The cold, lonely dark. Night had settled over the small camp, and Suzaku was alone by a small propane heater in a tent. The wind was not terribly gusty, but he could hear it pushing against and moving around the tent. The only light was the warm glow of the heater fighting against the cold.
Letting out a yawn, Suzaku uncrossed his legs and laid down on his mat, slipping into the comfort of his inner-thoughts. After all, the past few days had been nothing but people and more people. Of all the challenges he faced and conquered, the human element always bested him.
Unexpectedly, a bundled-up figure pushed its way through the tent's opening and inside. Shaking some of the cold off, Allan Stirg sat down across from Suzaku, shivering.
"Mighty cold out tonight, Lieutenant. Too cold for me to sleep, so I figured I'd see what you were doing." The Private began rocking back and forth like an impatient child.
Suzaku slowly sat up, crossed his legs again, then sighed. "Aaron..."
"Allan, sir."
"Allan. I'm trying to sleep." Suzaku yawned loudly, then went back to laying down. "Head back to your tent and get some rest. We're going to need it."
"Something planned, sir?"
"Yeah. Good night, Private."
"Good night, Lieutenant." Allan stood up and saluted, all in one move. "Let's get 'em tomorrow, sir!" Allan left Suzaku to his thoughts as he slipped back into the Alaskan cold.
Suzaku started thinking of the various orders he had been given yesterday. Assorted and varied, one had stood out from the others. Normally, he enjoyed being given orders, as it gave him something to analyze. However, the puzzling nature behind this latest batch put a nagging itch in the back of his mind. What could possibly make him want to use that loadout?
Letting out a deep sigh, Suzaku focused his thoughts on the coming day. His first real mission in the field left him with one direct subordinate who was also untested. The odds were not stacked in any body's favor, it seemed, but to Suzaku, that just meant he had not calculated far enough.
"Sir, are you awake? Lieutenant Selffaw?"
Suzaku's eyes shot wide open as his hand reached under his pillow for his Beretta but quickly stopped when he saw who was in the tent.
"Yes. What is it?"
The aide saluted. "Another communication, sir. From the Lieutenant." The young girl handed the letter to Suzaku, saluted, then took her leave.
As Suzaku read the orders, his eyes seemed to lose some of the torpor they had. Interesting. Seems like we'll be busy. He jotted down a few notes onto a notepad and tore the page out.
Suzaku quickly got up and threw on his cold-climate gear. Stepping out of the tent, he passed the pacing Private who was waiting for him.
"Didn't I tell you to get some sleep, Stirg?"
The impatient soldier let out a quick laugh and replied, "Yes sir. But I couldn't help but be intrigued by the young lady that went into your tent, so..." The Private attempted to stifle some more laughter, but began failing miserably.
Suzaku was not as amused. "Private. We have new orders. Get your things ready, and tell the staff you want this loadout." Suzaku handed the Private a small list. Removing a small flashlight from his jacket pocket, Allan pointed it at the note and began to read it.
"Odd setup sir, but I'll take your word for it! Very well sir, I'll contact you when I'm ready!" With another quick salute, Allan trotted off towards the near transport. On its back, covered by a white camo tarp, was a Gundam ground-type. Suzaku's was on an identical transport next to Allan's.
Suzaku walked over to the chief mechanic, and spoke in his ear. The mechanic nodded, then began issuing orders over his short-distance radio.
Suddenly, the camp began swarming with action as the silently glowing tents began to empty people into the snow. Mechanics and engineers began rushing to different trailers, unloading various pieces of equipment.
Soon, we'll be ready, Gundam. We'll show them what we can do.
