When the RX-78 Gundam was completed, it was intended purely as an initial-run testbed unit. The preliminary data acquired from the Gundam was used in construction of a pair of pre-production mobile suits: The RGM-79E for space combat, and the RGM-79[G] for land combat. The GM Ground Type, as it was thusly named, was in many ways a slightly scaled-down Gundam without the technology for use in space combat. The GM Ground Type's heavy armor and substandard thruster output makes it more of a tank than the later-model RGM-79, and while it isn't quite as maneuverable, it makes up for it with its durability.
The GM Ground Type Sniper is externally identical to the stock RGM-79[G]. Its primary weapon is a massive, long-barreled beam sniper rifle, capable of striking out against distant targets with extremely great power. However, it cannot power itself, and must be able to draw on external power to fire, either an external E-pac "battery" or the reactor of a nearby battleship. Additionally, it cannot be fired in succession, as it must power down to cool off between shots.
