Rando led the pack of ‘Ead ‘Unters from their boat up onto the shores of Faust’s territory. It was a cold and chilly night with no moon visible in the sky and the sounds of a few breeds of birds singing, talking, breeding or whatever the heck the calls meant. Rando had guessed that the peaceful and vegetable eating Faust would probably not have many defences up. And as he quickly looked around he didn’t see any up. All that stood before him were the sights and sounds of nature. As he stood beside Bovril, he waited for Manbearpig to rejoin them. Manbearpig hid the boat between a boulder and trees before walking up to the two. “I don’t see anyone nearby. We stay in the shadows tonight, do not engage anyone and just survey the area. Understood?” “How about if we get hungry?” Manbearpig asked. Bovril smiled. “I’m sure we can find something to fill us up.” The three set out to survey Faust land. Outcome: Recon achieved Bovril: 5 EXP, Healthy Manbearpig: 5 EXP, Healthy Rando: 5 EXP, Healthy

Malek was sitting just outside a nearby house, talking to a friend while playing a game similar to chess. The house that Len had been resting in was the one he shared with his twin brother, Ethan. He had also made it his responsibility to make sure the young lad would be taken good care of. So when he heard the commotion that Len had started up, he made sure to rush right over. “What seems to be the problem?” He asked the guards. He didn’t need a response, as he could see that the two guards he had appointed to guard Len were trying to calm the teen down, but Len resisted. “Release him and step away slowly.” Malek said. “He is incapable of running away very far in his condition anyways.” The guards nodded and followed Malek’s commands. As the guards stepped back, Malek approached Len slowly with his hands up to signify he meant no harm. The sight that greeted Len next was a smiling twenty-something year old man at about 1.8m tall, with curly auburn hair. He had fair skin and a rather kind face. After trying to signal to Len that he should calm down, he started making hand motions to ask Len if he was hungry or thirsty.

Zayel Blackstaff, leader of the peaceful and somewhat mysterious people of Faust, eyed his hunting partner slowly closing the distance between herself and the beast they were hunting. The two had decided that it’d be best for Artemis to take the first shot, especially with her newly acquired Ceroatanian feathers. Artemis’ feet seemed to dance on air, as she neared a set of twin trees whose trunks had grown into each other. She left not a footprint in her path, nor made even the faintest of sounds that could be picked up by a creature with the most sensitive of hearing. To her right were vast plans that stretched to the shores of Faust. To her left was forest that grew denser as it reached the center of Faust. Along this border, and two her front, a large creature nested between the twin tree trunks. Its skin was a greyish brown, and its size was easily more than twice that of Artemis’. This creature, an Albineeceros, was covered in many folds of skin, giving it an almost obese slug-like appearance. It was sitting with its flipper-like tail facing Artemis and its face out of sight. Artemis hid behind a few boulders as she reached for her bow, aimed and fired. Her moonlight arrows hit their mark, but seemed to bounce off the skin of the Albineeceros. Artemis narrowed her eyes in disapproval, before pulling out a second arrow, and a third. Both had the same effect as the first. The creature seemed to be in a deep sleep, as it had yet to move, even after three arrows had hit its rear. Zayel eyed all this from a distance. He left his hiding and quickly ran to Artemis’ side. Artemis sensed him approaching and quietly whispered to him as he reached her. “Its hide seems too tough for my arrows. Perhaps, you can try something else?” Zayel nodded. “Very well.” Zayel slowly approached the Albineeceros as he prepared his psion-dominate spell. But it was then that the creature turned around to show its head to the two hunters. Zayel stopped in his tracks. The Albineeceros eyed him as its long white tusks glistened in the morning sun. Zayel used his Blackstaff wand to gather the last of the energies he’d need for his psion spell. The Albineeceros, not happy at having been disturbed in his slumber, charged at the Faust leader. The creature had some distance to cover but it took care of it quickly and before Zayel could get a hold on Albineeceros for his spell to work, the practically that he closely adhered to had him retreating to cover. He found his way back the boulders Artemis’ was stationed behind. “Are you sure you can not try your bow once again, but at a less tougher part of its body?” he asked. “I could try aiming for its face or underside.” Artemis eyed the once again stationary Albineeceros. It slowly turned its head as if it had lost sight of Zayel. Artemis peaked her head to the side of the boulder just far enough to fire again. This time though, her arrows failed to find her mark as the Albineeceros turned to face her and charged. By the time the Albineeceros had charged into the boulders, Zayel and Artemis had managed to retreat just far enough to escape its attack. “I vote we call this hunt over. It moves too fast for me to attack it, if your arrows will be of no use.” Artemis nodded. Outcome: Hunt Draw Artemis: 5EXP, Wounded, Albineecerous Disease gained Zayel Blackstaff: 5EXP, Wounded, Albineecerous Disease gained

