2 Days from Earth, Zeon Expeditionary Force
Dren Fleet
Lucifer’s Fury, Tivvay-class
Elevator lift heading to hangar bay
Lights dance across her scarred face as the elevator descended into the depths of the Tivvay-class Lucifer’s Fury. Captain Aleksandra “Sasha” Beria held the computer printout in her hand.
“Captain Wu is dead?” asked Beria. Her towering first officer, Commander Dmityr Balaganov grunted.
“Da, Kaptain. Dren Fleet pulled body from broken ship,” confirmed Balaganov,” high command said he act as forward observer for artillery.”
“A shame, Dima, that the Wu family die so quickly.”
“Jinyuan is schoolboy with too much money. But Sun…” agreed Balaganov,” is fighter. Proper officer. His men on Side 3 mourn him.”
“As does his family.” Beria crumpled the paper in her hand and gave it back to Balagnov.
“Kaptain not happy to be in command?”
“Will being happy help?” sneered Beria as the elevator stopped. The doors open and they walked out into the long hangar bay of the Lucifer’s Fury. Mobile suits from the old Zaku II F to the newer Rick Dom fill the MS cages.
“Tell me about the pilots, Dima.”
“Aye, Kaptain. Pilots ready. Mechanics say steel boxes are in fighting condition-“
“They may be steel boxes commander, but show respect,” said a gruff voice,” these are FIGHTING machines.”
The first officer of the Lucifer’s Fury swiftly turned towards the rude voice. Captain Beria only turned her head slightly so that her good eye can see.
A man whose face shows the scars of multiple battles jumped off a storage crate and walked over to the two officers. He saluted just to be formal.
“Identify yourself!” boomed Balaganov. Squishing insubordination is rumored to be his favorite pastime. For that matter, the massive Russian does nothing to prove it otherwise.
“Lieutenant Peter Conolly, sir,” answered the veteran pilot,” I fought with this ship ever since the 1st Experimental Disco Fleet.”
“You have been with us for long time,” admitted Beria.
“Yes, madam captain.”
Her eye looked from side to side. “And your pilot comrades?”
“They fear failure more than death, comrade captain.” Despite the earlier challenge, Balaganov cannot help but approve of the pilot’s answer.
Captain Beria looked at Conolly then turned away to stare at the rest of the activity in the hangar bay.
The Zaku II F pilot took note of this. The other pilots of Zaku II HMTs, Rick Doms, and others gathered around him. Conolly eyed them, then to their surprise began to sang.
(To the tune of “Men of Harlech”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K0JTb5or6c )
Men of Zeon stop your dreaming
Can't you see their spear points gleaming
Conolly elbowed the pilot next to him as he went on.
See their warrior pennants streaming
To this battlefield
One by one the pilots chimed in, their voice carrying throughout the hangar. Balaganov looked around the enormous room as Captain Beria tilted her head a little.
Men of Zeon stand ye steady
It cannot be ever said ye
For the battle were not ready
Spacenoids never yield
Mechanics and crewmembers stopped in the middle of the duties and after a thought, began to sing as well.
From the hills rebounding
Let these war cries sounding
Summon all at Deikun's call
The mighty force surrounding
Captain Beria turned around and locked eyes with her first officer.
“Yes, Kaptain?”
“Sing, Dima,” she orders,” SING.”
Like a giant shaking the countryside, Balaganov began to sang as well. A few words in, Captain Beria’s voice carried in the sudden storm of voices.
Men of Zeon on to glory
This will ever be your story
Keep these burning words before ye
Spacenoids will not yield
Men of Zeon stop your dreaming
Can't you see their spear points gleaming
See their warrior pennants streaming
To this battlefield
Men of Zeon stand ye steady
It cannot be ever said ye
For the battle were not ready
Spacenoids never YIELD
On that last note, the entire hangar bay erupts into cheers. Balaganov gave a satisfied look at the camaraderie of the moment. Captain Beria walked up to the Zaku II F pilot.
“What is your name again, comrade?” she asked.
“Lieutenant Peter Conolly, comrade captain.”
“I will remember that name.”
