Rock propped himself up against a tree, it had been a long night. After his battle with Rhinox he had crawled through the gloom, eventually find ing a raised piece of land a bit dryer than his surroundings but it wasn't the miseries of the swamp that had stretched the hours of darkness for Rock, it was the incessant muttering from inside his head, Rock considered the possibility he had gone insane, maybe ingested some unknown gas or hit his head too hard when he fell to the withered monk and acquired a demon sword. The possibility bothered Rock considerably, if he were ever able to go home how could he discern reality from whatever twisted fantasy his mind dreamed up? Or, far more frightening, what if he really was home and all this time he was in a fit a fevered madness, what if the monsters he faced were only lamp posts and parked cars, and he simply assailing them with a baseball bat, what if the people he had killed were innocents plagued by Rock, the serial killer, or worse, what if he had killed his beloved.

His sword didn't help matters; Eisenschwert payed on Rock's emotions drawing similarities between those he had fought in Thracs to those he knew in real life. Threadbare similarities that is rational mind would refuse to even acknowledge, a similar shoe here, perhaps a similar hair style there. However, doubt crept in on those dismissals, what if they were true?

Rock's answer would not come any easier, as his mind saw yet another feat that should be impossible approaching, a man, walked on the water and muck as if it was not there.

"Surely" rock thought. "I really am insane."

But even in this state, Rock's observation skills would not allow him to accept a judgment of insanity. The being wasn't walking on water but, and patches of raised dirt that, seemingly, rose to meet his feet. "Oh, that's so much better. he's not walking on water, he's moving the earth at his will, yeah you're very sane." his sword mocked from within the confines of Rock's head.

"Yo!" The man said, he was a barbarian by rock's standards probably from the Brotherhood he reasoned, or with the magic steps maybe from Khaotics. He wore armor fashioned from the scales of some reptile and wore a friendly smile, one that made Rock shiver slightly...or was that the sword that shivered.

"oh great, more scar tissue." the sword grumbled

"I'm Enki, you look like you have a pretty strong will, wanna test it?" Enki said smiling.

Without a word from Rock his sword burst from his hand and Enki, taking this to be the acceptance of his challenge jumped forward. "Faaaaalcon PAAAAWNCH!" he yelled as he came down towards Rock who, at the advice of the sword, dodged instead of countered. It was good that he had, steam and earth exploded around them sending debis a hundred feet in every direction and obliterating the one dry spot for miles.

"kill him quick!" The sword urged as Rock charged forward in the soupy bog that he was becoming familiar with, however, it seemed less restrictive than before dryer, maybe it was low tide, Rock reasoned.

Enki dodged the thrust spinning around to Rock's side and delivering a blow to the side of his head. His vision blurred, Rock stumbled into the dust. "Dust?" Rock thought, even for a tidal shift, there was no way it could have dust, and certainly not this early in the day. Rock tried to shake off the dizziness only to roll by instinct as a thunderous stomp cracked the dry ground by his head.

Rock quickly rose to his feet as Enki watched, the man had just tried to kill him, the blow would have crushed his head this was not the time to worry about the ground's level of sponginess. However as Rock readied his blade at the man, he couldn't help but be thrown off by the beaming smile that Enki displayed, it was like a child who had just been given an ice cream, not only that was he was waiting for Rock to get his bearings, what kind of man was this?

"A blood knight." The sword whispered

"A what?" Rock answered aloud. "What is that?"

"Nothing just kill him quick or we'll regret it." The sword said as Enki charged, low to the ground. "Jump over him, it's a uppercut." The sword spat as their enemy neared Rock, the beleaguered soldier complied with the request and avoided the punch as it sailed into the air past him with a garbled shout of "BARE KNUCKLE!!!" Rocked rolled behind Enki and in a swift motion cut into his back at waist level.

Rock crouched, waiting for his opponent to react, to show some sign of pain at the obvious wound or, hopefully fall over. Instead he heard laughter as Enki turned to face Rock. "That really hurt!" He said his grin widening as he pounded his knuckles together. "Glad to see you can fight back."

----

A few hours later the two would be sitting a few yards from each other, bloodied, dirty and bruised with one of them wearing a stupid grin.

"Let's do this again soon." Enki said, rising to his feet unsteadily then slapping himself in face a face a few times, with restored vigor. "You're a good opponent."

Rock simply sat dumbfounded while his sword healed his injuries, he had cut the man, shot him and did everything else to kill him but, there he was enjoying the fight. He wasn't a masochist, rock knew that from the way the man moved while injured, he had fought masochists before; they moved into the pain not away from it.

"See you soon." Enki said cheerily as he walked off into the marsh, his road rising to meet his feet once more.

However, as he left, moisture steadily crept back into the raised platform on which they had been fighting, the swamp reclaiming it's territory once more and robbing Rock of dry ground to rest on.

"Shut up." Rock said to the sword preemptively, right now he really didn't want to hear it.