Rando continued walking towards the Faust settlement as Manbearpig followed closely behind. He looked to Manbearpig and thought about how it was too bad that Bovril couldn’t join them. Building his army will take a while, but at least today he could get a taste of the kind of settlements he’ll have to deal with in the future. Speaking of taste, Rando eyed a small apple farm in the distance resulting in a smile forming on Rando’s face. He pointed to the apple farm, “What do you say we have some fun with that?” he asked. Manbearpig. “An apple farm?” “Yes, I hate vegetables and fruits aren’t much better. Let’s tear the place apart!” Manbearpig laughed heartily in response and ran towards the apple farm with Rando running closely behind him. Within minutes fierce claws and huge, muscular hands were tearing apart trees full of deliciously ripe red apples. They dismembered tree limbs from their trunks, used them as clubs to crash through nearby sheds, and made careful care to trample on any fruits that dropped from their branches. Rando was crushing three apples in his right hand when a needle prickled his shoulder. He turned around to see what looked like walking cacti with faces unleashing a salvo of needles towards him and Manbearpig. Manbearpig roared and started to charge towards a group of Cactuar that were huddled together. They were able to easily evade Manbearpig though and with a few squeaks and warbles to each other, more Cactuar joined their ranks. Rando, angered at having his fun spoiled by the green pests, was able to cover his face as he swatted a Cactuar that had wandered too close to him. The Cactuar fell down easily. Some seconds later, Rando eyed some gold coins by the fallen Cactuar. Picking a few up he was able to make out the letters “Gil” on one. With one of their own having been taken down, the Cactuar exchanged a few words. “Ge-ka! Ge-ge-ka-ge-ka-ka!” The assembled squad, now numbering more than two dozen, switched from their Needles attack to their stronger Needle-Shot attack. Even Manbearbig’s blind rage, and Rando’s extreme durability were no match for the onslaught their bodies were soon met with. Without exchanging even a word or look between one other, the two started to retreat from the apple farm. As Rando and Manbearpig ran away, a few courageous Cactuar chased after them. A lone Faust child, walking by in the distance, was met with the picture of Cactuar chasing the sights of a bear-like beast and a smaller, but muscular creature towards the shore. She chuckled at the amusing sight of scary beasts being chased away by the more gentle and whimsical looking Cactuar. Her father, who had ran towards the commotion, had the opposite reaction as he eyed the destroyed apple farm. Outcome: Raid Successful Manbearpig: 10EXP, Crippled, 5xShards gained Rando: 10EXP, Crippled, 5xShards gained

