Spells

This page details spells common to Ourissa. It is by no means a complete list of spells, new spells being invented and old spells being forgotten year by year. Basic Magic These spells are known by every mage in Nimrodel, the absolute simplest of magical tricks. They are the first spells anyone will learn, and many professions that do not formally train in the magical arts will stumble across these abilities anyway. The Basic Spellcasting skill teaches Cantrip, Magic Missile and Detect Magic, while Dispel is learned seperately. Cantrip • Elemental • Non-Combat The Mage creates a very minor object of ether, often for a parlor trick or to amaze a peasant, but of no real consequence. Perhaps it is used to spark firewood as a stand in for flint, or to make a wilted flower stand vibrant for a while, to make a glass of water swirl or bubble unnaturally, or a gust of wind knock off a mans hat. Cantrip can be used in many ways, but they are all minor and more visual than effective. Cantrip is the only spell which does not belong to a single school, but rather all four elemental schools at once. Magic Missile • Shamanism • Offensive The Mage forms a ball of pure ether in his hand, transporting it to the material plane and flinging it like a Javelin. The ball of ether hits its target as a blunt, concussive force, knocking them back. This is the simplest and weakest of offensive spells, but is quick and easy to cast. Detect Magic • Necromancy • Buff The Mage learns to see ether with their minds eye. This spell is always active, and is what allows a Mage to detect the flows of ether. It will allow the Mage to know when an object or a creature is magical, though not necessarily what the enchantment is. It will also allow the Mage to see otherwise invisible Shamanism spells and elemental creatures. Dispel • Shamanism • Defensive The Mage can disrupt the flow of ether, interrupting another Mages spell. This can be done both before and after a spell is cast, though disrupting a spell that has already been completed is much more difficult. Fire Magic Level 1 Fire Bolt • Offensive • Darts of flame appear in the air above and around the target, shooting towards it and striking it. The stronger the Mage, the more darts created. Flame Touch • Offensive • The Mage places his hand on the target, infusing the area with flame ether and causing severe burns. Flame Lash • Offensive • The Mage disrupts the ether of a fire elemental. This spell causes a great amount of damage, but can only be used on magical targets. Flame Strike • Offensive • The Mage temporarily enchants an allies weapon, their next strike releasing a powerful explosion of fire ether. Firebird • Offensive • The Mage creates a small bird of ether flame, which launches towards the target, exploding on impact. Though it strikes with less force than other spells, the firebird will move intelligently, turning corners and avoiding shields, making sure to strike its target true. Fireball • Offensive • The Mage creates a ball of flame in his hand and throws it like a grenade, the ball exploding on impact. This attack does not guide itself like a Firebird, but strikes with greater force. Forgers Gift • Offensive • A metal sidearm or shield belonging to one of the Mages enemies suddenly becomes red hot, forcing them to cast it aside or be burned. This spell cannot affect items too large to easily be cast away, such as plate armor, unless the Mage has fire Mastery or Grand Mastery. Fire Ward • Defensive • An antimagic Ward is placed around the individual, granting them resistance to Fire spells. Resist Flame • Defensive • The Mage grants a party member with a moderate resistance to natural flame. Dispel Fire • Defensive • The Mage learns how to dispel Fire magic with greater proficiency. Sear Arrow • Defensive • The Mage causes arrows in the sky to light aflame, their shaft and fletching disintigrating almost immediately. The remaining point will be wildly innacurate, thudding to the ground. Smoke • Defensive • The Mage absorbs the energy of a natural or magical fire nearby, transforming it into a sudden billowing cloud of ash. The ash dissipates after a short period, but while the cloud remains it is very difficult to see through. Summon Fire Wisp • Summoning • The Mage summons a glowing and partially intelligent ball of fire ether. The wisp flits around, but never strays too far from the party. The wisps ether can be absorbed to cast a fire spell in an emergency, or can be instructed to attack a fire spell cast at the party, neutralizing it. Summon Fire Host • Summoning • The Mage summons a spirit that resides inside a body of natural fire. The fire will suddenly become much larger, moving and dancing as if it were alive, possibly jumping at enemies or relighting itself if put out. Summon Candle • Summoning • The Mage summons a minor flame spirit known as a Candle. The Candle is a benevolent spirit which will travel along with the party and light their path. Thought not nearly as bright as a Torch, candles are highly intelligent, and will often help the party in any way they can. Instill Fire • Buff • The Mage instills a party member with Fire ether, granting them +1 AGI temporarily. Endow Flame • Buff • The Mage instills temporarily endows a party members equipment with fire ether, causing armor to become magic resistant and weapons to glow with energy, harming magical targets. Absorb Fire • Buff • The Mage drains the energy of a natural fire source, using it to power a fire spell. Ari's