Chapter 1: Impulsive Decisions

Eknara yawned. “I can’t believe we slept in, Aicatul. Suehprom was far too kind to us last night.” Eknara’s daemon, Aicatul, landed on her left shoulder as the young sorcerer’s apprentice walked into her mentor’s house. It was a huge house that was a little on the modest size and located quietly near the end of the street.

“Shouldn’t have stayed up so late reading,” Aicatul cautioned. His form was that of a Saker’s Falcon, while his human was a young twenty your old girl with brown skin, green hair and ever curious blue eyes.

“I wonder what Prilla’s gonna have us do today. I am so tired of all these boring ‘mandatory’ exercises. I mean when was the last time we actually did something fun and exciting?!” Eknara exclaimed this with a hint of enthusiasm as she clenched her fists before her. As she surveyed the room in search of her mentor she added in a quiet more thoughtful tone, “it’s even been a while since we’ve gone hunting.”

“Study,” Aicatul chimed in.

“Yeah …” Eknara answered, acknowledging that her mentor, Prilla, was probably busy in her study as usual. Eknara approached the designated room and knocked.

“Come in,” welcomed a voice. As Eknara opened the door she was greeted by the sight of a white panther; Prilla’s daemon by the name of Laitmar. Aicatul greeted him as Eknara walked to a table in Prilla’s study. Prilla was obviously very busy working on something and this piqued Eknara’s interest.

“Ooh! What are you working on?” Eknara’s excitement was portrayed in Aicatul’s sudden take-off into the air as he circled the rather large room before zeroing on the table filled with reading material, various instruments and other odd objects Prilla used in her casting.

“Not anything you’re quite yet ready for, my child.” Prilla rolled up some scrolls and closed a rather large book that she was just perusing before turning to Eknara. “Why are you late today?”

An ashamed expression suddenly appeared on Eknara’s face. “I … ummm... that book you lent me on ---”

“You stayed up late reading, didn’t you?” Prilla interrupted.

“It was really interesting though. I mean it went into so much detail on how I could improve the intensity of my fire spells and it talked about so many different kinds of fire spells I could do.” Unable to meet Prilla’s eyes at that moment, she looked down at her feet and shuffled them a bit.

Tardiness was a common habit of Eknara that Prilla was still working on breaking. Eknara had improved over the years under Prilla’s tutelage, but she would always relapse every now and then. Today, she was around an hour and thirty minutes late.

Prilla sighed as she was perfectly aware of this habit of Eknara’s to not be able to put down a good book. She admired the young lady’s enthusiasm in her studies, but the lack of discipline the girl possessed in some areas was still troubling.

Eknara heard the sigh and lifted her head. Her attention once again went towards the large book and scroll that Prilla was now shoving into a desk drawer. ‘First from the top, second from the right. Got it.

“Well, it’s a bit too late to go on that hunt I was going to take you on to work on some long range attacks and concentration skills … so I’m gonna leave you alone with this text for some private study and tests. I have to take care of a few errands. I’ll be back in about three hours.” Prilla handed Eknara a red leather-bound book. “The materials you need are laid out for you over in the other room.” Eknara was not allowed alone in Prilla’s private study.

The young lady eyed the text on the book as her eyes glazed over. ‘I’ve already been through this how many times now?’ she asked herself. ‘I really should have just put that book down earlier last night. That hunt would have been nice …

Eknara was already bored. Aicatul was seemingly dozing off as he eyed some children running on the other side of the study’s windows.

“Okay …” Eknara looked up at Prilla. “I’m really sorry about being late. Can we please go on that hunt tomorrow morning?”

“We’ll see,” Prilla answered and motioned for the young lady to get out. Eknara followed and walked in front of Prilla to the smaller room across from Prilla’s study. She clenched her jaw as she heard Prilla locking the door to the study behind her.

Chapter 2: Dangerous Steps

Eknara took a seat as she flipped through the book Prilla had handed to her. With little interest in her work she tried a few exercise spells outlined in the book and easily excelled in all of them.

Boring,’ she thought. ‘So very boring. I don’t wanna do this for the next two and a half hours.

Her eyes gravitated toward the door that led to Prilla’s personal study, and then to the purse that held the key she had crafted herself (to use in ocassionally sneaking into the room she was specifically not allowed into by herself). Aicatul, forever her conscious, sensed her bristling curiosity.

“You really shouldn’t,” he added.

“I just wanna look. It won’t hurt any. It’s the kind of things Prilla will be teaching me soon anyways.”

Without another word, she fetched the key from her purse and unlocked Prilla’s study. Her mouth salivated as she reached for the appropriate drawer and fetched out the materials. In seconds her eyes were devouring the text in the book as she tried to make sense of what she was reading. The book had no title on its cover.

“Well?” Aicatul asked. Although her conscious just a minute ago, he could not overcome the curiosity that compelled Eknara so.

“It’s talking about …” Eknara read some more. “It’s mentioning different dimensions beyond our own.” She took a seat on a stool and flipped through a few chapters, with her eyes never leaving the text as she became even more captivated by the contents of the book.