Eknara Orkaro was sitting in her office within the Khaotics headquarters. Her room was currently lit by flames powered by the simplest of fire spells. It was evening and not all the lights were on. So many a shadows seemed to dance energetically along the walls, floor and furniture of the room. Located within the second highest level of the tower within the headquarters, the hardwood floor was covered with an intricately designed carpet that a large circular table was placed upon. The table was surrounded by large cushioned arm chairs made of a dark coloured wood. Along the walls were large bookshelves mostly full of literature on spells as well as the art, strategies and mechanics of war as practiced by the Khaotics. Between the large space from the bookshelves to the armchairs were comfortably cushioned sofas meant to promote a more relaxing environment for the perusal of the large volume of books. On one side of the room was Eknara’s rather large desk. Eknara was sitting in the large chair behind the desk and behind her were the heavy curtains that were now drawn to shield a large window spanning a few metres in both width and height. Aicatul was perched practically out of sight on that windowsill as he eyed the townsfolk running around below him. She was the only currently in the room, and the only doors leading in and out of the room were blocked by the two guards of the Lords of Change class who were charged with her protection. The orb to the corner of her desk glowed in shades of red instead of the usual shades of green. This signaled that she had a visitor. Amidst the glimmering shades of red a faint picture of one of her lieutenants moved slightly as he exchanged a few words with her guards. Eknara waved her hand across the globe and uttered a simple “let him in” to accept the lieutenant. Aicatul’s curiousity was piqued as he flew from the window to land on Eknara’s right on the desk. The doors opened for him, allowing him to walk in and offer Eknara a simple nod in greeting. “Commander,” he said. Eknara nodded in reply. “Take a seat, Aleksiol,” she said as she offered him a faint smile. He was a close of hers and the twins (Ethan and Malek). It inwardly stung her that he more often than not chose to treat her more formally because of her new position, but she accepted as a change that couldn’t be helped. Aleksiol dragged one of the seats from the table and positioned it to face Eknara before he sat down. “I have a few pieces of information, Commander, that I wish to relay to you. The first one deals with a newcomer whom many are not comfortable having amongst us.” “Oh?” She asked. Aleksiol’s features contorted into an expression filled with a hint of disgust and hatred. “He calls himself ‘Joe Catalano’. Since he’s shown up babies have gone missing in the areas he’s been spotted.” Eknara shot up in her chair. “What?!” Aleksiol stared straight into Eknara’s eyes with a very serious expression. “Mothers and fathers are worried about the well-being of their young and are forcing their children to stay indoors. I’ve heard rumours of him actually stealing babies since he’s been sighted, and I have talked to two families that have lost their young. A few have gone out to search for him in anger. One of these people went missing and was found the next day as if …” he stopped as his shoulders shook in anger while he looked away for a second as his expression once again returned to one of disgust. He turned back to eye Eknara. Eknara couldn’t believe what she was hearing, but Aleksiol’s information was always accurate. He was a good friend, so she knew him well and trusted him with her life. “He had been fed on. One of our own... The townspeople are furious and are demanding that he be dealt with.” Eknara’s blood was boiling. She took a second to calm her nerves before replying. “Do you know where he can be found?” “Not exactly,” Aleksiol replied. “But my people have an idea.” Eknara nodded. “I will round up a small squad and have him taken care of as soon as possible.” Eknara stood up from her desk. “If your next reports can wait, I’d like to hear of them tomorrow instead of today.” Aleksiol nodded. “They can wait.”

Chapter 2: Dangerous Steps Eknara took a seat as she flipped through the book Prilla had handed to her. With little interest in her work she tried a few exercise spells outlined in the book and easily excelled in all of them. ‘Boring,’ she thought. ‘So very boring. I don’t wanna do this for the next two and a half hours.’ Her eyes gravitated toward the door that led to Prilla’s personal study, and then to the purse that held the key she had crafted herself (to use in ocassionally sneaking into the room she was specifically not allowed into by herself). Aicatul, forever her conscious, sensed her bristling curiosity. “You really shouldn’t,” he added. “I just wanna look. It won’t hurt any. It’s the kind of things Prilla will be teaching me soon anyways.” Without another word, she fetched the key from her purse and unlocked Prilla’s study. Her mouth salivated as she reached for the appropriate drawer and fetched out the materials. In seconds her eyes were devouring the text in the book as she tried to make sense of what she was reading. The book had no title on its cover. “Well?” Aicatul asked. Although her conscious just a minute ago, he could not overcome the curiosity that compelled Eknara so. “It’s talking about …” Eknara read some more. “It’s mentioning different dimensions beyond our own.” She took a seat on a stool and flipped through a few chapters, with her eyes never leaving the text as she became even more captivated by the contents of the book. “Portals! It’s talking about the possibility of weakening the barrier between our dimension and another and creating a temporary door to pass through. Aicatul, this is really cool! Just think about what we could explore. Think about what may be beyond our own plane.” Her eyes shone with excitement as she continued talking.”We could walk into a world where airships were never invented, so everyone has to use train travel or travel by sea. Hmm... or a world where everyone could fly on their own like a bird or something. Like that self-propulsion spell I’ve been trying to get work for the last few months. Maybe someone’s perfected it and then I can soar through the skies just like you do. Or ...” She trailed off, never finishing her comment, as she flipped through a few more pages. “This is all theory. Where’s the applied magic section?” “Maybe it’s in that scroll?” “Ah, yes. Good thinking, Aicatul.” An hour later, Eknara had gathered the material she’d need for some rudimentary practice spells and was completely engrossed in her adventurous testing session. “Okay. I’ve got a few testing figures and I’ve taken down some barriers a bit,” Eknara mused to herself. “Next, I need to construct a temporary passage. It’ll involve making a cut, expanding a window and laying down a kinda bridge framework.” Eknara smiled turning to Aicatul. “Kinda like that tunnel Prilla had me construct last week to amplify wind spells. And then we’ll need to use something to prevent the bridge framework from collapsing so that’ll take up quite a bit of energy. Hmm...” Eknara ran to the other room to fetch her butterfly sword. “I hope this’ll be enough.” Aicatul started to twitch a bit, as he worried about the repercussions of the actions they were just about to take. “Oh, don’t worry. These spells all require magic I’ve practiced and excelled in. Just with a different, new and exciting objective. It’ll just take a few minutes. Prilla shouldn’t be back for another hour and a half. Plenty of time,” she smiled. Eknara proceeded to cast the necessary series of spells. Although her excitement grew as she neared her goal it was followed by a feeling of fear and nervousness. These feelings were ignored, however, as Eknara was certainly not going to give up before she caught a glimpse of success in the newest and most exciting set of spells she’d been able to partake in for weeks. “I can see something,” Aicatul said. “There’s a hole and it’s slowly expanding.” Eknara’s eyes were closed in deep concentration. She felt quite a bit of her energy ebbing away as well. “Oh, it’s cold! There’s snow everywhere.” She shivered, and put some distance between himself and the portal. “Just one sec,” Eknara told Aicatul. “Just have to,” she paused for a second.”Okay, that should do it.” She opened her eyes and was met with a dark cloudy scenery just two metres before her. There was a lone house far off in the distance. Otherwise she saw nothing but snow all around and not a sign of life in sight. “It worked! By the Gods, this is unbelievable! This is,” she paused. “It really is cold. First test is a success, so I’m gonna go ahead and close this and try another. Anehta is smiling on us today.”

