I've been thinking about this a lot the past couple days, and although I'm not sure if you guys will want to go in this direction I wanted to throw it out there anyway:
Basically, what I want to do (in short) is to finish repairs on Dragon, load it up with PCs and support units, and make a push into the Atlantic. With hard work and a little luck, we should be able to defeat any single Patrol group located there (http://planetzebes.net/oyw/places/atlanticocean.html), and possibly even all of them at once if we are well-supplied. The very next day, I would like to begin to construct a Fortress in the Atlantic Ocean, which will make that territory Contested immediately unless I'm mistaken. My reasoning for this is as follows:
1) A good chunk of the Earth Federation PCs are missing, destroyed, repairing, tapped on resources, or otherwise unavailable, and will remain so for the majority of the upcoming week. We have a good opportunity here to act unopposed (for now), and a chance to set the tone of the entire ground campaign for the indefinite future. I would like to see us take advantage of this as early and as aggressively as possible.
2) A base in the Atlantic would give us a beachhead from which we could begin to launch well-rounded, manageable incursions against naval convoys in the region. Additionally, it would allow our attacking forces a defensible and convenient place to fall back to if these campaigns are repulsed or stalled.
3) A base in the Atlantic would make the entire region Contested (as I noted before), which would provide a very easy and direct way for our personnel to travel between the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Since it's contested, there would be no patrols to worry about, which is a big plus if we need to be somewhere in a hurry.
4) A base in the Atlantic would pose a serious threat to the Federation, and I believe they would be obligated to face it with the lion's share of their strength. What I mean is, we wouldn't have to worry so much about our mines (in theory) because they would see both an opportunity to strike us while we're weak (yeah right) AND feel like they have to commit to stopping us (play heavy defense) in our tracks like we did with them at North Africa.
You might be saying to yourself: "But Gap, do we really want the entirety of their forces brought down on this lonesome Atlantic base?" My answer to you is ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY.
The way I see it, if they view us as enough of a threat that they are willing to contribute a ton of forces to stopping us, then we have a major advantage because we are dictating the terms of engagement. Having a fortress that they (wrongly) believe they can assault means we can field MUCH more aircraft than we can currently (anywhere from 20-40 Dopps minimum) which would solve our major problem in engagements to date - air superiority. As you guys might have noticed, our ships (for the most part) are incapable of fielding aircraft in as many numbers as their vessels can, and this base would more than solve that problem.
I realize there's a chance that, given sufficient force, they might try to siege and bleed us to death. However, I truly believe that if they actually tried to do that we would hold the advantage and they stand to lose far more than we do in such a venture.
There are, of course, other things to be gained from a Fortress - the inherent income from the installation as well as the income gained if we added a mine to it, for example. But mostly, I would like you guys to focus on the reasons I listed above: convenience of travel, rally point for naval assaults, and defensible location of escape.
I would love to hear your ideas on this. I've included a small write-up on the operation of establishing the base, which (while rough) should indicate more or less the kinds of finances, personnel, and time I think the mission needs to be successful:
Operation Trailblazer
Objectives
Personnel
Total Current RP - 2083 RP.
Total Current Income - 1025 RP.
Resources
Note - Obviously we can make some cuts to lower prices here.
Timeframe - Week 4 Assumed
Timeframe - Week 5 Assumed
I would LOVE to have some feedback on my latest pet project. ^.^
