Service Record: Though only recently constructed at the drydocks on Luna II, the Hippomedon is a legacy ship, bearing the name of two previous war vessels that served in the Earth Federation Space Forces. The original Hippomedon was a Salamis cruiser that fought at the Battle of Loum, having the distinction of eating a nuke fired by Char Aznable’s MS-06C. Its successor was a Magellan battleship, built at Jaburo, and launched into space as part of Operation Star One. After participating in several small skirmishes against Zeon escaping into orbit from Odessa, the Hippomedon went on to earn honors during the Battle of Solomon, before disappearing amidst the concentrated mega particle onslaught of Gihren’s Solar Ray Cannon at A Baoa Qu.
The present Hippomedon has been commissioned, along with a large number of other vessels, as reinforcement for the EFSF in this post-OYW environment. After its christening at Luna II, Hippomedon made a swift course for Konpei Island, where it has sat as part of the 4th Defense Group since late July. It awaits the naval review scheduled for October 28th.
Description: Three hundred thirty five meters long, the hulking proto-flagship Hippomedon is a standard Magellan II. The blue matte finish of its frame is littered with a bevy of large two-barrel mega particle cannons, capped at the front by a line of eight rocket launchers, and dotted from bow to stern with anti-MS laser turrets. A hallmark of the Magellan II class is its radio antenna, jutting out from behind the bridge at a forty-degree angle. Alongside these common features, the Hippomedon’s sole distinguishing mark is its crest – located towards the front of the vessel, mirrored on starboard and port sides. The decal is an ancient Greek shield emblazoned with the fire-breathing Typhon, ringed by a halo of snakes.
The Hippomedon can carry two groups of four Ball mobile pods in its hull, and sports quarters for three squadrons of standard infantry, in addition to facilities for the ship’s seventy-three crewmen. Its hallways are clean and unadorned, and smell of recently dried paint. At the base of the bridge’s captain’s chair is a plaque engraved with the Hippomedon’s date and location of commission, name of its captain, and a passage from Aeschylus’s Seven Against Thebes. The passage denotes an introduction of the Spartan warrior Hippomedon, from whom the line of ships gets its name.
Name: Quentin Carmichael
Division: Earth Federation Space Forces
Rank: Sublieutenant
Assignment: EFSF Hippomedon, Captain
Appearance:-----Gender: Male
-----Age: 68
-----Hair: Graying Brown, Frayed, Greased
-----Skin: White
-----Eyes: Blue
-----Height: 6’ 2”
-----Weight: 160 lbs
-----Blood Type: O
History: Quentin Carmichael was a child of the early Universal Century, but despite being born to exciting times, never found much entertainment in the rapid advances of the day. He did, however, enjoy their rewards. Carmichael’s parents died in his early-twenties, and he was the sole inheritor of a titanium mining empire that stretched across much of South Africa. He made a fortune selling the land rights, and retired to a life of excess: boozing, womanizing, rocking and rolling.
Into his 60’s when the One Year War broke out, Quentin would have been happy to ignore the “colonial tantrum,” if not for the fact that his fortunes were running slightly anemic thanks to four decades of unadulterated vice. Levying what influence remained in his last name, he managed to score a commission in the Federal Forces. Sublieutenant Carmichael served at Jaburo for most of the war. Only with the onset of Operation Star One did he see action, and then, as captain of a Colombus-class transport that spent both Solomon and A Baoa Qu well behind friendly lines.
With the cessation of conflict, Quentin transferred to Luna II and played an integral role in designing the new generation of Federation ships. He became quick friends with a number of high ranking officials, and was known for his constant presence in the officer’s lounge, as well as his tri-weekly card games. When he was given command of a Magellan II and told to escort it to Konpei Island, he didn’t think much of the mission…
Personality: Sublieutenant Carmichael carries out his duties with a droopy, bored expression – only lightening up when an entertaining diversion comes to mind. He speaks in dower, British tones, which are often slurred by a varying cocktail of potent spirits ever-present in his system. His appearance is disheveled. Gray hair is always slicked back with natural greases, and its frayed ends stick out like pine needles from beneath a white fedora. Eschewing the regulation Federation uniform, Quentin prefers the relaxing fit of a blue sports jacket, slacks, and a red scarf wrapped loosely around his neck. Sunglasses are sported when he’s “outside” – anywhere absent the Hippomedon.
