The scene was all too familiar by now. She stood outside the shuttle docking area, watching and waving. A faceless shadow stood next to her, holding her hand and smiling. Outside, a Colony Corporation shuttle began to depart, carrying her parents and a third, smaller figure. The name "Alek" kept surfacing, but something told her that it was impossible to be him.
The arrow-shaped craft slowly began to pull away, and then suddenly jerked. An orange cloud appeared, sending the craft bucking wildly as it was shattered and enveloped by the expanding cloud of destruction.
And through the shock of seeing it, she heard the screaming...
Persephone shot upright in her bunk, screaming once again. Her throat felt scratchy and dry, this one must have been a bit worse than usual. Her room was nearly pitch black, only the light from her personal computer terminal provided illumination. She sat there, sweat dripping from the tip of her nose as she fought to regain control of her breathing and heartbeat.
After what seemed like hours, the Zeon newtype turned toward the bedside stand and flicked on a reading lamp. Even knowing the light was coming, Persephone flinched and glanced away as the sudden light stabbed into her eyes. After allowing time to adjust from blindingly bright to uncomfortably so, she reached back for the two items sitting atop the stand. Taking the self-sealing water bottle in one hand and pill container in the other, she slid backward on her bed until her back was propped against the wall. With a deft twist of her wrist, she popped the top off the pill container, and then set the water bottle between her legs. Upturning the container into her now free hand, she dropped two pills into her open palm and quickly threw them into her mouth. Reaching down, she retrieved the water bottle and washed the chalky tasting pills down.
Then, she just sat. The doctors had told her the medicine was to help her function properly, but it only made her feel oddly disconnected. The worst that happened when she stopped taking it was that she would start acting a little more randomly, but after the incident with that MP's pistol last month, it was determined she would be better off on the medication. She still hated it, but it wasn't something she could fight against right now.
After several long minutes of just staring at the sparsely decorated room, Persephone swung her legs over the side of her small bunk and set her bare feet on the floor. Grabbing a small pile of clothing from off the desk that she had set out before going to sleep, she shed her sleepwear and dressed in a pair of cotton gym shorts, a black sports bra, and faded grey T-shirt. Sitting back on her bunk, she pulled a pair of white athletic shoes from under the bed and slowly laced them up.
Having finished dressed, she stood and briefly stretched her arms above her head. She'd have to check in before she left her room, so she walked to the small intercom device to do so.
"This is Persephone, beginning morning excercises." she spoke dully, releasing the small red button after finishing.
"It's the middle of the night.." a grouchy man's voice replied, but Persephone was already walking out of the door. She'd be unable to fall back asleep, she knew. And so did they. Might as well get something productive done.
