At the age of nine Nigel Ferdinand never really understood why his parents slept in different rooms, or why his brother Robert never had story time with his father before going to sleep. Yet, it didn't seem to bother Nigel as much as he got more time to spend with his ever busy father.
"Can you tell me the story again about how you were able to make it from behind enemy lines alive?" said Nigel in an excited voice that was not quite ready to go to sleep.
The board smile from his father slipped for a moment as King Alexander had a short flashback, only to be revived by the touch of a small hand on his arm as he shivered for a moment. Even war heroes had their scars and even the young Nigel could see this.
"Maybe you can tell me some other time," said Nigel knowing that he had somehow upset his father.
"Yes, some other time," said Alexander in his deep voice with a broad smile returning to his face.
"You should be off to bed, your mother wouldn't be happy about me keeping you up late," continued the King who glanced also towards the pile of paperwork that lived in his bed with him.
"Oh, please, one more story!" begged Nigel as he slid off the end of the King's bed.
"I will give you an extra one tomorrow night," said the King as he too slid off the bed giving his young son a hug.
"Ok... I guess..." said Nigel in a disappointed as he made his way towards the large wooden doors leading out from the bedroom.
"I love you son," said the King as Nigel slipped out the door. It was the last thing Nigel would ever hear from his father. It haunted him for years that he didn't respond in any way.
Making his way down the hallway Nigel was in a terribly good mood despite the fact that tomorrow he was to spend time with his tutor who he terribly disliked. As he made his way down the hallway his ears caught the sound of his father's door opening with its distinctive creak. It was a sound Nigel had heard almost his whole life, so he turned hoping that his father was going to bid him to return to the bedroom. To his disappointment Nigel saw only one of the friends of his mother's Randy Key entering the room. It wasn't uncommon for officials to visit his father this late in the evening so Nigel thought nothing of it as he sighed and made his way to his bedroom.
In the morning Nigel would awake to the news that his father had died last night, dying sometime in the evening from a heart attack. King Alexander was forty-one.

It was a typical mid autumn day and the leaves were falling from the few trees along the canals in the heart of Amsterdam. It was something that most children take for granted but the young Nigel Ferdinand so rarely got to do. He was able to be alone, just for these few moments as he strolled down the canal after having run away. The simple pleasure of relative silence was the only was he was able to grieve the death of his father and a small tear was finally able to roll down his face.
I wish I was normal, thought Nigel as he strolled past the old buildings which lined the canal.
His freedom was short lived however, as a Nigel spotted the ever present camera men in his life who had suddenly appeared on the other side of the canal. As they snapped photo after photo of the young boy who leaning over a railing looking at the water below in the canal, Nigel's tears slowly stopped. It was too late however, the photo would appear on the front page of the paper the following morning.
A moment later the security forces in charge of Nigel appeared suddenly, the sight of them brought a sigh to Nigel as he moved towards them. Approaching them in sadness he proceeded to walk off with them.
Leaning over towards one of the guards, Nigel spoke in a whisper, "Thanks for helping me slip away Felix."
The guard could only respond with a smile and a slight nod as they made their way back to Queen Margrethe who was waiting impatiently. Tapping her foot in disgust and anger she spoke, "I am terribly disappointed in you Nigel. How dare you run off at this moment?"
Nigel looked up with a frustrated look on his face and refused to respond.
"Just get in the car," stressed the Queen as she tried hard to keep a sad and concerned look on her face.
I can't believe she isn't sad about the death of dad. thought Nigel as he got into the Car next to his younger brother Robert who was sitting still in his suit.
"Move over Robert," said Nigel as he got into the car.
"I shouldn't have to, I didn't run away," responded Robert with a huffing sound.
Nigel proceed to shove his brother to the other side of the car as the Queen got into the car.
"Stop it you two," said the Queen as she shut the door of the car.
Suddenly her voice changing to one of soft comfort the Queen began to speak, "Alright now, remember what I told you all. We are going to follow the casket into the church with you two in the front. You are both to have the sad looks on your face that we practiced this morning, and if you can have a tear or too as well. There will be cameras and I want you to look your best."
"Yes mother," said Robert as he shifted in his seat slightly.
"Nigel?" said the Queen as she raised voice.
"Yes mother," said Nigel in a frustrated tone.

