Day Two
It had been two days since Hirsch had last slept and he was not showing any signs that he was planning on doing so any time soon. There was too much anxiety about his next field deployment in a damaged mobile suit for rest. In the hull of the Himalaya-class Arianrhod, engineers were at work throughout most hours of the day in order to ensure the fleet's battered forces were functioning. Two days of sieging had rendered all the mobile suits just barely adequate for combat duties. Although Hirsch's Aqua GM was not one of the worst off, the armor plating and thrusters needed to be replaced immediately if he wanted a fighting chance. He was convinced that this would be his underwater coffin.
"Don't worry, Scuba Steve. Your suit will at least be operational by the end of today," yelled one mechanic from the GM's shoulder.
Hirsch gave the mechanic the look of death for the next few moments. While usually he simply dealt life's blows, lack of sleep caused him to easily lose his nerves with others.
Although he was known for his patience and proper decorum, it no longer suited him in this state, "Don't you fucking idiots realize that testing the water resistance is crucial right now?"
A female technician stood up from her post and confronted him, "Are you drunk, Munchek?"
"No, I'm pissed off that a bunch of grease monkeys are about to send me to my grave because they don't know jack shit about underwater engineering."
No one had ever seen Hirsch so testy.
"Got something to prove, private? We know what we are doing, but if you have a problem you better just strap-in and do that shit yourself. C'mon boys, Munchek, just gave us the day off."
---
A huge wave slammed against the Arianrhod as the Aqua GM jumped from the deck into the deep sea below. The computer was busy calculatting the mobile suit's reaction to depth pressures after every fifty feet. Instead of paying attention to results, Hirsch's mind had drifted into the blue space before him. Everything was so clear that he even noticed the small follicles of sea life as they moved with the underwater current. It was like a hypnotic ballet of plankton that shimmered with the flash of the GM's light.
I am by myself. This feels good.
He was in his own secure world. Not another human life in sight, but him. Suddenly, he closed his eyes.
This feels very good.
His intercom blasted a minute later with the voice of the hangar operator, "Munchek, get your ass back up here. We need to load the GM with torpedos...You're going back out tonight."
Hirsch let out a big sigh, "Oi gavult, not again. Fuck!"
