Due to a recent interest in pirate novels spurred on by my travels, I'll be shepherding this journey through the high seas. This'll be my last attempt at this sort, considering my black luck in the past, but I'm hopeful it'll be a good one.

---

The year is 1679. You are a young and impressionable young man at age 20 living in Port Royal, Jamaica. King Charles is on the throne.

Port Royal is a large naval town, full of trade and merchants. Your father is a member of the Royal Navy of minor rank. He is currently off on a voyage as of now, protecting Britain's Empire - and has been missing for years, without news.

Your mother owns a local tavern, "Drunkard's Fate", that is rather popular because of the good service and food. Your family isn't the richest, but you've been working for years fishing, but it barely lets you and your mom break even. Even your father's pay has stopped arriving.

You are walking around on the street near the docks, looking at all the huge merchant ships loading and unloading cargo. You can smell the bread being baked at the bakery near here, but you continue walking, as you have no money.

You decide you had best return to the tavern, as you told mother you would be gone only for a short stroll. You turn around and walk back to the tavern.

You see the "Drunkard's Fate" ahead, your mother's tavern, and enter. It is rather crowded, and the dimly lit eating area is packed of all sorts of people. Smoke from pipes fills the room. Merchants, Naval Officers, laborers, dockworkers, and others, of a less than savory nature...

You see your mother walking around and carrying food to various tables. Old Turpin is chatting up the people seated at the bar while polishing a glass and nodding his head.

You think about your life so far. You don't really posses any skills, other than cooking, hardly a man's profession...but surely you will be attending academy soon, you will learn all sorts of things then.

"Daniel!" you hear your mother shout.

You look and see her calling you over. You know better than not listen to your mother, so you go over to her.

"Yes mum?" you say.

"A retired captain of our Majesty's Royal Naval is coming here soon, recommended by one his men. I want you to go to the docks and escort him to the tavern here."

"Yes mum," you respond dutifully, and leave running off to the docks again. You spot a captain surrounded by Royal Marines, and step up to talk to him. You're stopped by a young Marine.

"Whoa, slow down there mate. Who are you?"

"Daniel Coulson. I'm here to take the captain to the tavern."

The captain bows and walks in silence with the group. On the way, you make small talk with the Marine.

"So, what does a kid in Port Royal dream to become someday?"

He's obviously curious about not only the morale of the civilians, but your fate especially. What do you say? (This will give you starting stats as well)

---

Become the richest merchant!
Become the most honored admiral!
Become the most blood-thirsty pirate in all the seven seas!
Become the most honorable marine in all the Empire!
Other

---

So, what do you dream on becoming? First suggestion or most popular one determines your beginning stats. Now, like all CYOAs, you do normal stuff until the action kicks off.

"The richest merchant!"

The marines smiles.

"The most honorable marine!"

The group catches on.

"And the sluttiest sea slut!"

They all have a laugh.

A blonde marine in the back chirps up, "Well boy, if you were the richest, I doubt you'd be the most honorable. And covered in girls, I doubt you'd be very rich! But honor is a poor man's venture, one that makes us all away from those women we call our wives."

A moment of silence is passed. Another marine raises his voice.

"To welcome the sea sluts!"

A roar of laughter and approval goes around. They are all very impressed with you. Soon, you arrive at the tavern. The marine takes a seat next to you at the bar, while the rest sit at tabels.

"My name's Corporal Michael, I'll buy ya a drink on me! What'll ye have?"

"Milk!" You answer casually.

"Milk? A pussy's drink? Ay, harlot! A milk for the boy! Cup or teat, your choice!" The marines all have a laugh at your expense.

You drink it down and feel slightly stronger. Not everyone gets enough calcium, and you are quite conscious.

The captain speaks to a local man with one eye. They seem to be deep in discussion. Your mom is also at the table, tending to them and discussing things. After a while, the captain stands up to leave, and the other two stand in respect.

