The sortie was a total success. And we got away with only minimal of paint scratches. Did the Federation honestly believe they stand a chance against us? Even with their own mobile suits, they couldn't really stop a force of freedom from winning the correct path.
Independence from a decadent and corrupt society.
"Mark!" My eyes turned as the familiar call of Liz Marsden, the pilot of the Dodai in my command, caught my attention. "What the hell was that?" The look on her face was exasperation, probably at the strategy we had employed. "Could you cut it any closer? The Feddie nearly scratched the paint on my bird!" The smile on her face broke the expression, as she laughed a little.
I laughed with her, shrugging slightly as I unzipped the top of my normal suit. The hangar area, temporary as it was, was brimming with activity after the sortie. The Team under my command (37th Independent MS) was just finishing up the debrief. Liz had already spoken with the crews working on her Dodai, while Jackson Laurent, the Cannon pilot, was arguing with one of the technicians about recoil time.
The newest member of the team, though, was approaching Liz and I. Fresh out of the academy, not having graduated with the rest of us, was Lucas Monroe. It appeared that there was something between Liz and he, but I wasn't going to comment on it. None of my business, and as long as it didn't interfere with our operation as a group, then I didn't care.
"I still can't believe that we caught the GM off guard like that." The smile on his face from his first mission was apparent. His hands were even shaking, probably the nervous energy from the first live fire scenario he's been in.
"Well, it probably worked so well because of who we were working with. Corporal Paruta is one of the best cannoneers in the entire Terrestrial Force." Jackson unbuttoning the top of his uniform, letting the collar breathe in opposition to the weather of Beijing. "Not to mention we even had a member of the SS there as well. We're good, but come on, with overwhelming forces like that, that GM didn't even stand a chance!"
I just listened while they spoke, walking with them to the mess hall. Full debriefings would be in an hour, so we had some time to kill before then. "The fact of the matter is, we still caught the Feddie off guard. It's a marker of the atmosphere within the Federation as a whole."
When the military isn't prepared to deal with a force fighting for a right cause, then the entire government isn't. I might not agree with the Zabi's, but they're standing for what Zeon Zum Daikun had wanted. A truly noble cause, and one I'm willing to fight for.
"But we can't get complacent. And we can't just operate alone." I brushed a bit of the hair that had fallen in my face out of the way, listeing on down the hall. Sounds like the tech crews were busy again as the hiss of a mobile suit powering down was heard.
"Let's wait for Corporal Paruta. At least, that way, we can socialize a bit with our comrade. No need to be strangers, after all."