The royal hall had already begun to change since Queen Margarethe III was in charge. Suddenly everything seemed more tidy, but everyone was also not nearly as happy. Fourteen of the employees had already be fired, including Felix, Nigel's best friend and personal guard.
Its not fair, I didn't even get to say goodbye, thought Nigel as he met his new guard in his bedroom.
"I met your father once," said the guard who had introduced himself as Mr. Jones.
"I had too," said Nigel in a frustrated tone as he was still upset at the firing of Felix.
Mr. Jones sighed slightly and said, "Well at least you were the last to see your father alive. I didn't get the chance to say anything to mine before he died."
"I was?" said Nigel in astonishment. It all suddenly clicked and Nigel suddenly almost was in panic.
"I wasn't the last one in the room." said Nigel as he jumped to his feet and began to run out of the room.
With tears in his eyes, he ran as fast as he could to his mother's room. Bursting into her room, Nigel ran straight to the Queen who jumped at the sound of Nigel bursting into the room.
"Mom! Mom! I think someone murdered dad," yelled Nigel as he ran up and hugged his mother's leg.
"That's silly Nigel, no one murdered him. He just died in his sleep after you left." said the Queen in a soft voice trying to comfort her child.
"No he didn't I saw Mr. Key walk into the room right after I left." said Nigel sobbing still hugging his mothers leg. Her leg suddenly felt stiff and unforgiving however, as if something had changed.
"I didn't murder your father boy," said Randy Key who had been in another part of the Queen's quarters and had just walked into the room.
"Stop this nonsense Nigel," said his mother who stared at Nigel as he looked up with a totally different look on her face. It was something that he had never seen before in his mother, like a twinkle of evil.
Randy Key walked swiftly to the door shutting it before Nigel could escape.
Later that day, Mr. Jones was found to have died in a terrible car accident.

It was the first time in a very long time that Nigel was seen in around in the Royal Hall, as the royal family gathered for dinner in the royal hall. The Queen said he was very depressed but it was strange because no one was allowed to go into the boy's quarters, except the Queen herself and Randy Key. Everyone noticed something different about Nigel, he hardly spoke. He even did not have a birthday party, something that was a normally cheerful time around the hall.
"Would you like some more water?" asked one of the servants as she reached over Nigel to fill up his water glass. Someone being close to Nigel made him flinch as if the servant was going to hit Nigel.
Nigel then looked at his mother directly for a moment who stared directly at him.
"Thank you," said Nigel in a very shaky tone.

Though most had expect Nigel to grow up to be like his father, he was a shell of the boy before his father's death. Most thought the death of his father changed him somehow, it was even once written about in the tabloids. The birth of Anna changed Nigel's life however, who was born just a couple days before. Everyone even knew that Anna was Master Key's child, and the Queen was quite open about the fact that even she needed comfort from another man at a time, and it was generally accepted.
Nigel only had only one friend and that was Melissa Williams who was the daughter of the head butler at the royal hall. They both did not hang out as much with Robert and the various other kids who also lived at the Royal Hall. Today was no different as Melissa and Nigel played a board game in a quiet room together.
"Its your turn," said Melissa as she smiled at Nigel.
"I know, I am just taking my time." said Nigel as he looked at the board.
Suddenly Robert burst into the room with a couple of his other friends as they were playing soldier. Running around the room they began, to make quite a lot of noise.
Nigel couldn't take it anymore finally and walked up to Robert and asked him, "Can you please be quiet, we were here first."
Robert looked at Nigel with annoyance and then said, "Master Key said I don't have to listen to you since aren't really my brother."
"What are you talking about you retard?" said Nigel as he stared down his younger brother.
"Yeah, he said now I had a real sibling since Anna was born. He said you were only half my brother." said Robert as he pushed Nigel back.
A rage boiled up in Nigel and he punched Robert square in the face. Robert ran off crying shortly afterward.
Nigel and turned to Melissa giving her a, 'what have I done?' expression. Knowing what was about to happen Nigel said, "Melissa you better leave."
Melissa nodded and left the room the room with out saying a word.
Nigel was not seen by Melissa for almost a week, until he showed up with a cast on his arm. He had 'fallen down the stairs.'