"Well, I'm sorry Black Kat that I couldn't sway you to my cause. I'm sure your best years are behind you." He suddenly walks over to you! You panic and gulp your milk down; hoping he didn't see.

"Ah, the baby's drink. Pay no mind to these marines; had they drunk more milk than rum we wouldn't have lost as many men to disease and lost battles." Michael dutifully stands up, and replaces him at the table.

"Well boy, I have an offer for you. The boatswain's mate has fallen ill, and I have none else to replace him but Marines. Would you like to come with me? On the chance of a lifetime?" He smiles.

Well? Do you accept or not?

"Lemme ask my mum."

The captain grimaces and walks off. He doesn't seem pleased, but he is sitting down at the table again. Michael comes running up.

"One Turpin's Dare please!"

"That's a heavy drink you know! Don't go messing around with it!"

He pats you on the shoulder. "Oh, don't worry boy, I'm not crazy enough to drink it - but thanks for volunteering!"

He lifts the bottle to your mouth, as other marines come out of the woodwork to force it down your throat.

You pass out immediately.

----

Hours later, you're awake. And you're not on land.

"The boy's up!"

Corporal Michael is there before you. And for some reason the ground feels like it's moving. That must've been one heavy drink.

"Mornin'. I thought that drink would knock you out. Unfortunately, you've just been press ganged."

Press ganged? You've heard of sailors kidnapping civilians, forcing them to work in the Navy. Pirates and war have caused mass shortaging of personnel.

"Don't worry about it - I was pressganged as a boy too. It'll be good for ya! Don't worry, you won't be any wimpy boatswain's mate. You, my boy, are going to help the marines!" He points to himself.

"Now get us some rum from down bellow!

--

Well. You're on a ship. You could try to jump off, and swim home, but you're more likely to drown. Do you do what this man says, or try to find the captain?

Where is the rum?

"Where is the rum?" You groggily manage. Turpin's dare is still sloshing around you mouth, doing havoc on your senses.

"Well, since this is a dry ship, I'm afraid it's in the bilge. James will take you there."

"Follow me boy. And stay quiet."

---

You leave the sleeping quarters and find yourself still in the ship. It's taller than you thought. Used to small fishing trawlers, it takes a second for you to get your bearings - no thanks to that drink. You stumble with James from door to door, until you get to a small trap door that leads to the bilge. It's slightly wider than a barrel. You put your head in to see, and James tosses you in. Unfortunately, you are much smaller than a barrel.

Three of which you see floating in the flood water.

How many do you try for? One, two or three? If you try for just one, they might not be happy - all three, and you might drown.

Three. If they're too heavy, let a bit of liquor out of each before carrying.

Cleverly, you let out a little liquor from each barrel before lifting them out.

James does some quick rigging to aid you, and soon you're back next to him, three barrels next to you.

"Ah, it looks like they lost some rum on their travels. We'll bring these to James."

Together, you manage to take them all - James with one arm a barrel, and you dragging the last. You feel slightly stronger. [+1 Fists]

"Good job, boy. You're shaping up to be a sailor yet." He tosses you a money pounch. A whole sovereign! That's.. 20 shillings, 240 pence! You feel rich.

"Alright, let's get lots of sleep."

The candle is dampened.

---

Three weeks later..

---

Some time has passed on the ship, you've gotten stronger, learnt some skills, even helped with the deckhands some. The captain is particularly impressed; the marines told him you were a stowaway, so he sees this work as enthusiastic patriotism. Had to tried to leave, the marines would've shot you for desertion.

A sail can be seen in the distance. It's a spanish merchant vessel! Prime pickings for a Royal Navy's Man-Of-War. The marines come topside.

"Fire a warning shot, then close in to board." Captain Towns, as you've learnt his name, goes down below to his chambers.

The marine captain is in command. James and Michael are among them.

"Daniel, what are you doing? Get ready!"

---

How will you help?

Help fire the cannons (carrying ammunition, bringing water)
Work as a lookout (tell the captain what's happening)
Grab a sword and help the marines
Hide in the cargo bay like a girl