Quentin doesn’t really care to “command” his veteran crew. Recognizing the lax situation they find themselves in on Konpei Island, he reacts at most with disinterest – and more often, bemusement – to their various eccentricities. Indeed, he’s been known to join in on the fun from time to time, though is cautious about getting too close, lest he somehow manage to further violate the stature of his command.
Regarding recent events, Carmichael doesn’t believe in the rumors surrounding Operation Stardust. He gives little credence to reports of a Zeon hiding in Side 5, and outright rejects the story of GP-02A’s theft as extremist propaganda. Quentin is content to remain on Konpei Island and enjoy the “noble distractions” his crew offers, while they await the coming naval review.

Name: Carl Sturridge
Division: Earth Federation Space Forces
Rank: Ensign
Assignment: EFSF Hippomedon, First Officer
Appearance:-----Gender: Male
-----Age: 22
-----Hair: Brown, Shaggy
-----Skin: White
-----Eyes: Blue
-----Height: 5’ 9”
-----Weight: 150 lbs
-----Blood Type: A
Profile: Carl Sturridge came of military age just when the final shots were being fired at A Baoa Qu. He enrolled in the Federation academy at Belfast shortly after, and was known to be an agreeable if somewhat unremarkable candidate. Upon graduation, he was sent to space, and took up second-in-command of the Hippomedon shortly before it launched from Luna II.
Technically, Carl is the Hippomedon’s first officer. Realistically, his lack of experience compared to the remainder of its veteran personnel leaves him more as apprentice and intern to even the non-commissioned crew. David Frost, especially, has taken it as a personal goal to help escort the young Carl into manhood. Bright eyed and optimistic, he doesn’t contest this treatment at any turn. Indeed, when he isn’t performing as a glorified personal assistant to Quentin, he usually helps either David or Rhys in organizing their various “activities.”
Carl holds the official rank of ensign, but to his dismay, is often referred to as “head boy” by Quentin.

Name: Mike Rosko
Division: Earth Federation Space Forces
Rank: Ensign
Assignment: EFSF Hippomedon, Communications Officer
Appearance:-----Gender: Male
-----Age: 42
-----Hair: Blonde, Unkempt
-----Skin: White
-----Eyes: Blue
-----Height: 5’ 9”
-----Weight: 240 lbs
-----Blood Type: O
Profile: The only soul to survive service aboard both previous Hippomedons (a feat he has never explained), Mike Rosko functions as the current ship’s communications officer. He is an outgoing sort; boisterous and friendly, with a cool attitude that is unaffected by his memories of the war. With permission (indeed, orders) from Quentin, he has transformed the Hippomedon’s lower deck COMM bay into something of a makeshift DJ booth. From there, he runs
Island Radio: a rock and roll station (with a bit of country thrown into the mix) that takes advantage of the Magellan II’s advanced radar pylon to broadcast throughout Konpei Island. “The Count,” as he is known to his adoring audience, rarely sleeps – relying on caffeine and nicotine to carry his jams into the morning hours and beyond.
In the presence of Rhys Kavanagh, Mike’s otherwise unaffected exterior tends to take a bitter turn. While neither will go into detail, there’s an animosity surrounding the events of their survival at A Baoa Qu that persists to this day.
Sidearm: Old Vinyl Record
Name: Rhys Kavanagh
Division: Earth Federation Space Forces
Rank: Chief Petty Officer
Assignment: EFSF Hippomedon, Flight Leader
Appearance:-----Gender: Male
-----Age: 38
-----Hair: Blonde, Feathered
-----Skin: White
-----Eyes: Hazel
-----Height: 6’ 1”
-----Weight: 175 lbs
-----Blood Type: O
Profile: Rhys Kavanagh is a man of the people. Beloved by every crew member – save one – he can do no wrong. Cocky, but with skill to back it up, he is the lone ace pilot aboard the Hippomedon. The fact that he managed to score this status in a Ball during the war only adds to his esteem. As leader of the 334th Lonely Hearts, he is responsible for the other pilots aboard the ship. Being somewhat bored by his current assignment, he deals with the monotony by organizing “activities” that usually get one or more of them thrown in Konpei Island’s brig.