Blessing • Buff • The Mage chants a blessing to the sun god before casting a fire spell. His next fire spell cast will use a white flame that ignores any resistance to fire magic. This spell can only be cast once per day. Heat • Buff • The Mage instills a magical heat in the target, protecting it from the chills of nature. This spell also protects against and counteracts certain Water spells such as Chill. Drain Fire • Debuff • The Mage drains a party member of Fire ether, temporarily reducing their AGI by 1. Anaerobia • Debuff • The Mage drains the energy from the targets muscles, causing them to ache whenever they move too much. Detect Fire Magic • Non Combat • The Mage becomes more proficient at detecting Fire enchantments and spells. Message in the Flame • Non Combat • The Mage sends a spoken message through a natural fire, speaking to allies at great distances. Conjure Fire • Non Combat • The Mage conjures a natural fire from nothingness, keeping the party warm. Fire Cantrip • Non Combat • The Mage learns to use fire elemental Cantrips to a more powerful effect. Torch • Non-Combat • The Mage creates a natural light source that floats above his shoulder, as bright as any torch. Renew Fire • Healing • The Mage reinvigorates the ether of a summoned fire elemental or beast, healing it for 5 HP. This spell can only be used once per day. Sugarfire • Healing • The Mage gives a temporary boost of energy to a companion. This spell temporarily heals a target for 5 HP, which can for example allow them to fight at a higher stat level. This spell can only be cast once per day. Level 2 Searing Flash • Offensive • The Mage creates a tiny ball of condensed fire ether, which combusts in an unnaturally bright light. The light causes minor burns to anyone within 5 feet, and temporarily blinds everyone within 50 feet who does not avert their gaze. Flame Trap • Offensive • The Mage creates a pocket of ether that is invisible to the naked eye, but erupts in a fireball when it detects someone coming close. Without being triggered, the trap will remain for one day, or until the Mage moves more than one mile from its location. The Mage can maintain one active Flame trap at a time per level of proficiency. Summon Flame Imp • Summoning • The Mage summons a small red sentient imp, one of the weakest of elementals. The Imp has almost no physical power, but can cast level 1 spells of its element. This spell can only be cast once per day. Summon Flame Hound • Summoning • The Mage summons a fiery hound, which attacks the summoners enemies with the ferocity of any warhound. This spell can only be cast once per day. Preserve Flame • Buff • This spell is always in effect. It allows the Mage to cast a single level 1 Fire spell instantly, with no preparation. The effects of this spell can only be used once per day. Flame Ritual • Buff • The Ritual takes time and concentration to perform, but once completed, concentrates fire ether into the area, making spellcasting ether. Rituals are commonly used before casting more powerful spells. Fire Speech • Non Combat • The Mage learns to speak with natural fires, learning their secrets and their wisdom. Visions in the Flame • Non Combat • The Mage can see through the eyes of a natural fire, spying on friends and enemies. Level 3 Combustion Arc • Defensive • This spell can only be cast on the Mage, his Familiar, or his summoned Elemental. The target explodes in a moderately sized fireball, immediately teleporting to the source of any magical or natural flame within 100 feet. The flame used for the teleportation portion of the spell is consumed to recreate the Mages body. Combustion Arc can only be cast once per target per hour. Summon Fire Beast • Summoning • The Mage summons a fire red, bear sized beast, partially intelligent but very powerful. It has the strength of a basilisk, and can cast level 1 spells. This spell can only be cast once per day. Enhance Flame • Buff • The Mage uses a heavy chunk of ether to cast any of his fire spells in the normal way, except with double the power and effect. This ability can only be used once per day. Level 4 Molten Rain • Offensive • The Mage looks to the sky, forming black clouds of ash and soot from the ether wind that coalesce into red hot balls of rock, tar and pitch. These fireballs begin to fall from the sky like rain, melting iron armor and flaying men alive. Once cast, it will take time for the cloud to form and begin raining down upon the Mages enemies, but the molten rain will be particularly devastating, able to destroy entire detachments of formed troops very quickly. Molten Rain can only be cast once per day. Level 5 Human Kindling • Offensive • The Mage turns his gaze to an enemy, who immediately combusts, the heat of his body turned to magical flame. This will instantly kill any target who is not magically shielded or resistant. The ether released from the flaming body can then be used to instantly cast any of the Mages fire summoning spells, a souls ether highly attuned to summoning sentient beasts. Summons cast with this ability are instant, require no preparation, and can be used regardless of a once per day requirement that was already met. Human Kindling can only be cast once per day. Water Magic Level 1 Ice Bolt • Offensive • Darts of sharp ice appear in the air above and around the target, shooting towards it and striking it. The stronger the Mage, the more darts created. Frost Touch • Offensive The Mage places his hand on the target, infusing the