Eknara Orkaro was sitting in her office within the Khaotics headquarters. Her room was currently lit by flames powered by the simplest of fire spells. It was evening and not all the lights were on. So many a shadows seemed to dance energetically along the walls, floor and furniture of the room. Located within the second highest level of the tower within the headquarters, the hardwood floor was covered with an intricately designed carpet that a large circular table was placed upon. The table was surrounded by large cushioned arm chairs made of a dark coloured wood. Along the walls were large bookshelves mostly full of literature on spells as well as the art, strategies and mechanics of war as practiced by the Khaotics. Between the large space from the bookshelves to the armchairs were comfortably cushioned sofas meant to promote a more relaxing environment for the perusal of the large volume of books. On one side of the room was Eknara’s rather large desk. Eknara was sitting in the large chair behind the desk and behind her were the heavy curtains that were now drawn to shield a large window spanning a few metres in both width and height. Aicatul was perched practically out of sight on that windowsill as he eyed the townsfolk running around below him. She was the only currently in the room, and the only doors leading in and out of the room were blocked by the two guards of the Lords of Change class who were charged with her protection. The orb to the corner of her desk glowed in shades of red instead of the usual shades of green. This signaled that she had a visitor. Amidst the glimmering shades of red a faint picture of one of her lieutenants moved slightly as he exchanged a few words with her guards. Eknara waved her hand across the globe and uttered a simple “let him in” to accept the lieutenant. Aicatul’s curiousity was piqued as he flew from the window to land on Eknara’s right on the desk. The doors opened for him, allowing him to walk in and offer Eknara a simple nod in greeting. “Commander,” he said. Eknara nodded in reply. “Take a seat, Aleksiol,” she said as she offered him a faint smile. He was a close of hers and the twins (Ethan and Malek). It inwardly stung her that he more often than not chose to treat her more formally because of her new position, but she accepted as a change that couldn’t be helped. Aleksiol dragged one of the seats from the table and positioned it to face Eknara before he sat down. “I have a few pieces of information, Commander, that I wish to relay to you. The first one deals with a newcomer whom many are not comfortable having amongst us.” “Oh?” She asked. Aleksiol’s features contorted into an expression filled with a hint of disgust and hatred. “He calls himself ‘Joe Catalano’. Since he’s shown up babies have gone missing in the areas he’s been spotted.” Eknara shot up in her chair. “What?!” Aleksiol stared straight into Eknara’s eyes with a very serious expression. “Mothers and fathers are worried about the well-being of their young and are forcing their children to stay indoors. I’ve heard rumours of him actually stealing babies since he’s been sighted, and I have talked to two families that have lost their young. A few have gone out to search for him in anger. One of these people went missing and was found the next day as if …” he stopped as his shoulders shook in anger while he looked away for a second as his expression once again returned to one of disgust. He turned back to eye Eknara. Eknara couldn’t believe what she was hearing, but Aleksiol’s information was always accurate. He was a good friend, so she knew him well and trusted him with her life. “He had been fed on. One of our own... The townspeople are furious and are demanding that he be dealt with.” Eknara’s blood was boiling. She took a second to calm her nerves before replying. “Do you know where he can be found?” “Not exactly,” Aleksiol replied. “But my people have an idea.” Eknara nodded. “I will round up a small squad and have him taken care of as soon as possible.” Eknara stood up from her desk. “If your next reports can wait, I’d like to hear of them tomorrow instead of today.” Aleksiol nodded. “They can wait.” |
