Technical and Historical Notes

With the success of its first indigenous mobile suit series, the Europe-based defense firm Dahlgren Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (Dahlgren Weapons and Munitions Factories) continued development of weapons technology through most of the 230s. DWM's most capable mobile suit, the DWM-03MS Huckebein, was produced during this period, and was recognized by most analysts as a genuine Gundam-caliber weapon with excellent characteristics in all areas. The model's steep price ultimately resulted in poor sales, leading DWM to begin consideration of ways to apply technology developed as part of the Huckebein's design towards more profitable products.

The DWM-05MS Wildschwein ("Wild Boar") is something of a hybrid between Gespenst and Huckebein mobile suits, sharing features from both designs while bringing forth a few unique features of its own. The Wildschwein is based off of the older Gespenst's frame and uses the same nuclear reactor, cockpit, and a number of other systems in order to streamline production and economize what new developments have been made. The power systems, sensors, and jet/rocket thrusters are derived from the Huckebein's, however, resulting in a not-insignificant increase in maneuverability and combat prowess over the Gespenst, with a Gundam-like head design to emphasize the correlation. Like the Huckebein, the Wildschwein is capable of atmospheric flight with good handling, although it is limited by rapid fuel consumption when operating in this role.

As it is derived from the Gespenst, the Wildschwein is capable of utilizing most of that mobile suit's handheld weapon systems, and includes a beam saber in the right wrist for hand-to-hand combat. Furthermore, it is also armed with two entirely new weapons, the M19 long beam rifle and 'Circle Cutter' beam device. The M19 is a fairly conventional beam rifle fitted with a long barrel and advanced targeting optics, allowing significantly greater range of accurate fire over the earlier M89 used by the Gespenst. Furthermore, it utilizes a similar energy pack arrangement to the Huckebein's M99, allowing the weapon to be reloaded quickly in the field. The 'Circle Cutter' is by far the more interesting equipment. It is mounted on the Wildschwein's left arm in place of the Gespenst's 'Jet Magnum' plasma stake, and is composed of a series of beam emitters arranged in a circular pattern. The 'Circle Cutter' can be used both offensively and defensively. It creates a large and potent slashing or cutting weapon with great versatility, allowing the Wildschwein to swing, thrust, chop, and perform a variety of other combat maneuvers that a standard beam saber could not be expected to. At the same time, a central emitter can instead create a small but highly effective beam shield instead, which can be used to completely block mobile suit-portable beam rifles. Its coverage is somewhat limited, however, and the 'Circle Cutter' does require some skill to employ properly (e.g. not accidentally chopping the mobile suit's own leg off with a badly-aimed swipe).

Limited production of the Wildschwein began in the spring of UC 241, and although sales have been made to various parties it is unknown whether or not any Wildschweins have actually been used in combat yet.