area with water ether and freezing the area. Frost Lash • Offensive • The Mage disrupts the ether of a water elemental. This spell causes a great amount of damage, but can only be used on magical targets. Frost Strike • Offensive • The Mage temporarily enchants an allies weapon, their next strike releasing a powerful shockwave of freezing ether. Hailstone • Offensive • The Mage creates a tough ball of ice in his hand, throwing it with all the force and range of a slingstone. Krakens Dart • Offensive • The Mage gathers a bluegreen watery dart in his hand and throws it. The dart pierces the target, causing magical damage and then poisoning him. The darts poison will make him hallucinate and feel intense fear for a few seconds. Ice Dagger • Offensive • The Mage creates a dagger made of ice. The dagger can be weilded as a melee weapon, using the Mages Dagger proficiency. The craftsmanship level of the dagger is tied to the Mages Water proficiency level. The dagger may be thrown, but shatters on impact. It will melt if anyone but the Mage attempts to weild it. Water Ward • Defensive • An antimagic Ward is placed around the individual, granting them resistance to Water spells. Dispel Water • Defensive • The Mage learns how to dispel Water magic with greater proficiency. Resist Cold • Defensive • The Mage grants a party member with a moderate resistance to natural colds. Douse • Defensive • The Mage suddenly wettens the source of a natural fire, putting it out. Wetten • Defensive • The Mage instills a party member and their equipment with water energy, providing a slight resistance to both natural and magical fire. This spell can affect one party member per level of water proficiency. Mist • Defensive • The Mage thickens the amount of water in the air, creating a field of mist. The mist dissipates quickly, but while it remains it is difficult to see through. Summon Water Wisp • Summoning • The Mage summons a glowing and partially intelligent ball of water ether. The wisp flits around, but never strays too far from the party. The wisps ether can be absorbed to cast a water spell in an emergency, or can be instructed to attack a water spell cast at the party, neutralizing it. Summon Water Host • Summoning • The Mage summons a spirit that resides inside a body of natural water. The water will suddenly ripple and froth, waves splashing at individuals despite a lack of wind. Summon Spirit Fish • Summoning • The Mage summons a fish shaped entity that resides in water ether. The fish cannot do much but swim around, and must be tied to a water source, but is invisible to non-spellcasters, and can be an effective scout for the party should he have a place to swim to. Instill Water • Buff • The Mage instills a party member with Water ether, granting them +1 STR temporarily. Endow Frost • Buff • The Mage instills temporarily endows a party members equipment with water ether, causing armor to become magic resistant and weapons to glow with energy, harming magical targets. Absorb Water • Buff • The Mage drains the energy of a natural water source, using it to power a water spell. Blessing of the Sea • Buff • The Mage enhances a party members ability to swim, the water helping them along. This increases the targets swimming proficincy level by 1 temporarily, but cannot be used on party members who cannot swim. Blessing of the Sea can only affect one person per level of water proficiency. Chill • Debuff • The Mage lowers the temperature of the targets body, slowing their movements and causing them to shiver for a time. Drain Water • Debuff • The Mage drains a party member of Water ether, temporarily reducing their STR by 1. • Buff Sink • This spell is cast on a target who is swimming or floating in water. They will begin to sink, regardless of their weight. Detect Water Magic • Non Combat • The Mage becomes more proficient at detecting Water enchantments and spells. Message in the Water • Non Combat • The Mage sends a spoken message through a natural water source, speaking to allies at great distances. Conjure Water • Non Combat • The Mage conjures natural water from nothingness, nourishing the party. Purify • Non Combat • The Mage alters a water source, removing mud and poisons and making it safe to drink. Water Cantrip • Non Combat • The Mage learns to use water elemental Cantrips to a more powerful effect. Oil Film • Non Combat • The Mage forms a small film of ether around the parties gear, preventing perishable items from getting wet in the rain. Renew Water • Healing • The Mage reinvigorates the ether of a summoned water elemental or beast, healing it for 5 HP. This spell can only be used once per day. Dilute • Healing • The Mage lessens or completely stops the effects of a minor poison. This spell can only be cast once per day. Level 2 Frost Trap • Offensive • The Mage creates a pocket of ether that is invisible to the naked eye, but fires shards of ice when it detects someone coming close. Without being triggered, the trap will remain for one day, or until the Mage moves more than one mile from its location. The Mage can maintain one active Frost trap at a time per level of proficiency. Summon Water Imp • Summoning • The Mage summons a small blue sentient imp, one of the weakest of elementals. The Imp has almost no physical power, but can cast level 1 spells of its element. This spell can only be cast once per day. Summon Water Hound • Summoning • The Mage summons a blue icey hound, which attacks the summoners enemies with the ferocity of