability, but this is considered an ancillary ability for the most part.
The Tragos is well armed, although not to the same level of versatility as the Leo. Most prominently featured are the pair of doberguns attached to its shoulders, allowing the Tragos to deliver a major whallop. In the hover configuration, this gives the mobile suit a distinctly tank-like appearance, while the horn-like imagery also contributed somewhat to its naming from the Greek term for goat. In addition to the artillery, the Tragos can also arm a handheld beam rifle or machine gun, giving it a reasonable degree of flexibility with regards to engaging the enemy. As it is intended primarily for support purposes, as well as a side-effect of the general Alliance military preferences of the period, the Tragos is not provided with any melee weapons, instead relying on its superior mobility to avoid the enemies in close combat, or for protection from other mobile suits.
Compared to many of the Alliance's other designs, the Tragos had a somewhat shorter lifespan in operational service. While an excellent support unit, the limitations of its design could prove devastating if a battle's tactical situation changed suddenly. As a result, the Tragos was retired from Alliance service near the high point of the mobile doll's usage, and thus was not among the many units recalled to fight the Guild after the catastrophe in UC 220. Many have appeared in the hands of security organizations and regional militias in the post-Guild period, where the Tragos' good combination of mobility, armor protection, and firepower make it a very cost-efficient unit.