Eknara eyed the boy as he closed his eyes. It bugged her that she couldn’t understand what he was saying. Aicatul flew to his side and approached Len cautiously while making sure not to move too close to touch him. “It looks like he’s passed out.” “Yeah …” She placed a wary hand on Len’s forehead. “We really need to get him some help. And quick.” Len’s forehead was not at a cool body temperature. Eknara closed her eyes and tried to concentrate on the message she’d send through the Khaotics hive mind and the one or two people she wanted to contact. “Malek, Ethan. I need your help.” She waited a few seconds before a very familiar voice spoke up louder than the other voices in the hive. The rest of the chatter in the hive sounded more like noise than intelligible words to her at that point. “Eknara, where are you?! Malek said he saw you running frantically into the woods and he --” She didn’t let the voice finish. “I’m sorry to have worried Malek and you, Ethan. But I need your help.” “What is the matter, Eknara? Have you been injured?” It was Malek this time who voiced his concern. She bit her lip, and quietly berated herself. They had been really worried about her as of late and she really hated to trouble them with her problems after all they’d done for her. But in this case someone else was at stake. “No, Malek. I’m fine, really. But there’s a boy here and he’s hurt. He’s passed out and I don’t think I can carry him all the way back.” “Please state your current location. I will send a squad out to you immediately.” Eknara had a worried face as she looked about her. She still didn’t know where she was. “I … need to figure out where I am first.” “Aicatul, can you … ?” Aicatul nodded at her before she finished her request, knowing fully well what she wanted to ask of him. He flew up into the air as far as he could before the pain of separation started to sneak up on him. It took him a minute, but he was able to pick out some land features that he was familiar with. He relayed everything to Eknara, and after they had figured out where they most likely were, Eknara used the hive mind once again to let Ethan and Malek know where she was.

