The Zakus are adorable!
I like the map. I like both maps, really. Any kind of tactical map would be awesome.

I like Tylatz's icons. They look pretty high quality; professional, even. I'm not a fan of the overall map, though. Too big and doesn't perform well on my somewhat-dated machine.

They are just the shop icons given an outer glow to make them easier to recognize against the background. Give me some idea on scale, Kale. I'm too used to working in a large resolution. For reference, this is at 50% dimension and about a third the file size. It would require a bit of adjustment with the icons which I'll wait to do. img.photobucket.com/albums/v678/tylatz/tacticalmapsmall.jpg

Amazing what a little outer glow and some high-res can do =D.
As for the map itself, I don't know how much help I can be. Graphics design ain't my cup o' tea. I can say the 50% version definitely performs better for me, but like you pointed out, the icons would need to be scaled up a bit.
Personally, I think if we go the way of the map, it should be able to fit inside the site window, since it's supposed to be an easy reference solution. That may not be practical, though. It's just that, if I have to scroll or resize an image to get all the data off of it, it somewhat negates the "quick glance" benefits of this idea.

It's still a quick glance in comparison to going through the roster, base, ship, and fleet entries. I have another idea that might work, but 760px is a bit tight. Even the one Ket posted is over 1100px and mine at 50% is hovering just over 1000px. Give me a day or two to put together my new idea.

I tried to make it so mine would fullsize fit on your average computer screen. It is kinda hard though, there is a lot of relevant information.
The reason why I don't like Ty's map is I think using shop icons doesn't accurately represent the situation. I know there's a key, but when you see a Big Tray you will on some level assume it is a Big Tray, when it is in actuality a heavily damaged Medea.
The same for the fleets, there's no distinction between a fleet of 3 beat up Medeas, and an Odessa Task Force. That's why rather than fleet icons I just put down more player and ship icons.
The idea of this thing is not to get specific information, just to get a general idea of what percentage of an enemies forces are in given theatres, so that you know what areas to plan around.
I will not be doing this project though. I have too much other shit to do. If somebody else wants to do it and update it regularly, use whatever standards you want. Not really my place to make demands on something I'm not helping with =P
