Aurem had arrived at the rendezvous point early. Although the sun wasn't very high in the cloudless morning sky, it was still just as hot as the day before. He was sitting on the foot of his GM Sniper, waiting for Arieta to arrive. He imagined her coming to greet him, with her usual cheerful attitude, happy to see him, maybe still a little hurt about what he had said earlier. Aurem intended to apologize for not making it clear what he felt earlier, even if what he had said was technically true. He expected this to cheer her up and things to return to how they were.
Arieta's GM appeared. Within a few minutes she had disembarked and was heading over to greet him. Still as expected. Her face however, was not the usual cheerful and happy Arieta. She looked like she was all business today, and didn't even remotely care who it was with.
"Congratulations on your promotion," She said in a business-like tone that matched her face. "I hear it was well earned, shooting a Gaw that was already heavily damaged," She added sarcastically at the end.
Aurem was taken aback. Not how he expected this to start. Either she was a lot more upset with him than he thought, or she was really having a bad day. He decided he'd better apologize quickly if he was going to put her in a better mood.
"You're still angry about what I said the other day, about you starting this relationship, aren't you?"
Arieta's face darkened. It looked like she was struggling to maintain her business-like composure. Aurem couldn't see it, but it also looked like she'd been crying a lot lately too.
"I'm sorry," Aurem said quickly upon seeing her face darken. The question had been more of a lead-in and rhetorical question anyway. He'd intended to say more, but being so out of practice at conversations for so long left Aurem's mind blank.
Arieta had apparently expected more also. Instead of looking relieved, she looked like her composure was about to burst. She handed Aurem a folder, his orders, then turned to head back toward her GM.
Over her shoulder she said, "We should get to work. There isn't much time."
Aurem stretched out his hand as she walked away, reaching at nothing. "I..." He wanted her to return to her usual cheerful self. He wanted things to go back to the way they were. He wanted to tell her how he felt. But the words wouldn't come.
"I'm sorry..." He said again quietly after she had already left. He stood there looking miserable and confused until he finally remembered the orders in his hand. Silently, he made his way back to his cockpit and began to prepare for their next engagement.
Arieta sat curled in a ball in her cockpit with the hatch closed, quietly crying, unable to maintain her composure any longer.
The reunion hadn't gone exactly as she had hoped either.