any warhound. This spell can only be cast once per day. Water Breathing • Buff • The Mage casts an enchantment over the targets lungs, water magically turning to air as it enters the body. This spell allows the target to breathe water as long as it remains in effect. Preserve Water • Buff • This spell is always in effect. It allows the Mage to cast a single level 1 water spell instantly, with no preparation. The effects of this spell can only be used once per day. Water Ritual • Buff • The Ritual takes time and concentration to perform, but once completed, concentrates water ether into the area, making spellcasting ether. Rituals are commonly used before casting more powerful spells. Water Speech • Non Combat • The Mage learns to speak with natural water sources, learning their secrets and their wisdom. Visions in the Water • Non Combat • The Mage can see through the eyes of a natural water source, spying on friends and enemies. Level 3 Flash Freeze • Offensive • This spell can only be cast on targets partially submerged, or affected by the lvl1 Water spell Chill. The water in and around the target instantly freezes, stopping the target in their tracks. Injury dealt to the target will break the thin layer of ice holding them in place. Summon Frost Beast • Summoning • The Mage summons an ice blue, bear sized beast, partially intelligent but very powerful. It has the strength of a basilisk, and can cast level 1 spells. This spell can only be cast once per day. Enhance Eater • Buff • The Mage uses a heavy chunk of ether to cast any of his water spells in the normal way, except with double the power and effect. This ability can only be used once per day. Level 4 Shatter • Offensive • This spell can only be cast on targets affected by the lvl3 Water spell Flash Freeze. The frozen target turns completely to ice, shattering seconds later. This spell will instantly kill any target who is not magically shielded or resistant. Shatter can only be cast once per day. Level 5 Transform Atmosphere • Defensive/Offensive • The Mage transforms air into water around him, creating a bubble where a terrestrial environment suddenly becomes an underwater environment. The spell will remain in effect until the Mage chooses to end it or leaves the area, in which case the water will turn back to air harmlessly. If Transform Atmosphere is dispelled, the enchantment holding the water bubble in place will be destroyed, but the water will remain in the material plane, flowing into the surrounding land like a tidal wave. The Mage may dispel his own spell to achieve this affect. While the water bubble remains, individuals swim and breathe water within it, just as if the area was transported to the bottom of the ocean. Transform Atmosphere can only be cast once per day. Earth Magic Level 1 Poison Bolt • Offensive • Darts of green energy appear in the air above and around the target, shooting towards it and striking it. The darts inflict various minor poison effects on the target if they pierce open skin. The stronger the Mage, the more darts created. Earthen Touch • Offensive • The Mage infuses his hand with earth ether and makes a fist. His fist is temporarily as hard as stone, and strikes as hard as any mace. Earth Lash • Offensive • The Mage disrupts the ether of a earth elemental. This spell causes a great amount of damage, but can only be used on magical targets. Poison Strike • Offensive • The Mage temporarily enchants an allies weapon, their next strike enchanted with a magical poison. Javelin • Offensive • The Mage creates a pointed spear of wood that can be stabbed, thrown, or enchanted with other spells such as Poison Strike. One minute after leaving the casters hand, the Javelin dissipates. Earthen Ward • Defensive • An antimagic Ward is placed around the individual, granting them resistance to Earth spells. Dispel Earth • Defensive • The Mage learns how to dispel Earth magic with greater proficiency. Resist Poison • Defensive • The Mage grants a party member with a moderate resistance to natural poisons. Stoneskin • Defensive • The Mage temporarily hardenes a persons skin, giving them a natural protection equivalent to leather armor. This spell only affects a targets skin, not any outward armor they may be wearing. Summon Earth Wisp • Summoning • The Mage summons a glowing and partially intelligent ball of earth ether. The wisp flits around, but never strays too far from the party. The wisps ether can be absorbed to cast a earth spell in an emergency, or can be instructed to attack a earth spell cast at the party, neutralizing it. Summon Nature Host • Summoning • The Mage summons a spirit that resides inside a tree. The tree will creak and groan, roots lifting up to trick individuals and branches moving slightly to block paths. Summon Sprites • Summoning • The Mage summons a number of flying forest sprites, which appear out of trees and plants. These small faeries can be used to scout an enemy position, or tell if someone has recently passed through an area. This spell can only be cast once per day. Call Animals • Summoning • The Mage lets out a wave of earth energy that non-sentient beings are naturally drawn to. This spell will make animals congregate to the area. Birds will sing, squirrels and deer will curiously appear and watch the party. However, this spell merely calls the animals, it provides no power over them. This spell can only be cast once per day. Instill Earth • Buff • The Mage instills a party member with Earth ether, granting