A golden sunset shone over the jungles of South America onto the 87th Integrated Fleet. There were few clouds in the sky, a stark contrast to the terrible weather Aurem had been experiencing lately. Ordinarily he might have been enjoying the good weather, but ever since crossing the border into North America, he'd been doing nothing but trying to rectify his mistake.
Aurem left the current room he was searching and made his way back toward where his and Arieta's mobile suits were being stored.
Maybe I can finally find her there, she has to go there at some point I would think to prepare for the next sortie, Aurem thought.
Aurem's gloom from earlier had turned into a fever pitched fear that he might not be able to find Arieta, and worse might not be able to find the right words to truly convince her that he didn't mean to exclude her. He'd only been sleeping just enough to keep his mind sharp enough to think of places she could be hiding. It was starting to take its toll on his body though. Even now he could feel the sweat building on his brow as a fever started to build. Aurem ignored it and kept searching.
Crossing into the hangar he saw a couple of mechanics near his unit's shoulder painting what looked like two miniature Gaws. Aurem supposed it was a kill count of some sort. He didn't know who had ordered that done, but didn't really mind. Neither it, nor the mechanics were his concern right now. Still they called to him.
"Hey! If it ain't the Silent Gawhunter himself. Whadda ya think?" One of the mechanics motioned to his handiwork as he leaned out of the way.
Aurem merely nodded and gave the man a thumbs up. Pleased at receiving any kind of response from him at all, they smiled and returned back to their work.
One turned back briefly and called encouragingly over his shoulder, "Make sure you get another one soon! I want this thing full of 'em!"
Aurem was already walking away, having not seen Arieta in the hangar. It wasn't much of a search, and his mind was quickly dulling. It was also probably time for another 'nap' to resharpen his thinking. Food could wait.
At the door Aurem stopped. It hadn't occurred to him earlier to actually ask anyone if they had seen Arieta. Might as well start here. He turned back to the mechanics.
"Have either of you seen Arie- Private Marius?"
The two mechanics looked stunned. This was clearly more words at once than they had ever heard from Aurem. When they finally recovered and remembered the question they thought for a moment before answering.
"I don't think so. Sorry man. Give it to her good when you find her." The first mechanic said adding a wink at the end. The second mechanic nodded in agreement.
Aurem had no idea what they meant at the end, but thanked them for their help anyway.
Who else might know where she is? Aurem though to himself, preparing to search again with new ideas. He'd already forgotten the fever and fatigue gnawing away at him.