It was a cold valentines day, but Melissa wanted to spend the night with her boyfriend and even though she had to climb in his window through the snow. As she slipped in the window a smile came across her face.
"Did anyone see you," questioned Nigel as he gave Melissa a hug.
Melissa rose her cold nose up to Nigel and gave him a long kiss before responding, "No I don't think anyone saw me."
"Great," said Nigel with a smile as he looked into Melissa's eyes.
Suddenly a knock came from the door, both of the young lovers had a look of panic on their face as Melissa dived into the closet and pulled a pile of clothes over her.
Nigel answered the door a moment later, opening it to reveal his mother.
"What do you want mother?" said Nigel acting as if nothing was out of the ordinary.
"I want that tramp out of your room now," stressed Queen Margarethe as she pushed the door open.
Melissa rose out of the closet and slipped out of the room quickly while the Queen gazed at her with ice cold eyes. Nigel didn't dare speak as his mother then pulled out a kitchen knife.
"If I ever see you with her again, I will kill her." said the Queen brandishing the knife.
She set the knife on the table and then proceeded to the door turning right before she left and said, "If you decided to kill yourself, don't make a mess, do it right the first time."
That whole night Nigel couldn't sleep he laid in bed weeping at the thought of killing himself, as he held the knife in his hand. Suddenly he dropped the knife in tears.
Melissa wouldn't want me to give into her, thought Nigel as he sobbed. He laid in bed till he cried himself to sleep.
In the morning Melissa was gone along with her father, who was fired.

Nigel burst into the hospital room out of breath, he was so excited to see his newborn son that he had just skipped a final exam for his college course. However, his excitement turned from utter joy to utter dread as he saw his vile mother holding her newborn grandchild.
"Nice of you to join us," said Queen Margarethe III as she looked at Nigel with a frown on his face.
"What the hell are you doing here?" said Nigel in a sudden anger raising up inside him.
Randy Key was standing in the corner next to Melissa who had a paniced look on her face.
"You didn't think I would keep tabs on you while in college, did you?" said the Queen as she rocked young Phillip in her arms.
"Get away from my child," demanded Nigel as he stepped closer to his mother.
Randy in the corner smiled and revealed a small needle he was holding next to Melissa as she laid in the hospital bed.
"Get away from her," demanded Nigel again as he looked at his lover.
"You are in no situation to make demands, you lost all opportunity for them once you started messing around with that tramp again," said his mother in a vile tone.
"You are lucky, I don't choke the life out of this child and kill her," said the Queen as she looked down at the now crying baby.
"You will listen and listen well son," continued the Queen as she moved closer to the Nigel's face.
"You will do everything I say from now on, or else the whore and the bastard both get it. You hear? Not a single fuck up," said the Queen as she shoved the crying child back into the terrified arms of Melissa on the bed.
"You monster that's your own blood," said Nigel as he stared at his mother with eyes full of hatred.
The Queen did not respond, but just continued as she raised her voice, "She will be moving into a wing on the royal hall where they both will live from now until I feel like killing them. You can see them once a month for an hour, under guard."
"If you so much as kiss the tramp or reveal that she or the child exists, I will snuff the life out of them both as quickly as I can blow out a candle," said the Queen who then blew over her hand as if blowing out a candle.
"You monster," said Nigel again still in shock his mother could even stoop this low.
"You will return to college right now, and in a month, you can see them again," said the Queen as she pointed towards the door.
Standing there for a moment Nigel was in total shock. He looked directly at Melissa who had a desperate look on her face. They stared into each other's eyes for a moment, but Melissa moved her mouth as she was 'I love you.'