them +1 CON temporarily. Endow Stone • Buff • The Mage instills temporarily endows a party members equipment with earth ether, causing armor to become magic resistant and weapons to glow with energy, harming magical targets. Absorb Earth • Buff • The Mage drains the energy of a natural source of plant life, using it to power an earth spell. Monkeys Blessing • Buff • The Mage increases a party members ability to climb trees, knotholes and low hanging branches curiously always available. This spell can affect one target at a time per level of earth proficiency. Drain Earth • Debuff • The Mage drains a party member of Earth ether, temporarily reducing their CON by 1. Forests Humor • Debuff • The target of this spell suddenly finds themselves incapable of finding a proper foothold, and will trip over roots, slip in soft dirt, or any combination of other humorous things. Detect Earth Magic • Non Combat • The Mage becomes more proficient at detecting Earth enchantments and spells. Message in the Trees • Non Combat • The Mage sends a spoken message through a tree or plant, speaking to allies at great distances. Conjure Food • Non Combat • The Mage conjures bread from nothingness, keeping the party fed. Earth Cantrip • Non Combat • The Mage learns to use earth elemental Cantrips to a more powerful effect. Campsite • Non Combat • The Mage learns what a sort of Earth ether is radiated by a good campsite, and will always be able to find a good place to camp, even in bad weather or harsh terrain. Pets Call • Non Combat • The Mage uses ether to transform his words, speaking a message that surrounding animals understand completely. The Mage can selectively make only the parties pets understand the statement if he wishes. Dry'cha's Hammock • Non Combat • The Mage causes the grass, leaves or wood of a nearby tree to become incredibly soft and comfortable, providing a warm sleeping space. He has no need for sleeping bags or tents. Invigorate • Healing • The Mage passively renews the parties energy, ether allowing their wounds to recover more quickly. The Mages natural health regeneration increases by 1, modified as normal. When Resting, this spell benefits the entire party. Renew Earth • Healing • The Mage reinvigorates the ether of a summoned earth elemental or beast, healing it for 5 HP. This spell can only be used once per day. Purge • Healing • The Mage purges the targets body of minor poisons. Level 2 Vine Trap • Offensive • The Mage creates a pocket of ether that is invisible to the naked eye, but turns into magical ensnaring vines when it detects someone coming close. Without being triggered, the trap will remain for one day, or until the Mage moves more than one mile from its location. The Mage can maintain one active Vine trap at a time per level of proficiency. Summon Nature Imp • Summoning • The Mage summons a small green sentient imp, one of the weakest of elementals. The Imp has almost no physical power, but can cast level 1 spells of its element. This spell can only be cast once per day. Summon Nature Hound • Summoning • The Mage summons a hound made of vines and brambles, which attacks the summoners enemies with the ferocity of any warhound. This spell can only be cast once per day. Preserve Earth • Buff • This spell is always in effect. It allows the Mage to cast a single level 1 Earth spell instantly, with no preparation. The effects of this spell can only be used once per day. Earth Ritual • Buff • The Ritual takes time and concentration to perform, but once completed, concentrates earth ether into the area, making spellcasting ether. Rituals are commonly used before casting more powerful spells. Nature Speech • Non Combat • The Mage learns to speak with plant life, learning their secrets and their wisdom. Visions in the Trees • Non Combat • The Mage can see through the eyes of plants, spying on friends and enemies. Natures Path • Non Combat • The Mage communes with the earth, finding or creating pathways for the party to follow. It will be easier for the party to pass through dangerous areas with this skill. Level 3 Summon Nature Beast • Summoning • The Mage summons a deep green, bear sized beast, partially intelligent but very powerful. It has the strength of a basilisk, and can cast level 1 spells. This spell can only be cast once per day. Enhance Earth • Buff • The Mage uses a heavy chunk of ether to cast any of his earth spells in the normal way, except with double the power and effect. This ability can only be used once per day. Ether Regeneration • Healing • The Mage infuses a person with Earth ether, instantly regenerating tissue and healing wounds. This spell immediately restores 10 HP to the target. Ether Regeneration can only be cast once per day. Level 4 Armor of the Dry'cha • Buff • The Mage infuses a persons skin with so much Earth ether that their body becomes incredibly resilient to damage. The characters skin acts as mastercrafted fullplate armor while the enchantment is in effect, but does not hamper movement. The character is additionally given minor magic resistance to all elements, and moderate resistance to Earth elemental magic. The enchantment lasts for one hour. This spell can only be cast once per hour. Level 5 Transcribe Soul • Healing • This spell is cast on the mage, and remains in effect forever or until used. It is activated immediately if the Mage is killed by any means. When the Mage is killed, all plantlife in the immediate area will die, giving up their ether to create a new body for the