Building bridges; (ORDER, BROTHERHOOD)

Tael, surveyed the work in updating and repairing the bridge that was underway, it would retain it's old stone surface but be converted into a drawbridge to accommodate sailing vessels traveling underneath. The work was carried out by Order for the most part, cyborgs and many powered suits lifting and shaping the stone and designing the machinery. By order's standards, it should have been improved into a hard-light bridge but, since the brotherhood used live animals for transport a less visually unnerving option was needed.

The actual project had been assigned to Andrea Dartmoor, a strict businesslike woman with a head for details. She ran a tight ship, making sure the build progressed quickly and uniformly. It held some sway that what cyberization she had was surgical and not visible to the outside, which made her easier to relate to for Brotherhood personnel.

However, Tael was not present to look over her progress this day, he was here to meet with the Brotherhood representative of more pressing military concerns.

Saigo walked among the Order's workers, tailed by small group of men in khaki. His white uniform was luminescent in the mid-day sun. Visible on the sleeves of the men was a very vivid Imperial Chrysanthemum, and pistols holstered at their waist. The cultivation of Saigo's faction went well. Though their faces were a mix of races, their demeanor was undoubtedly trained in Japanese etiquette.

At times, he would point his sheathed dirk at a place here or there, inquiring about the methods of construction. The workers would explain quickly with an inquisitive look, as if there was no way Saigo would understand. But Saigo was patient, and devoted to the cause of Rangaku; western study. As the men explained, he would instruct one of his men to copy down words and diagrams in a notebook. Then, just as quickly, he would move on.

It was a productive day, full of learning and Saigo was pleased. He looked forward to taking a hunt in the forests perhaps later, when the sun was lower. One of his man called to him - a few butchered words in Japanese - and he looked up. His intermediary had arrived.

Saigo walked forward with a confident stride, his men flanked around him. He extended his hand to greet the new representative.

"I am Captain Saigo of the Navy of the Greater Japanese Empire, here on behalf of the Brotherhood. I spoke earlier with your associate, a Miss.. Hirderfrons Whetstone? And you are?"

A slight smirk of amusement formed at Andrea's lips was the only sign of amusement that she showed at another officer being called by a female pronoun, that and not making the effort to correct the Brotherhood official.

"Andrea Dartmoor." She said giving a quick salute to Saigo. "Secretary of operations and support, i believe you are looking for Avaria, he is waiting at the end of the bridge, there is a structure prepared for your visit." she said quickly turning on her heel to direct Saigo to a slightly larger structure than he had used when the previous negotiations had taken place.

Her stare was cold and disciplined, she noticed his hand but the familiarity of the greeting was not appropriate in the military setting and she ignored it. "CO Avaria just entered not too long ago, i believe he is waiting for you inside."

Saigo nodded to the woman, and entered the structure, still accompanied by his men. Since he'd entered the Order, all he had seen of officers had been women. This novelty made him curious; perhaps their techonology was incredible, but their militant spirit was woefully underdeveloped. Then again, the reach of the Emperor had not yet honored these lands. Not yet, anyway.

"Commander Avaria. It is a pleasure to finally meet you."

Tael quickly placed the child that he had been giving a ride on his armor onto the ground, it was a small girl, her clothes seemed to suggest she was of brotherhood origin and was a bit of an urchin. The child started to protest but Tael quickly handed her a candy bar and following a giggle, she was scooted out the door.

The room itself had a high domed ceiling, with a simple round metal and polymer table which seemed to house a great deal of electronics. The room was well lit, giving a cold sanitary feel to the place similar to war rooms of old. Tael stepped out of his armor leaving it to the side of the room as he stepped up to greet the Brotherhood envoy.

"Tael Avaria, I take it you are Saigo then?" Tael said taking a seat and starting to put a holographic projection. "We may have a problem."

Saigo sat down across from Tael and leaned back in his chair.

"I assume this involves the saboteurs. Please, continue."

Tael gave the Japanese officer an odd glance before he continued.

"Only the common ones." Tael said bringing up a holographic map display of Thracs. "Some time ago Order had a group of researchers who called themselves Diggers, they were assigned to acquisitions, they were an admirable group but ill-suited for heavy combat."

The projection highlighted a specific location on the map with a blinking red dot and zoomed into the area showing detailed topography.

"The last communication we had with the Diggers, was before they explored this area, they had claimed to find a legend of their world called the mother lode at this site but shortly after entering we lost contact. It was suggested that they may have found an active portal on thracs and a recon team was sent to recover them, this team also disappeared."

Tael yawned slightly, he hated giving someone a history lesson, he'd rather simply go to the site and report back with first hand accounts, which was what he planned to do.

"We have yet to send another team to their deaths, even on the small chance that there is a portal there. However, we have been getting long range readings from the site that suggest that energy is building there. The engineers think that this energy controls the very fabric of reality in Thracs and may be the cause for the tattered fabric of space time." Tael rolled his eyes slightly. "They believe that this energy, is the core of Thracs and may hold the key to modifying the world in it's entirety."

The holograms powered down as Tael took a seat placing his elbows on the table and intertwining his finger in front of his mouth.

"I'm sure you understand that even a rumor of this cannot be overlooked, Ead unters would be the end of us all if they discovered such a power, and I shudder to think what the Khaotics would use it for. Both have been snooping around the site recently and, with our recent talks, we thought that you and your men would be of use in exploring and securing whatever we may find."

Saigo narrowed his eyes. This talk of reality, portals and space time was all very theoretical to him, and he dismissed it as superstition and un-enlightened nativism. It seemed like the Order was as traditional as he thought. The disappearence of personnel was something else entirely. The idea of a powerful hidden weapon drew his interest; however, it sounded very much like the scouting parties were ambushed and killed. He would need more leverage from this 'Avaria'.

"I believe this would be another great opportunity for the Brotherhood to join the Order in mutual cooperation for mutual benefit, over the western barbarians. Perhaps together, we can lead this scouting party, and solve the mystery of this.. motherrode."

"That is the thought, we believe the Brotherhood's perspective on whatever might be there would be useful." Tael said unwrapping a candy bar and taking a bite. Only hastily remembering to offer Saigo one as well. "I'm really not sure why the techs are so sure it's a portal down there but, I can't have a rumor going around that such a place might lead back home. Hundreds would flock to their slaughter."

"There is no time to waste. I will return to the Brotherhood at once, to inform my commander and prepare our forces."

Saigo stood, held Avaria's gaze, bowed at a 45 degree angle, then turned, and left the structure with his men in tow.
