A low growl came from the forest, almost like a purr from the trees themselves; Hikaru eyed the forest around him cautiously, slowly activating his light-saber, its low hum mixing with the sounds around him as he switched it from hand to hand in time with the creature’s movements, a leaf rustle here, a glimpse elsewhere. He was being stalked, Hikaru knew this, something was looking for a blind spot and he was not about to let it have its way. Hikaru’s eyes focused as something flew through the air behind him; he ducked and watched as the creature disappeared into the growth on the other side of him. This was a losing battle, Hikaru thought, as he took off running. If Hikaru could just find a more suitable battleground, if he could make it there, this would be over quickly. Abruptly, Hikaru found a pine copse, instead of dense foliage pine needles and dirt littered the ground, this was suitable. There was a wide swath of open ground here, the pine trees had blotted out the sun, leaving the area underneath barren. Hikaru moved slowly now, carefully, the creature would have to reveal itself soon, there was nothing to hide in. Hikaru felt a sharp pain in his shoulder with the accompanying weight of a big cat; Hikaru managed to keep his footing and threw the cat off. The cat landed on its feet and slowly turned to face it’s now wounded prey, licking bits of Hikaru’s blood from its maw. It was a jaguar but, barely visible in the night air, the moon glinting off its translucent coat. Had Hikaru been a simpler man, he would have felt an unearthly fear but, he had been taught to view all things as they are. Spirit or animal, there was only way to defend himself, if he died fighting, so be it. Hikaru moved his free hand to the wound, close to an artery, too close. He had only been saved from a lethal blow by a few centimeters, maybe less. He tightened his focus; this was not a creature to be trifled with. The being, the Barrow-guide, Hikaru remembered was a creature commonly talked about in hushed tones to children of the Brotherhood, it was a creature merchants feared and now, it was staring Hikaru eyes to its glowing eyes. He could barely see it, but managed to follow its movements so it couldn’t get behind him once more, the creature was growing impatient it had tasted meat and it wanted its meal. The Barrow-guide jumped at Hikaru, from his weak and wounded side, quickly dodging his light-saber flashed through the night air but, it met no flesh nor did he have a new wound of his own but, his eyes widened as he searched for the large cat, he had lost sight of it, and in his wounded state that would spell death. Finally he spotted it; it was lying on the ground, a large rodent in its limbs flailing wildly as the Barrow-guide’s jaws clamped down on its throat slowly suffocating it. It had found less challenging prey. It stared into Hikaru’s eyes communicating it no longer had interest in him, but would not die for his retribution. Hikaru de-activated his light saber, not willing to kill the being in its vulnerable state, it had sated his hunger and killing it out of pride or fear was not honorable, to him, it wasn’t right.