Mage a short distance away. The Mages soul is then transferred from the slain body to the new one. The Mage is revived with 100 HP, and can cast any once per day spells or abilities as if they had not yet been used, including Transcribe Soul. Transcribe Soul can only be cast once per day. Wind Magic Level 1 Lightning Bolt • Offensive • Darts of electricity appear in the air above and around the target, shooting towards it and striking it. This spell does more damage to targets wearing metal armor. The stronger the Mage, the more darts created. Electric Touch • Offensive The Mage places his hand on the target, infusing the area with wind ether and shocking them. Wind Lash • Offensive • The Mage disrupts the ether of a wind elemental. This spell causes a great amount of damage, but can only be used on magical targets. Lightning Strike • Offensive • The Mage temporarily enchants an allies weapon, their next strike shocking the enemy with electricity. Throw Object • Offensive • The Mage causes wind to pick up an object the size of an arrow or a rock and fling it at an enemy. This spell cannot change the direction of missiles already in flight, but can be combined with a defensive spell such as Gust or Wind Wall in order to do so. Wind Ward • Defensive • An antimagic Ward is placed around the individual, granting them resistance to Wind spells. Dispel Wind • Defensive • The Mage learns how to dispel Wind magic with greater proficiency. Gust • Defensive • The Mage causes a quick and harsh gust of wind, enough to temporarily stop a man in his tracks, or to deflect javelins, arrows and other missiles for a split second. Resist Wind • Defensive • The Mage grants a party member with a moderate resistance to natural winds. Howling Buckler • Defensive • The Mage creates a small round shield of swirling winds. The shield is easily visible to those with detect magic, but appears as nothing but a faint shimmer to others. It protects about as well as a Hide Shield, of craftsmanship level depending on the Mages Wind proficiency. Only the Mage may use the Howling Buckler. If the Mage has Shield Proficiency or One Hand Casting, it does not inhibit spellcasting. Lightning Rod • Defensive • The Mage places a small ward on the ground that attracts lightning. Endow Lightning • Buff • The Mage instills temporarily endows a party members equipment with wind ether, causing armor to become magic resistant and weapons to glow with energy, harming magical targets. Absorb Wind • Buff • The Mage drains the energy of a natural air source, using it to power a wind spell. Feather • Buff • The Mage reduces a persons weight for a few seconds, allowing them to jump higher than normal or suffer less injury from a long fall. Seeker • Buff • This spell may be cast on a party member using a missile weapon, or before casting a spell that is thrown such as Fireball, Hailstone, Javelin etc. The targets next attack will fly much faster and farther than normal, and strike with superhuman accuracy. This spell can be combined with Guided Throw. Drain Wind • Debuff • The Mage drains a party member of Wind ether, temporarily reducing their INT by 1. Exhaust • Debuff • The Mage sucks the wind from a persons lungs, causing them to gasp for air, be unable to articulate words, or be winded for a few seconds. This spell can be cast to counter Renew Breath. Detect Wind Magic • Non Combat • The Mage becomes more proficient at detecting Wind enchantments and spells. Message on the Wind • Non Combat • The Mage sends a spoken message through a natural breeze, speaking to allies at great distances. Conjure Air • Non Combat • The Mage conjures clean air from nothingness, useful in a poison cloud or underwater for a short duration. While this can allow a person to breathe underwater for a few breaths, it cannot be used repeatedly to allow full underwater breathing. Wind Cantrip • Non Combat • The Mage learns to use wind elemental Cantrips to a more powerful effect. Sense Weather • Non Combat • The Mage does a ritual to foretell the weather. The ritual for this spell takes time to cast, but allows the Mage to effectively predict the weather for the next 24 hours. Higher proficiency levels reduce the rituals time, not increase the prediction time. Renew Air • Healing • The Mage reinvigorates the ether of a summoned air elemental or beast, healing it for 5 HP. This spell can only be used once per day. Renew Breath • Healing • The Mage causes a persons lungs to fill with air, nourishing them if they are tired or overexerted. This spell can naturally counteract Exhaust. It can also be used to allow a single long breath underwater, though it cannot be cast repeatedly to allow full underwater breathing. Level 2 Thunderbolt • Offensive • The Mage creates a shift of air currents in the sky, static resulting in a powerful lightning strike that hits the ground in a predetermined location. This spell deals more damage to targets wearing metal armor. Lightning Trap • Offensive • The Mage creates a pocket of ether that is invisible to the naked eye, but explodes in a flash of lightning when it detects someone coming close. Without being triggered, the trap will remain for one day, or until the Mage moves more than one mile from its location. Level 3 Wind Wall • Defensive • The Mage creates a solid wall of wind, that can deflect both magical and solid attacks. Summon Lightning Beast • Summoning • The Mage summons a sparkling gold, bear sized beast, partially intelligent but very powerful. It has the