Where Mike Rosko is concerned, Rhys never returns the barbs thrown at him, preferring to keep his distance from Rosko and retreating to “pilot country” when the other man gets especially heated.
Sidearm: Baretta M9
Name: The 334th Lonely Hearts
Division: Earth Federation Space Forces
Ranks: Seamen
Assignment: EFSF Hippomedon, Pilots
Profile: A ragtag crew of Ball pilots, not one of the subordinate members of the 344th Lonely Hearts has ever seen real action. They report for duty, they train, and they get into trouble with Rhys. That is their record of service thus far.
Sidearm: Baretta M9
Name: Mark Wisdom
Division: Earth Federation Space Forces
Rank: Chief Petty Officer
Assignment: EFSF Hippomedon, Mechanic
Appearance:-----Gender: Male
-----Age: 38
-----Hair: Brown, Long
-----Skin: White
-----Eyes: Green
-----Height: 6’ 0”
-----Weight: 180 lbs
-----Blood Type: AB
Profile: Little is known about Hippomedon’s laconic chief mechanic. Mark Wisdom is always around, but rarely noticed. The mobile pods get repaired after training exercises, the engines didn’t break down during the trip from Luna II, and despite never being fired the weapons controls show no dust. Nobody’s actually seen him do any work, but these facts cannot be disputed. A pot exists, up to one thousand credits, to the person who can get Mark to speak more than three words on any subject.
Sidearm: Wrench
Name: Troy Leery
Division: Earth Federation Space Forces
Rank: Petty Officer 1st Class
Assignment: EFSF Hippomedon, Security Officer
Appearance:-----Gender: Male
-----Age: 28
-----Hair: Blonde, Spiked
-----Skin: White
-----Eyes: Hazel
-----Height: 6’ 1”
-----Weight: 180 lbs
-----Blood Type: A
Profile: “A boil on my ass since the day he stepped onto this ship.” – Quentin Carmichael
Troy Leery spent the One Year War on missions that will never see public record. He did them with no zeal – just an obligation to duty, and knowledge that although heinous, his actions were making the world a better place. Sabotage, assassination, and terror were among the more delicate weapons he wielded.
Now in charge of the Hippomedon’s three infantry squads, Troy is the one straight-laced member of the ship’s senior personnel. This hasn’t exactly won him awards with the rest of the crew. Quentin, especially, regards him with a mixture of annoyance and disdain, rebutting any suggestions from Leery with a sneer. “Golden Boy,” as Carmichael puts it, weathers the treatment and just tries to be helpful where he’s allowed. If any amount of readiness can be seen in the Hippomedon’s infantry, it can be attributed to Troy.
Sidearm: Knife
Name: David Frost
Division: Earth Federation Space Forces
Rank: Petty Officer 1st Class
Assignment: EFSF Hippomedon, Gunnery Sergeant
Appearance:-----Gender: Male
-----Age: 40
-----Hair: Brown, Bowl Cut
-----Skin: White
-----Eyes: Blue
-----Height: 5’ 8”
-----Weight: 260 lbs
-----Blood Type: O
Profile: David Frost has managed to turn slacking into a lifestyle choice. He obtained high marks in basic training for his gunnery skills, but managed to skirt through the war without ever tagging an enemy. As he explains it, there’s just no space for killing in a heart designed for loving. Quentin is the only captain to accept that claim as legitimate, and Frost has found a home aboard the Hippomedon.
David loves the ladies. Strangely, he has a fairly stellar track record in that department – five court martial hearings for sexual harassment notwithstanding. Aboard the Hippomedon, he’ll chase anything with a pair of legs and a pair of breasts (though wouldn’t rule out compromising on the second number, up or down). In his “off hours,” David is close cohorts with Rhys, helping with his various games and schemes, and palling around with the Lonely Hearts. He also has taken young Carl under his wing, and will see him laid or dead by the naval review.