“Portals! It’s talking about the possibility of weakening the barrier between our dimension and another and creating a temporary door to pass through. Aicatul, this is really cool! Just think about what we could explore. Think about what may be beyond our own plane.” Her eyes shone with excitement as she continued talking.”We could walk into a world where airships were never invented, so everyone has to use train travel or travel by sea. Hmm... or a world where everyone could fly on their own like a bird or something. Like that self-propulsion spell I’ve been trying to get work for the last few months. Maybe someone’s perfected it and then I can soar through the skies just like you do. Or ...”

She trailed off, never finishing her comment, as she flipped through a few more pages. “This is all theory. Where’s the applied magic section?”

“Maybe it’s in that scroll?”

“Ah, yes. Good thinking, Aicatul.”

An hour later, Eknara had gathered the material she’d need for some rudimentary practice spells and was completely engrossed in her adventurous testing session.

“Okay. I’ve got a few testing figures and I’ve taken down some barriers a bit,” Eknara mused to herself. “Next, I need to construct a temporary passage. It’ll involve making a cut, expanding a window and laying down a kinda bridge framework.” Eknara smiled turning to Aicatul. “Kinda like that tunnel Prilla had me construct last week to amplify wind spells. And then we’ll need to use something to prevent the bridge framework from collapsing so that’ll take up quite a bit of energy. Hmm...”

Eknara ran to the other room to fetch her butterfly sword. “I hope this’ll be enough.”

Aicatul started to twitch a bit, as he worried about the repercussions of the actions they were just about to take.

“Oh, don’t worry. These spells all require magic I’ve practiced and excelled in. Just with a different, new and exciting objective. It’ll just take a few minutes. Prilla shouldn’t be back for another hour and a half. Plenty of time,” she smiled.

Eknara proceeded to cast the necessary series of spells. Although her excitement grew as she neared her goal it was followed by a feeling of fear and nervousness. These feelings were ignored, however, as Eknara was certainly not going to give up before she caught a glimpse of success in the newest and most exciting set of spells she’d been able to partake in for weeks.

“I can see something,” Aicatul said. “There’s a hole and it’s slowly expanding.”

Eknara’s eyes were closed in deep concentration. She felt quite a bit of her energy ebbing away as well.

“Oh, it’s cold! There’s snow everywhere.” She shivered, and put some distance between himself and the portal.

“Just one sec,” Eknara told Aicatul. “Just have to,” she paused for a second.”Okay, that should do it.”

She opened her eyes and was met with a dark cloudy scenery just two metres before her. There was a lone house far off in the distance. Otherwise she saw nothing but snow all around and not a sign of life in sight.

“It worked! By the Gods, this is unbelievable! This is,” she paused. “It really is cold. First test is a success, so I’m gonna go ahead and close this and try another. Anehta is smiling on us today.”

Chapter 3: Repercussions Of Unheeded Warnings

Forty-five minutes later, Eknara had opened half a dozen portals just to peek through. The views she was greeted with included strange craft flying through the sky (much to her delight) very alien looking creatures, bizarre looking architectures and various sights that were as dull as grass plains. She was awed and mesmerized by absolutely everything she saw and quickly lost track of time.

Aicatul, although also overcome by Eknara’s emotions, was able to take his attention away from the portals for a minute as he noted the time. “Eknara!”

“What?” she said, obviously peeved to be interrupted in her adventure.

“Prilla should be back in about 15 minutes or so. We have to clean up and get out of here. I really don’t want to have be chastised by Laitmar!”

Eknara nearly jumped up in surprise. “Okay, help me clean up while I close up this last portal.”

Eknara wasn’t able to concentrate very well as the urgency of erasing any signs of her transgression overcame her. It was then that things stopped going her way. As she conducted a series of spells to break down the bridge she had constructed in order to close the portal before her, she messed up somewhere and a new unintended portal opened up. Although unsure of where she went wrong, the young apprentice hurried to fix her mistake. It was then that Aicatul picked up the large untitled text book and forgetting that there was a portal right behind him, flew straight into it.

Eknara’s heart suddenly sank. All thoughts of cleaning up her mess quickly escaped her thoughts to be replaced by only one goal; closing the distance between herself and her daemon. The fear of any chance of losing him for even an instant was far too much to bear.

Aicatul had noticed his mistake and turned around to fly back, but Eknara took no notice of this as she shouted his name and leapt through the portal to embrace him. He flew into her arms and Eknara hugged him with all her might.

It was a minute or two before before they regained their composure enough to turn around and find the portal had disappeared completely out of sight. She had, of course, been breaking down what was needed to keep any portal open when the mishaps started.

Eknara was suddenly afraid all over again. “Great Suez, no! Ai … Aicatul... where is it?” Her voice, initially soft, suddenly grew loud and harsh. “Where’s the window?! WHERE?!” She fidgeted, and started turning around in sudden bursts, completing a number of revolutions as if the portal would suddenly reappear before her. Meanwhile, Aicatul flew around in frantic circles; just as distressed as his human.

It was a minute before she noticed a slight breeze and looked down. She was completely naked. The harsh truth finally started to settle on her. Her eyes glazed over and she dropped to her knees before crying her eyes out.

If you are lost in your way
Deep in an awesome story
Don't be in doubt and stray
Cling to your lonesome folly

Now you're too close to the pain
Let all the rain go further
Come back and kiss me in vain
Mother oh do not bother

Hear the chorus of pain

Taking you back to proper ways
It's so easy to find
If you could remind me

Now you are lost in your way
Deep in an awesome story
So I will find you again
Kiss you for lonesome folly