strength of a basilisk, and can cast level 1 spells. This ability can only be used once per day. Level 4 Flight • Buff • The Mage manipulates the wind to make himself fly. This spell works like a much more powerful and elongated version of the Airdancer skill Wind Walk. The Mage can move at Horse speed across the map whether or not he has a steed. Level 5 Tornado • Offensive • The Mage creates a localized tornado on the spot. The Mage has limited control over the direction of the twister, though it will not move towards or attack the party. The Tornado is so infused with magic that it disturbs the ether plane as well, twisting the ether sea and making it difficult for Mages to cast spells of non Wind schools. This spell can only be cast once per day. Shamanism Level 1 Ether Bolt • Offensive • Darts of white energy appear in the air above and around the target, shooting towards it and striking it with concussive force. The stronger the Mage, the more darts created. Ether Touch • Offensive • The Mage places his hand on the target, releasing a condensced pocket of ether and flinging the target backwords forcefully. Wild Lash • Offensive • The Mage disrupts the ether of a wild elemental. This spell causes a great amount of damage, but can only be used on magical targets. Ether Strike • Offensive • The Mage temporarily enchants an allies weapon, their next strike infused with pure ether and much stronger. Improved Magic Missile • Offensive • While all Mages can throw Magic Missiles, Wild Mages often excell at it, throwing them much faster and with more force. Ether Ward • Defensive • An antimagic Ward is placed around the individual, granting them resistance to Shamanism spells. Dispel Shamanism • Defensive • The Mage learns how to dispel Shamanism magic with greater proficiency. Ether Chains • Defensive • The Mage causes white chains to burst out of the ether plane, grasping onto a target for a brief period. This can stop a man in his tracks for a few seconds, or halt the flight of a missile weapon. Mages Eyes • Buff • The Mage gifts a party member with the ability to see spirits as if they knew the Detect Magic spell. This spell can be cast on one person at a time per level of shamanism proficiency. Drain Ether • Debuff • The Mage drains a party member of Shamanistic ether, temporarily reducing their LUK by 1. Unfamiliarize • Debuff • The Mage temporarily disenchants another Mages staff, removing its ability to assist in forming ether. This spell reduces the staffs abilities by 1 grade, so an Exquisite staff will assist as a normal staff. Detect Shamanism Magic • Non Combat • The Mage becomes more proficient at detecting Shamanism enchantments and spells. Message in the Ether • Non Combat • The Mage sends a spoken message through the ether sea, speaking to allies at great distances. Ether Light • Non Combat • The Mage creates a white light that floats over his shoulder, as bright as any torch. Leyline Compass • Non Combat • The Mage concentrates on the flows of ether, using them to learn the geography of the surrounding land. This spell allows the Mage to effectively find his cardinal directions and landmarks underground or in bad weather. Shamans Lock • Non Combat • The Mage creates an ether ward that stays with an object, locking it unless a passphrase is spoken. This enchantment lasts for one week per level of Shamanism proficiency, and can be dispelled, although it is more difficult than one might expect. Level 4 Summon Warp Spider • Summoning • The Mage pulls through a crack in reality the most dangerous creature in the ether plane, a warp spider. Warp Spiders are tremendous creatures, eight legged and with fangs that can suck the very soul out of an elemental or a man. They are the size of houses, resistant to immune to all spells, and cannot be seen or harmed by non-magical creatures and weapons. The Mage cannot control the Warp Spider, the beast immune to all forms of control. It will immediately seek out and kill everything in the area. This spell can only be cast once per day. Level 4 Chaos Spell • Summoning • The Mage summons a random level 4 elemental spell, which is cast suddenly in a powerful but erratic fashion. Level 5 Level 5 Chaos Spell • Summoning • The Mage summons a random level 5 elemental spell, which is cast suddenly in a powerful but erratic fashion. Doorway • Non Combat • The Mage creates a gateway, allowing access to the ether plane. The doorway remains in play until the Mage dies or chooses to close it, and cannot be dispelled. As long as the doorway is open, the Mage and any party members who pass through will be able to exist, walk, breathe and associate with objects in the ether plane, though elementals living in the ether sea can still attack them. Only the Mage and those he allows can pass through the doorway in either direction. Should the Mage be killed, the doorway will begin to close, though other party members may still have a short time to escape. This spell can only be cast once per day. Necromancy Level 1 Ghost Bolt • Offensive • Darts of black energy appear in the air above and around the target, shooting towards it and striking it. The bolts will cause severe pain to those afflicted, or a numbing depression and malaise, but will do no physical damage. The stronger the Mage, the more darts created. Pain • Offensive • The Mage causes an unnatural burning pain to occur in the target, disorienting him. Soul Ward • Defensive • An antimagic Ward is placed around the individual, granting them