Artemis moved quietly through the Faust forest shortly after dawn. Although a layer of clouds had invaded the sky, she had all the light she needed for her current activity: A hunt for a Ceroatanian. It was a species of small birds that Artemis had discovered once before. This would be her first time hunting them. Having decided to travel bare-foot for the hunt, her feet were covered in the cold dew that had settled on the grass some hours before as her clothes danced ceremonially in the light wind. She walked with a nearly unparalleled grace and failed completely to produce any sound that would startle her prey. Artemis reached a bush and peaked through an opening. There they were. A flock, or wake as she had learned they were called, of nearly two dozen Ceroatanian. They were huddled together on the beach, just metres away from the borders the Faust forest. She eyed the peculiar four-legged birds and smiled when she saw a few them were doing what they were known for; walking on water as if they were as light as air itself. Her hands seemed to move on their own as she brought her long bow forward. She pulled skillfully on the string in order to have an arrow, made purely of moon light energy, materialize from one hand to the other as the bow grew taught. She kept her eyes on her target, aiming for one of the bigger birds that was nearly about a metre long. Using her True Shot skill the arrow had no problem finding its mark after it glided quietly through the air. It left an iridescent trail marking its course that quickly faded away just as soon as it caught an observer’s eye. A Ceroatanian fell on its side by the beach and slowly started bleeding from its wound. A chorus of sharp cries followed just a second after as the remaining flock panicked and tried to flee to safety. Artemis’ cover was blown, but she had no need of it anymore as she walked happily to her fallen prey. Outcome: Hunt successful Artemis: 5 EXP, Wounded

Eknara watched as Len fell down. He was saying something. But the meaning of the words were lost on her. Unlike with the first people she met in Thracs, she could not understand the language the boy spoke. As she continued to glance at the boy, an understanding slowly settled on her: He was no threat to her. He was a mess, yes. But the look that the boy gave her was one of sorrow. He was pleading with her. She may not have understood what he said, but the tone of his voice, the look in his eyes and the way he had fallen down and was clearly unable to get up again spoke volumes. The blood must have been his own and the way his arm moved clearly indicated that he could no longer move it. Eknara’s features softened at the sight. The tension escaped from her body as fear was quickly replaced with compassion. “He’s hurt, Aicatul.” Her daemon nodded at her. She slowly approached the boy as he lay on his back.

“Aicatul, stop it!” Eknara was almost quite literally running for her life. “STOP IT!” she shouted panting. “You know I can’t run as fast as you can fly!” Eknara was hurting and she had no doubt Aicatul was too. But her daemon kept lengthening the distance between them in order to keep her running. For neither could bear prolonged separation by great distances. Aicatul, seeming to hear her latest plea, settled on a nearby tree in the woods. He looked down on his human and yearned greatly to return to her. But he was doing this for her own good. Eknara finally stopped running when the need to disappeared. She fell with her back to the trunk of a tree as she tried to catch her breath. Aicatul, having lost his will to stay apart any longer, flew to her arms and Eknara accepted him gratefully. A few tears escaped her eyes as she held him closely. Aicatul tried to soothe her. “Needed to stop sulking … to get up and actually get your blood pumping.” “I know,” Eknara interjected. Aicatul continued. “We need to accept we’re stuck on Thracs and just move on.” “I know!” Eknara cried. “I know.” She had fallen into a depression after her latest attempt to return to Aerillia had failed. It was her final chance. She had no more avenues to try. Malek and, especially, Ethan would check up on her and make sure she was at least eating, but otherwise she did not leave her room for days and merely sulked. She hadn’t even changed her clothes and was still currently in her full armour. But Aicatul, although of course suffering from the same depression as Eknara, found some strength within himself to force Eknara out of bed. He flew for short stretches and only stopped to let Eknara catch up. As soon as she had caught up to him, he broke into flight again. And he kept on doing this over and over again to keep her moving. It was only now, about a little longer than half an hour later, that he let himself return to her, having deemed that he had pushed for long enough. He nuzzled himself against his human. A few minutes later, after they had recovered from the harsh ordeal, Eknara looked up. “Where are we?” She did not recognize her surroundings. “Aicatul, where did you take us to?” Aicatul, not knowing the answer himself, stayed quiet. Eknara Orkaro bit her lip and continued moving. She was relieved that she at least had the luxury of being able to actually walk at a leisurely pace this time. If it was night, she could have used the constellations that Ethan engraved in her memories to get back. But it was in the middle of the day, and she had nothing but a cloudy sky above her. She continued walking until she heard some water running. Judging that it would help her get back to her new Khaotics home, she followed it. Soon, she had left the deep forested area that Aicatul had blindly guided them to and had reached a little opening that was the home to a small river and … a boy a few years her junior quickly walking out to her as he shouted something. Eknara eyed the state of his clothes and body as her eyes widened in fear. His clothes were tattered and he was bleeding. She stopped in her tracks, frightened, and started to slowly walk backwards as he neared her. She, for some reason, never took her eyes off him even though she was obviously scared by the sight of him. Aicatul shrieked.