resistance to Necromancy spells. Dispel Necromancy • Defensive • The Mage learns how to dispel Necromantic magic with greater proficiency. Condition the Mind • Defensive • The Mage understands the flow of his own ether, and can control it to a degree, becoming resistant to most forms of psychological attack. This spell is always active while the Mage is awake, and can only target the Mage himself. Once the Necromancer obtains Emotion Control, he can cast this spell on others. Summon Ghost Wisp • Summoning • The Mage summons a glowing and partially intelligent ball of necromantic ether. The wisp flits around, but never strays too far from the party. The wisps ether can be absorbed to cast a necromancy spell in an emergency, or can be instructed to attack a necromancy spell cast at the party, neutralizing it. Call Ghost • Summoning • The Mage temporarily calls a person back from the dead. This spell must be cast over their earthly body, and must be cast within one day of the persons death. The spirit will not be able to affect the physical world, but has all of its living memories and can talk with the Mage. This spell can only be cast once per day. The level 5 spell Reanimate can be used to essentially revive the person after this is cast. Instill Soul • Buff • The Mage instills a party member with Necromantic ether, granting them +1 Cha temporarily. Endow Soul • Buff • The Mage instills temporarily endows a party members equipment with necromantic ether, causing armor to become magic resistant and weapons to glow with energy, harming magical targets. Beauty • Buff • The Mage brings out the natural beauty in an individual. While this does not cause people to see what is not there, it shows a persons form in the best possible lights and angles. This spell can directly counter Ugliness. Bravery • Buff • The Mage instills a party member with an emboldened spirit, similar to the effects of the Rally spell. This spell can be cast to counter Fear. Beasts Fury • Buff/Debuff • The Mage prompts ravenous instincts in an animal, inciting it to a sudden rage. This rage can increase the ferocity of trained pets, or turn an enemies hound on its master. Drain Soul • Debuff • The Mage drains a party member of Necromantic ether, temporarily reducing their CHA by 1. Ugliness • Debuff • The Mage brings out the natural ugliness in an individual. While this does not cause people to see what is not there, it shows a persons form in the worst possible lights and angles. This spell can directly counter Beauty. Fear • Debuff • The Mage causes the target to become unnaturally afraid of an individual. This spell can be cast to counter Bravery. Chains of the Grave • Debuff • The Mage causes the target to feel the forces of gravity much more than they should. Their body will become heavy and difficult to move. This spell will have a greater effect on lower Strength targets. Detect Necromantic Magic • Non Combat • The Mage becomes more proficient at detecting Necromantic enchantments and spells. Message in the Mind • Non Combat • The Mage sends a spoken message directly into a persons mind, speaking to allies at great distances. Presence • Non Combat • The Mage mixes ether with his words, enhancing the psychological impact of a part of a speech or a few spoken phrases. People who would otherwise be unmoved can be moved by words said alongside Presence. This spell can only be cast once per day. Renew Soul • Healing • The Mage reinvigorates the ether of a summoned necromantic elemental or beast, healing it for 5 HP. This spell can only be used once per day. Calm • Healing • The Mage soothes a persons mind, removing feelings of fear, doubt or guilt. While Call Ghost allows the Mage to talk with a specific spirit, this spell allows casual conversation with any ghost floating by. Level 3 Summon Ghostly Beast • Summoning • The Mage summons an invisible, black, bear sized beast, partially intelligent but very powerful. It has the strength of a basilisk, and can cast level 1 spells. This spell can only be cast once per day. This ability can only be used once per day. Lie • Non Combat • The Mage alters the perception of everyone in earshot, forcing them to believe the next thing the Mage says as truth. The Mage will be able to tell any sort of lie, no matter how extravagant, and everyone in earshot will believe it as an obvious truth. Depending on the ridiculousness of the lie, those affected may never realize they've been tricked, or may figure it out after a few days. This spell can only be cast once per day. Level 4 Compel Elemental • Debuff • The Mage temporarily gains control of another Mages contracted elemental. This is essentially an elemental specific version of the Lich skill Absolute Control. The elemental will be unable to disobey the casters orders, and cannot be unsummond by its previous owner. The spell is released if the elemental moves farther than a half mile from the caster, or after one hour. This spell can only be cast once per day. Level 5 Reanimate • Buff/Summoning • The Mage summons the soul of the recently dead, linking it to a suit of armor, a soulless body, a skeleton, or other object. This spell can only be used on the soul of an individual whose ghost is present, but once their soul is linked to a new body, the reanimation is permanent. The reanimated object essentially becomes a sentient golem. The Mage can cast this spell on himself immediately after death, if a suitable object is present. This spell can only be cast once per day.
